Heat shimmers over the dunes as the column moves in a long, measured line. Zukalina holds the vanguard, and the new western route begins to prove itself, narrow but workable. The oasis is still distant, but every step now points the army toward it.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Keep the spacing tight. No one strays from the line.

Rusiki rides near the front, scanning the horizon and the edges of the ranks with hard, wary eyes. The fear in his posture is plain, but he keeps his voice sharp enough for the soldiers to hear.

Elara

Elara

The water carts are still holding. Barely. If the pace shifts again, I need word before the ranks bunch.

The Quartermaster presses forward beside the carts, matching them to the infantry's rhythm with anxious precision. Behind them, fatigue ripples through the soldiers like a wave, and the first signs of strain test the order Zukalina won.

Zukalina

Zukalina

The march line is working, but only while everyone keeps to it.

Rusiki glances toward Zukalina, then back to the dunes, as if measuring whether her command will hold. The army keeps moving, but the rivalry between them now sits inside the march itself, shaping every call, every pause, every correction toward the oasis.

The western track narrows into a knife of firm sand, and that should be a blessing, but the wind turns mean. A gust peels over the dunes, hissing grit through the ranks and tugging at the carts. Somewhere behind the supply line, a whistle blasts, wrong and urgent.

Elara

Elara

Hold the carts! That sound came from the rear guard.

Before the answer can settle, a rider bursts out of the heat haze from the south flank, cloak laced with dust, one hand raised high. Not one of theirs. The horse is foam-flecked and trembling, and the rider leans low as if carrying a message too important to drop.

Unknown Rider

Unknown Rider

Command! The oasis road is watched. Someone has been shadowing your march since dawn, and they have banners of their own.

Rusiki stiffens in the saddle, already turning to see how much of that warning the army has heard. The column keeps moving, but the line tightens in the wrong places now, men craning, carts wavering, discipline starting to fray around the surprise.

Is the rider an enemy in disguise?

YES, BUT (Even, rolled 50)

The rider is indeed an enemy, but their disguise is not yet fully compromised. The deception holds for now, leaving the army unaware of the true threat in their midst.

I demand the rider how he knows this information

Zukalina reins in beside the rider and demands to know how he learned of the shadowers. Her voice cuts cleanly through the wind, and the nearby files slow as a few heads turn.

Unknown Rider

Unknown Rider

From the south dunes, commander. I saw their dust behind our tail line, then I counted their pauses. No trader rides like that.

Unknown Rider

Unknown Rider

He has to believe me, even if he hates my face.

The rider pulls back his scarf just enough to show grit-cracked lips, and a thin smear of blood on one knuckle where the concealment strap bit him. He gives the answer plainly, but his hand still guards the hidden blade.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Then speak fully. If you are warning us, do it like a soldier, not a spy.

The quartermaster rides up a pace behind, glancing from the rider to the sand-smeared map case at their saddle. The stained route cloth flaps once in the wind, weighted by a thumb and a line of tally marks.

Elara

Elara

If he is right, the western line still holds, but only if we keep the spacing tight. I can shave water from the next stop, if no one starts panicking.

Zukalina keeps her gaze on the rider while the column moves. She catches it, a second set of dust streaks, faint and low, keeping to the broken folds south of the march.

Zukalina

Zukalina

Two tracks. One warns, one follows.

Rusiki snaps a hand forward and the leading files tighten by instinct, horses angling closer as the wind grinds sand into their flanks. The line holds.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Keep your spacing. No one breaks rank for a shadow.

The Quartermaster studies the oil-stained map case, then lifts two fingers toward the rear guards, signaling a quieter pace and shorter water pulls at the next halt.

Elara

Elara

If we shorten the gaps now, they can ride without tearing the line apart.

The Unknown Rider glances once toward the south dunes, and his grip tightens before he faces forward again. He has seen whatever trails them, and he does not like it.

Unknown Rider

There, commander. Same dust, lower than the rest. They are using the hollows.

Zukalina cuts her hand low, and two riders peel out from the column with her. The march keeps moving, but the selected scouts angle south, away from the tight files and into the wind-scrubbed hollows.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Take only what you can keep quiet. If they run, do not let them scatter the line.

She leads the little party off the main track. Sand bites at their horses' legs, and the rear of the column shrinks behind them as the dunes swallow the safer path.

Zukalina

The lower trail stays hidden until the hollow bends.

At the bend, the shadows finally break cover. Three riders crouch in the depression ahead, their cloaks filmed with dust, their mounts already turning as if they have been caught in the act.

Elara

Elara

There. They are the same size as the trail.

Zukalina's scouts fan out before the strangers can slip deeper into the folds. One of her men yanks too hard on the reins, and the shout carries farther than she would like, but the escape route is cut.

I chase after the strangers on horseback.

Zukalina kicks her horse hard and breaks from the line, cutting straight into the hollow while the wind tears at her cloak. The scouts peel aside, leaving her the clear lane to the fleeing trio.

Sand flies under pounding hooves. The strangers try to angle deeper into the trough, but the slope narrows under them and their formation collapses.

Zukalina

Zukalina

Their trail, their riders, their pace, all match.

Zukalina closes the distance and comes up beside the rear rider just as the stranger glances back, startled by how fast she reaches them.

Unknown Rider

Unknown Rider

You are wasting time, commander. The ones who shadow you are not far behind us.

The rider's mount skids sideways. In the same motion, Zukalina sees the southern dust track resolve into a second, fresher line beyond the hollow, its source still moving.

Behind her, the scouts hold the gap open, while ahead the trio is finally forced to slow or be ridden down. The wind snaps over the dunes, carrying the whole column's attention toward the chase.

Does the unknown rider try to attack Zukalina?

Zukalina drives her horse in close and slams a shoulder into the rider's side. The impact tears him off balance, and his mount surges free as he spills into the sand.

He hits hard, blade skittering away from his hand. Zukalina lands over him in a controlled tumble, her scimitar still clear.

Unknown Rider

Unknown Rider

Get off me!

The rider thrashes, but his cloak rides up, showing the same desert dust on his boots and the fresh strain in his face. His mount bolts a few paces, then wheals in panic beyond them.

Zukalina

Zukalina

He is on the ground now.

Behind them, the scouts and the nearest soldiers reel toward the sudden crash, their line wavering under the shock. A few already reach for ropes and reins.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Bind him. Now. If he has friends, I want them facing steel before they reach the rear.

One of the scouts returns to say the enemy's forces are gathered in a massive desert outpost.

A scout skids into the hollow on a sweating horse, sand spraying from its hooves. He nearly falls before he can throw an arm out and point south.

A Scout

A Scout

Commander, there is a vast desert outpost ahead, and the force shadowing us is gathering there.

Rusiki straightens in the saddle, and the nearest soldiers stop fidgeting long enough to listen. The warning settles over the line like a held breath.

Zukalina

Zukalina

An outpost means supplies, cover, and a fixed place to strike.

The scout thrusts a hand toward the horizon, where a dark smear of walls and towers breaks the clean desert line. The oil-stained route map flutters in the wind beside the quartermaster's pack.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Then we do not wander blind. We tighten the march, and we decide whether that outpost becomes our enemy's shield or their grave.

A few soldiers exchange quick looks, then square their shoulders and pull the line back into order as the scout waits for Zukalina's word.
