The Marionette

Three weeks after the judgment, Beetz leaves the cured village in the doctors’ and Mara’s care. The old road carries them beyond the last fields toward an abandoned manor sunk among black pines.

The manor’s doors swing open before Beetz touches them. Dust veils the entrance hall, where strings hang from the ceiling in loose, motionless clusters and pale daylight dies across warped floorboards.

At the far end sits a small, adult-presenting wooden marionette in a high-backed chair. Its painted feminine face is cracked at one cheek, its faded blue dress stiff with dust, and fine control strings disappear into the darkness above.

The Marionette

The Marionette

Beetz.

The name does not echo. It settles into the hall like a hand closing around a throat, while the marionette’s glass eyes turn upward toward the unseen strings, then return to the dark blue armor.

The Marionette

The Marionette

Or should I use the dead name the drowned bell released? It has been waiting here longer than you know.

The Marionette

The Marionette

Have you come to stay, Beetz, or have you come to be remembered?

Understand the Marionette's nature

“"Beetz is fine. Before we start this game of verbally dancing around what we want, I'm going to assume you're being controlled by some mystical magical bastard who's put a curse on this place. So cut to the chase and tell me what you want. Freedom? Autonomy? Death?"”

Beetz

Beetz is fine. Before we start verbally dancing around what we want, I’ll assume some mystical bastard controls you and cursed this place. Cut to the chase. Freedom, autonomy, or death?

The marionette’s painted smile splits along the old crack. Above it, the strings draw taut, but none of them move the chair or the dust.

The Marionette

The Marionette

You have named three doors, Beetz, and asked me to choose while another hand holds the key.

One string descends through the darkness and hooks beneath the marionette’s jaw. Its glass eyes jerk upward, then return with a different focus.

The Marionette

The Marionette

I want autonomy. I want the hand above me severed. But I cannot tell you whether that is my desire or the curse speaking through my mouth.

A narrow panel opens in the chair’s back, revealing a tarnished brass key stitched into red thread. The marionette cannot reach it, but its gaze fixes there.

The Marionette

The Marionette

There is your opening. The key loosens the first knot. Take it, and we may learn which of us has been asking for freedom.

“"Fine, fine." *I grab the key and use it to loosen the first not* "Who designs a key to loosen a string? The fool who thought of this clearly doesn't know what they are doing."”

Beetz

Fine, fine.

Beetz reaches into the chair’s open panel and closes their gauntlet around the tarnished brass key. They turn it against the red thread, forcing the first knot loose.

Beetz

Beetz

Who designs a key to loosen a string? The fool who thought of this clearly doesn’t know what they’re doing.

The key catches hard. Beetz’s gauntlet slips across splintered wood, scraping the armor at their wrist and leaving a fresh dent, but the red thread parts and the knot releases.

The string beneath the marionette’s jaw falls slack. Its painted head dips forward, then steadies, no longer pulled upward by the unseen hand.

The Marionette

The Marionette

I felt that. The pressure in my throat has loosened. It is not freedom, but the hand no longer speaks through me.

High above, another string trembles in the darkness. Dust sifts from the ceiling as the manor answers the opened knot with a long, wooden creak.

Beetz

I’ll assume the next key is up the stairs.

Beetz turns from the chair and heads toward the manor’s staircase, their dark blue armor moving heavily through the dust. The first steps groan beneath them.

The staircase climbs into a narrow gallery where pale daylight leaks through boarded windows. Loose strings hang between the banister and ceiling, stirring without wind.

The Marionette

The Marionette

That is where the second knot waits. I have never seen beyond the upper landing.

The marionette remains in the chair below, its loosened jaw lowered slightly. The brass key stays in Beetz’s gauntlet, its red thread trailing like a severed vein.

The Marionette

The Marionette

If you find another key, do not turn it until you know what it is tied to. The first knot freed my voice, but the house noticed.

Beetz reaches the upper landing. A closed door waits at the end beneath a cluster of motionless strings, and a faint metallic glint rests beyond its threshold.
