The Violet Crown

The charcoal beast, a young female forest hound with a lean frame, amber eyes, and a torn moss-green collar lifts its head from the ferns and steps away from the tower. Each paw leaves a fresh violet footprint among the ancient roots.

It moves toward the crescent pond, glancing back once. The guildmaster and her clerks remain behind at the northern gate; no companion has entered the forest with Dakkea.

Beyond the pond, tangled moss parts around a hidden ranger shrine. Three carved stones rise from the earth, each bearing the same crown with its center erased.

The stones brighten as Dakkea’s sketchbook nears them. Violet lines crawl across their faces, answering the familiar shape of his drawings.

A shallow image unfolds in the stone: roots descending beneath the forest, then a dark chamber opening as something stirs below. The charcoal beast waits beside the shrine, its lowered head pointing toward the revealed depths.

Dakkea follows the young forest hound beyond the shrine. Violet footprints lead between roots, each fading only after the next appears.

The hound slips beneath a curtain of moss, revealing stone steps descending into the earth. Cool air rises, carrying the scent of rain and old ink.

Dakkea descends into the revealed passage. The shrine’s violet light follows him down the walls, illuminating roots that twist like veins through ancient masonry.

At the stair’s end, the charcoal beast enters a dark chamber and waits beside its threshold. Its amber eyes reflect a circular floor marked with erased crowns.

Dakkea steps fully into the chamber. The darkness recedes from the floor, exposing a sunken stone table where violet lines gather around a blank space shaped like his magical pencil.
