The Gatekeeper steps into the torchpool, sword trembling in both hands, and plants himself between Marcus Corven and the scattered villagers. Behind him, the stair hollows breathe with low, shifting sounds from below.

Daren
Mercy, then. Give us the outer gate, and no one here will trouble your claim to the castle.
Marcus stands still in the broken light, his ancient blade lowered but ready. The humans ring the courtyard at a distance now, watching him like men at a firing line.

Daren
He can end this with one word. Or one swing.
From the dark stair opening, something answers with a dry scrape of stone on stone. The torch flames shiver, and the nearest villagers recoil together.

Daren
Hear that? Whatever is below, it is yours to command, but we are still alive. Let us pass, and I will keep them from screaming your name any further.
“Let the humans go”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -2)

Marcus lowers his blade a fraction and gives the order in silence. The Gatekeeper hesitates, then jerks his sword toward the outer arch and starts backing away from Marcus.

Daren
Go. All of you, out. Now.
The nearest men and women stumble into motion, grateful and frightened, filing toward the gate with glances locked on the stair opening like a mouth behind them.

Daren
I thought you would keep us here as shields. I was wrong.
He swallows hard, then lowers his sword point to the stones, the gesture costing him pride. A thin tremor runs through the courtyard as the buried hollow shifts below.

Daren
I am called Daren. If you stay in this castle, I will keep the gate and warn every soul left outside.
The villagers spill past him into the night, and one drops a torch in the rush, leaving a brief smoke-stain on the stones. The open gate yawns ahead, while the stair shadows breathe once more, waiting for Marcus's next choice.
“Except his offer”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Marcus lets the silence hold, and the courtyard answers with uneasy breathing. Daren keeps his sword lowered, but he does not retreat.

Daren
You heard me. I keep the gate, and I warn the folk outside. That is my oath now.
The nearest villagers slow at the threshold, watching him as if the words might fail him any second. They do not. They begin to leave in earnest.

Daren
They will run faster if they think the castle has a keeper. Let them believe that.
A low scrape rolls up from the stair opening like something shifting its jaw in the dark. Daren glances toward it, then back to Marcus, and steels himself.

Daren
I was not brave before you came back. I was only stubborn. There is a difference.
The last of the villagers slip through the outer gate, leaving torchsmoke, bootprints, and the smell of fear behind them. Daren lifts his chin toward the night beyond the walls, already turning toward his duty.

Daren
If you go below again, Marcus Corven, I will hold this line. If you stay, then tell me what banner I am meant to stand under.

Command the awakened Sindarians
“Command the sindarians to arm themselves and to begin rebuilding the castle”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Marcus’s command settles over the courtyard like a drawn veil. The dark at the stair mouth stirs, and pale shapes answer from below, not rushing, but gathering.
Up the stairs, armored figures begin to surface in ones and twos, bearing broken spears, rusted helms, and slabs of old stone as if each piece has a place in a larger pattern.

Daren
So they hear him too. Gods, they hear him.
Daren lowers his sword a fraction and steps back from the gate, making room without losing his guard.

Daren
Then let it be done. I hold the gate, and they take the walls.
Beyond him, the outer gate remains open, but no longer looks abandoned. The first Sindarians turn toward the shattered yard stones and begin hauling.
The stair opening breathes once, slow and hungry, while Marcus stands at its center of gravity, and Daren waits for the next command.

Command the awakened Sindarians
“Give orders to the other sindarians to hold the castle”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +2)
Marcus lifts his blade toward the yard, and the gathered Sindarians stop looking wild. They turn toward him instead, waiting.

Marcus Corven
Hold the castle. Guard the gate. Take the walls and do not let anything through.
The nearest Sindarians answer at once, beating spear hafts against stone. They fan out along the broken yard and toward the open gate.

Daren
You heard him. Move!
Daren plants himself beside the gate, sword up again, while the stair opening behind Marcus breathes darkly like a throat.
New defenders take the battlements in silence, stacking stone and watching the dark below. The castle starts to feel claimed.
