The Hooded Factor
The Hooded Factor

Wukong reaches the cellar bottom, sword up, as damp darkness swallows the stairs behind him. Rot, incense, and old salt cling to the air. Ahead, shapes shift around stacked crates.

A narrow lamp glows to one side, revealing a worktable, a ring of keys, and fresh drag marks in the dust. The rhythmic thump below the floorboards stops.

You took the long road down here.

A hooded figure steps from behind the crates, one hand near a ledger case, the other empty and ready. He blocks the path to the deeper cellar without fully showing his face.

Turn back, and I may still let you leave with your skin.

Wukong sees the cellar key on the table, close enough to seize, and the hidden trail opens deeper into the warehouse conspiracy.

✓ Quest Accepted

Get past the hooded factor

“I walk over to, and grab, the cellar keys. I say softly, but firmly "you do not want this fight. Leave now and your crimes might be forgiven. Stay, and you'll suffer more than you thought possible."”

You do not want this fight. Leave now and your crimes might be forgiven. Stay, and you'll suffer more than you thought possible.

Wukong advances softly and reaches for the keys. The Hooded Factor moves with him, hooking the ring away with a swift twist before Wukong can close his hand.

The Hooded Factor

Forgiveness is not yours to offer, devil-blood. And you mistake a warning for surrender.

The key ring skitters across the table and drops through a gap between two boards. The Hooded Factor retreats one pace, leaving the deeper cellar passage briefly exposed behind him.

You want the keys? Then come take them from the dark. But mind the marked stones. Only one path opens the lower vault.

A faint blue wax fleck shines beside the gap, stamped with a river-barge sigil. Beneath the floor, a concealed latch clicks, revealing where the keys fell and which stones bear fresh dust.

“I ask the hooded figure "who are you, and how are you affiliated with the river road house? Are you some kind of security guard?" Then I inquire about the marked stones, and why I should be careful about them.”

Who are you, and how are you affiliated with the river-road house? Are you some kind of security guard? And why should I fear the marked stones?

The Hooded Factor

The Hooded Factor

I am the Hooded Factor, Pell's appointed keeper of accounts and doors. I guarded this relay for the river-road house, though my orders came from those above Pell.

He taps two dusty stones with his boot. Faint blue lines glimmer beneath them, linking the marks like veins beneath skin.

The marked stones are ward-stones. Step on the wrong sequence, and the lower vault seals while the bell-crystal calls every watcher in the house.

As he explains, Wukong shifts his weight onto the safe edge of the floor. A splintered board catches his palm, drawing a thin line of blood and leaving his grip briefly numb.

The safe path is marked by fresh dust, not wax. Three stones inward, one to the left, then the black flagstone before the iron drain.

The hidden latch remains exposed beside the dropped keys, and the sequence is clear. The Factor watches Wukong carefully, suspicion sharpened by the questions.
