Black stone rises around Marcus Corven, his family castle looming ahead like a sealed tomb. The gates stand barred. The windows are shuttered with heavy timber. In the courtyard, a knot of terrified humans grips spears and farm tools, all of them watching the walls.
Marcus steps into the light. His blue eyes catch the torchglow.

Daren
Ghost! Sindarian ghost!
Panic breaks loose. One man backs into the well. Another raises a sword with a shaking hand. Boots scrape on stone as the group turns inward, half-facing Marcus and half-facing the dark perimeter.

Marcus Corven
They know the face, or what they think it means.
A gatekeeper, pale and wide-eyed, stumbles backward from the chain winch and points at Marcus as if naming a curse. The courtyard tightens, every weapon lifting at once.

Daren
Hold the line, it is here! Keep your eyes on the walls!
A spear wavers toward Marcus. Somewhere above, a shutter bangs once in the wind. The terrified humans brace for an attack that has not yet come, and the gatekeeper looks to Marcus, shaking, as if waiting to see whether he will advance or speak.

“Draw my sword and slaughter them all”
SUCCESS (Good Melee Combat, rolled +1)

Marcus’ sword clears the sheath in a single silver hiss, and the courtyard flinches with it.
The nearest spear jerks toward him. The gatekeeper scrambles back, mouth open in fresh terror.
Marcus moves first. The blade flashes once, and the front line breaks under the strike.
One human stumbles into another. Farm tools clatter across the stones as the circle collapses.

Daren
Wait, no, it is not him. Look at the mark. Look at his face!
The shout lands hard enough to check the panic. Heads turn, fear warping into confusion.
For one stunned breath, the humans see Marcus clearly, not as a ghost, but as the thing the castle has been waiting to name.
“Offer them all a chance to submit to me and serve me”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Persuasion, rolled +2)

Marcus lowers his blade, just enough for the light to leave its edge. The courtyard goes still around the sound of his breathing.

Marcus Corven
Submit, and serve me. Stand down, and you live.

Daren
Serve you... by all the saints, he means it. It is not a raider. It is one of them.

Terrified Human 1
His face... the mark in the old stone... no ghost would wear that look.

Terrified Human 2
If he is from the tomb, then what did we wake up down there?
The nearest spear dips. Fear does not vanish, but it changes shape, from battle panic to dreadful understanding.

Terrified Human 3
Tell us what waits inside the castle, or we are blind in the dark.

Reveal the true nature of the threat to the humans
“My soldiers”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

The Gatekeeper swallows hard and steps forward anyway, his fear visible in every line of him. The others hold back, waiting for him to speak for them.

Daren
Then hear me, my lord. We are not your enemies if the thing in there is the same horror that took our dead.
He looks past Marcus Corven, toward the black mouth of the castle, and his voice drops.

Daren
Something woke under the stones. Cold breath first, then a voice in the dark. We barred the lower door and prayed it stayed down.

Terrified Human 2
It was not a man. Not anything I knew. It moved like hunger with a shape.

Terrified Human 3
If you are of this castle, then tell us true. Is it still inside, or has it found the yard?
The Gatekeeper’s hand trembles as he points to the broken stair leading below, and the whole line waits on Marcus Corven’s answer.
“Call out to whatever is down there and inform it it's Master has returned”
FAILURE (Great Willpower, rolled -3)

Marcus Corven lifts his chin toward the broken stair and lets his voice carry into the dark below.

Marcus Corven
I return to my castle. Show yourself.
The courtyard holds its breath. No answering roar comes back, only the low scrape of stone from beneath the yard.
Marcus’ words seem to press against the old walls, then slip away unanswered, as if the thing below recoils from the claim.

Daren
He speaks to it like he knows what it is. Gods save us, if it knows him too.

Terrified Human 2
It heard you. I felt the floor answer.

Terrified Human 3
Then it is not trapped down there anymore. It is listening.
The men tighten around the stair opening, but none of them move to descend. The silence below becomes a challenge, and the next step belongs to Marcus Corven.
“Call out to it”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +2)

Marcus Corven answers the dark below in a single, measured call. His voice drops into the broken stairwell and comes back changed, as if the castle itself is listening.
A pause follows, then the scrape beneath the courtyard stops. The silence tightens, waiting.

Daren
Did it answer you?
Something unseen shifts under the stones. A cold draft breathes up through the stair opening, and the torch flames lean away from it.

Terrified Human 2
That was not the wind.

Terrified Human 3
Then say what woke here, if you know it. We need the truth.
The humans hold their ground in a loose ring around the opening, weapons lowered but ready to lift again at the first wrong sound. Below them, the dark remains still, as if listening for Marcus Corven's answer.
“Call out to it again telling it to come forth it's master is here”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Marcus Corven lets the silence stretch, then answers it with a name the courtyard cannot ignore.

Marcus Corven
Come forth. Your master is here.
The words strike the stairwell like a command laid on old iron. For one breath, nothing moves.
Then the dark beneath the steps opens wider, not as a door, but as a mouth unsealing itself.

Daren
Master...?
A shape rises from the black, not human, not quite shaped by stone either. The humans see enough to understand, and their ring breaks at once.
The Gatekeeper staggers back, the others flinching away from the stair as if the castle itself has named Marcus Corven its heir.
“Order it to wake the other hibernating sindarians”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Marcus Corven’s command settles into the stairwell, and the black throat below answers at once. The wet shine inside the opening ripples, then splits into several deeper hollows along the wall beyond.
From the courtyard edge, the terrified men freeze in a scattered arc, watching the dark like it might step up on its own.
A low sound rolls up from beneath the castle, not a growl, but many dry breaths stirring in sleep.

Daren
There are more of them.
Stone answers stone below, and the hidden chambers seem to open their lungs in sequence.
The shape in the stair dips back, as if making room for whatever wakes behind it. The humans stare, horrified, as the first of the other Sindarians begins to stir.
