The central barracks swelter under lamplight and weapon oil. Sandals scuff, buckles rattle, and a dozen soldiers fumble over packs that should already be sealed.

At the front, Rusiki paces the edge of a huge sand-table, stabbing a finger into the northern pass as if he can force the route to obey him.

He still does not look at Zukalina. Around him, the line is breaking into knots, men and women waiting for orders that never settle into shape.

A quartermaster in a soot-stained apron freezes with a strap in hand, then glances toward Zukalina as if hoping she will become the answer.

Rusiki

Rusiki

The pass is choked with wind and skirmishers. If we move now, we lose half the column.

His hand still jabs the map, but his shoulders are tense, the kind that come from caution or fear, not command.

Elara

Elara

Commander, the stores are ready, but the march line is a mess. Say the word, and we can still fix it.

✓ Quest Accepted

Assert control over the deployment

I tell Rusiki that we've lost too many in trying to take the pass, and that we must travel to the west near the oasis to bypass and reach the enemy forces.

Zukalina steps in beside the sand-table and cuts across the room’s noise with a measured command. She names the northern pass a trap for their column, then points them west, toward the oasis route and a cleaner approach to the enemy.

Rusiki

Rusiki

You want to swing the whole march west?

The map room goes still. Rusiki’s finger lifts from the pass, and the quartermaster leans in, already searching the crates for route markers and water counts.

Zukalina’s call settles the room, but it costs her in the same breath, the nearest lamp is jostled, and hot oil splashes over the edge of the table, blackening one corner of the map.

Elara

Then we need new ration tallies, and fast. If we march west, the water skins decide whether this works.

Rusiki

Rusiki

...Fine. The pass is out. We go west by the oasis, and I want the march line reshaped before dusk.

Orders start moving at once. Soldiers peel away from the broken knots and bend toward fresh lines, while Rusiki turns from the pass and marks the western route with a hard, final stroke.

Assert control over the deployment

Rusiki warns me to never doubt his battle tactics ever again.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -2)

The room keeps moving around them, but Rusiki does not. He plants the marker, then turns fully toward Zukalina, letting the noise of the barracks fall behind his shoulders.

Rusiki

Rusiki

You hear me clear. I am not asking for faith, I am asking for discipline. When I call the line, you do not second-guess it in front of the men again.

His warning lands hard and plain. One sergeant nearby checks his stride and keeps walking, while the quartermaster lowers their tally slate to listen.

Zukalina

Zukalina

He means it as chain of command, not insult.

Zukalina holds her ground at the table, and the silence around her reads as acceptance. Rusiki’s jaw loosens by a fraction, though his hand stays on the route mark.

Elara

Elara

Then we make the west column work. I will need the water counts from the rear stores, and I need them now.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Good. Take them. Zukalina, stay with me. If you are going to shape this march, do it with my lines, not over them.

Help reshape the march line

Rusiki and I go back and forth reworking the army lines

Rusiki draws the marker board closer and Zukalina leans in with him. Together they shift the line across the sand, trade two placements, then settle on a cleaner stagger that matches the west road and the water carts.

Rusiki

Rusiki

There. That spacing holds. Keep the front lean, or the rear will choke on the turn.

The Quartermaster snaps a tally slip flat against the table and starts marking the new order before anyone can argue it back.

Elara

Elara

Water shares adjust here, pack mules there. I can feed this column if the rear stores stop wandering.

Rusiki gives one curt nod, then taps the route with two fingers, accepting the reshaped march as command, not advice.

Rusiki

Rusiki

Good. Zukalina, your hand is on the line now. Stay with it until the sergeants copy it clean.

A blot of lamp oil catches on the edge of the map as the table shifts, smearing one corner of the western route and costing them a fresh sheet.
