Smoke thins over the torn turf. The scorched thing in the hole goes still, only a faint twitch at its shell. The knights keep their distance, breathing hard, weapons lowered but ready.
The Elder Knight studies the first dragon in silence, then eases his sword point toward the ground. His shoulders stay set, but the alarm in him fades to wary respect.

The Fighter-Butcher
Well. That was a tidy strike.

The Scarred Knight
No tunnel beast I have seen leaves marks like that. What are you, dragon?
The pasture quiets around them, wind combing the bent grass. The fresh mound smolders at the center, blackened and broken, while the knights wait rather than press forward.

The Elder Knight
If you mean us no harm, stand with us a moment. Breathe. Tell us what brought you to our field.

“You men are not all blessed, you croan for selfish reason and deficate the sweet hearted animals of the lands. I will not share my secrets with you, but that bug menace had to be repeled”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

the first dragon
You are not all blessed. You crave selfishly and trample the sweet things of the land. I will not share my secrets with you, but that bug menace had to be repelled.

The Elder Knight
A hard saying, and earned. We came because the field was stirring beneath the pasture, and shepherds would not ride into it alone.

The Fighter-Butcher
Selfish, perhaps. Still, you struck true, and the beast is done. That counts for more than pretty vows.

The Scarred Knight
The mound was fresh. The smoke came up wrong. I wanted the thing named before it vanished.

The Elder Knight
We mean no theft from you, dragon. Only the truth of what wakes under our feet.
The Elder Knight lowers his sword the last span and meets the dragon’s gaze without flinching. The Fighter-Butcher lets out a slow breath, and the Scarred Knight keeps watching the blackened hole, now quiet beneath the grass.

The Elder Knight
Stay with us a moment longer. If you will not give secrets, then give us your name for the tale, and we will give you ours.
