The stair emerges into a low undercroft of old stone. Dust lies thick in the alcoves, and a neglected shrine crouches beneath clusters of cracked candles.
The footsteps have stopped. Only Edy's uneven breathing and the soft scrape of Powderpuff's hooves disturb the stale darkness as the living stair seals above.

Edy Cones
It is colder here. My palm stopped pointing, but the mark still hurts.
Above the shrine hangs a weathered hunter's emblem, its metal face furred with rust. Beneath it, an inscription has been carved deep into the stone.

Powderpuff
I can read it. It says: What sleeps beneath this altar must never be awakened.

Edy Cones
The footsteps stopped because we reached it. Whatever made them may be listening now.
Behind the shrine, a narrow seam divides the foundation stones. From within comes one faint knock, then the dry rattle of a candle flame that has no fire.

Understand the shrine's warning
“I take Edy's hands and use magic to heal her wounds.”
SUCCESS (Great Magic, rolled +0)

Dante takes Edy’s hands beneath the rusted hunter’s emblem. His magic passes through her palms in a steady warmth, gathering around the dark occult burn.
The blackened mark fades beneath his touch. The pain leaves Edy’s face, and the skin of her palm closes cleanly, without scar or discoloration.

Edy Cones
It stopped. Completely. I can feel my hand again.
Edy flexes her fingers, then turns her healed palm toward the altar. The cold remains, but the mark no longer points or pulses.

Powderpuff
Your magic freed her from that curse. That is wonderful, Dante. Now we can face the shrine without it hurting her.
Behind the shrine, the narrow seam answers with another dry knock. Dust slips from the foundation stones, while the cracked candles tremble in their sockets.

Edy Cones
Thank you. Whatever is behind that altar, I can stand beside you now.
“I search the undercroft for another exit”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled +0)

Dante searches the undercroft methodically, scanning the alcoves, shrine base, cracked floor, and foundation stones for drafts, hinges, or disturbed dust.

Dante the Demon Hunter
The cold air is strongest behind the western alcove.
He finds a narrow trail where dust has been brushed aside beneath a collapsed shelf. Behind it, an iron ring is set into the stone floor.
Dante pulls the ring. A concealed stone panel rises without resistance, revealing a descending passage lined with old white candles and a faint current of clean air.

Edy Cones
That is an exit. I can feel air moving through it, and it does not feel like the cold around the altar.

Powderpuff
You found another way out! Perhaps the shrine was meant to hide this passage from anyone who came looking.
Beyond the passage, distant rain taps against unseen stone. The undercroft now offers a clear route away, while the concealed panel remains open behind them.
“I lead everyone through the hidden exit”
FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled -2)

“I lead everyone through the hidden exit”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +2)

Dante enters the candle-lined passage first, testing each uneven step before guiding Edy and Powderpuff after him. Clean air strengthens as the undercroft recedes behind them.
The passage bends beneath old masonry and rises toward a warped wooden door. Rain murmurs beyond it, silvering the cracks with each distant flash of lightning.

Edy Cones
I can walk. Stay close, both of you. I do not want to lose sight of the way back.
Dante shoulders the door open, and cold rain-scented air pours over them. They emerge behind a forgotten stone chapel, where weeds bow beneath the storm.

Powderpuff
We are out! Dante found the hidden road, and all three of us crossed it safely.
Edy steps onto the wet ground and looks back. The door settles shut behind them, leaving only a blank wall beneath the chapel's cracked foundation.

Edy Cones
The cold is gone from my hand. Whatever was below, it cannot reach me here.
“I create a magic barrier to protect everyone from the rain.”
SUCCESS (Great Magic, rolled +3)
Dante raises one hand toward the storm. A clear boundary settles around the three companions, turning the falling rain aside before it can touch their clothes or skin.
The barrier curves over them like an invisible shelter. Rain hisses against its unseen surface, while lightning briefly outlines its smooth, trembling edge.

Edy Cones
It is dry. Completely dry. I have never seen magic hold back weather like that.

Powderpuff
You protected all of us at once! That is very useful, Dante, and also wonderfully dramatic.
As the rain bends away, muddy ground appears beneath the chapel eaves. Several old hoofprints and boot marks emerge, leading from the blank foundation toward a stand of blackened trees.

Edy Cones
Those tracks were hidden by the rain. They lead away from the chapel, but I cannot tell whether they are recent.
Beyond the trees, a lantern glows once and vanishes. The barrier remains steady, giving them a dry route across the grounds and revealing that someone may have left the chapel recently.

Get the girls safely to my loft
“I guide Edy and Powderpuff away from the chapel toward my loft.”
FAILURE (Fair Agility, rolled -4)
Dante guides Edy and Powderpuff along the hidden tracks, keeping the rain-shedding boundary around them as they leave the chapel behind. The blackened trees swallow the path.

Edy Cones
The road should slope toward the town, but it keeps turning uphill. I recognize that stone wall. We passed it already.
The wall appears again between the trees, slick with rain and marked by a pale hunter's emblem. Beyond it, the route divides into three identical muddy lanes.

Powderpuff
That is not ordinary wandering. The chapel may have hidden more than a door. Something is folding the road around us.
Dante leads them down the left lane. After several minutes, the trees thin, revealing the chapel's cracked foundation behind them instead of the distant streets.

Edy Cones
We cannot reach your loft this way. The rain, the trees, even the ground seem to return us here.
The protective boundary flickers once, and a new line of wet footprints forms ahead, pointing toward the chapel wall. The route to Dante's loft remains blocked.
“I guide Edy and Powderpuff away from the chapel toward my loft.”
