Eve of the Willow
Eve of the Willow

The survivors settle beneath the stone-hard weirwood branches. Those still standing brace the wounded against roots while Eve kneels among them, binding torn cloth and bruised limbs.

The water is nearly gone. Small sips only, and share it evenly. No one survives by pretending they are stronger than they are.

Eve passes the last clean water from a dented flask, saving only a mouthful for the weakest. Beyond the canopy, imperial horns fade into the forest's red silence.

The Wounded Rebel

The Wounded Rebel

We followed him because he got us clear. But where do we go now? The rebellion has lost Taoren, and the empire will hunt every road.

Eve finishes a bandage and moves into the hollow beside Effruin, keeping her voice low. Her tired gaze rests on the survivors before returning to him.

You protected them with the same ruthlessness that frightens them. They will follow you tonight, perhaps tomorrow. What will your protection cost them after that?

Effruin

Our paths divide here, Eve. Leave the hollow and the survivors to your care. I go alone.

Effruin rises from the roots and gathers his cloak against the red leaves. He gives the wounded no farewell, only turns toward a narrow break between the trees.

You choose the road that offers no witness, then. I will not pretend that makes it wise.

Eve stands, weary and ash-streaked, but does not reach for him. Around her, the survivors lower their eyes and tighten their makeshift bandages.

The Wounded Rebel

Will he return?

Eve of the Willow

Eve of the Willow

That is his choice. Ours is to live long enough that his choice matters.

Effruin passes beyond the hollow alone. The weirwood shadows close behind him, leaving Eve's quiet commands and the rebels' guarded breathing beneath the blood-red canopy.
