The tent flap hangs open to the outpost night, and heat-warped sand glitters beyond the canvas. Marad kneels where Zukalina drove him down, her scimitar tight at his throat. The map table has shifted under his brace, and the marked route trembles in the lamplight.

Captain Marad

Captain Marad

You are too late. The trap at the outpost is already set, and your march will break on it.

Then name every cut and every seal you touched, before your lie kills more of them.

He set this to force a failure, then meant to wear it like discipline.

A guard from the doorway calls out that the vanguard has reached the outer stones. Dust rises in a hard line outside, and the camp goes still around the tent.

Captain Marad

Captain Marad

If you strike me, you still must cross the kill ground I prepared.

Rusiki shifts one step forward, shame and resolve fighting across his face. Elara gathers the ledger to her chest, eyes fixed on the path list. All at once, every breath in the tent waits on Zukalina.

Zukalina cuts once. Marad’s words break off as steel flashes across his chest, and the captain folds sideways into the sand, his balance gone before he can finish his warning.

The scimitar stops clean, and the tent falls silent except for the rasp of the blade and the hiss of wind at the flap. Marad does not rise.

So be it. Then you face the ground I laid, and you do it without my lies.

Rusiki steps in at once, taking command of the moment. Elara lowers the ledger a fraction, and the forged mark on its page catches the lantern light like a bruise.

Bind him. After that, I ride with the vanguard, and I answer for the route myself.

The outer stones are holding for now, but they will not wait long.

Outside, the line of dust thins and settles around the outpost. Inside, the command tent no longer feels ruled by Marad’s hand, only by the hard, temporary order Zukalina forces into it.

Vanguard at the outer line, Captain. They are on us.

Then let Marad choke on his own lies. Bind him.

You heard her. Rope tight, hands fast. Elara, the ledger stays with us.

Already secured. His betrayal ends here.

Marad crumpled silent in the dust as the tent shook with distant steel and shouting.

Rusiki took command without hesitation, and the outpost found its spine again. The ledger was safe, the traitor bound, and Zukalina stood in the clearing smoke with the desert wind at her back. For this chapter, the trap was broken, and the army still had a path to hold.
