Cold night air knifes in as Buer, Alaric, and Kaelith spill from the drainage pipe into a maze of leaning shacks. Alaric steps into their path, pale and rigid, his hand out for the promised trinket.

Alaric Vane

Alaric Vane

Enough. The relic. You said you had it.

Buer answers by producing a small iron key, blackened with age and wrapped in red thread. It is no bauble. The shape is old, ceremonial, and wrong.

Kaelith

Kaelith

That is no prison token. I know that cut of iron.

Kaelith’s glow sharpens as she leans closer. The key bears a hidden sigil, a binding mark used for summonings, the kind that opens doors no living hand should touch.

Alaric Vane

Alaric Vane

What is that?

Buer’s prize is the anchor for a darker bargain, a thing meant to call something vast and hungry to heel. Alaric reaches for it anyway, because whatever he fears, his family still matters more.

Buer flicks the key into their palm and, with a neat little flourish, slides it away out of sight. The motion is smooth, but their wrist gives a sharp, ugly twinge from the earlier backlash.

Buer

Buer

This is my price for getting you free. Now, boss, what next?

Alaric Vane

Alaric Vane

You make theft look almost courteous. I hate that.

Kaelith

Kaelith

The courtesy is a costume. The relic is not. Alaric, if you keep it, something will come when called.

Alaric Vane

Alaric Vane

He looks from Buer to the hidden key, jaw tight, as if the answer has to be chosen from two bad doors.

He reaches into his cloak, fingers brushing the stolen signet, then stops. The shacks creak around them, but the night holds steady.

Then we go somewhere I can breathe, and you tell me what bargain I have actually made.

Buer gives Alaric a small, impatient tilt of the chin, clearly motioning him to take the lead. The alley answers with a soft creak from the leaning shacks, and Alaric catches the gesture at once.

Alaric Vane

Alaric Vane

Fine. Stay close, then. If you vanish on me, I will be furious later.

He turns and strides into the maze, and the path he chooses is not random, it bends toward a narrow lane with intact roofs and less mud. He has been here before, or somewhere like it.

Kaelith

Kaelith

He knows these wards better than he admits. That is useful.

Kaelith drifts after them, her gaze flicking once to the hidden bulk of the relic, then to Buer's wrist. The old backlash clearly amuses her less than it should.

Alaric Vane

That thing you took is not a trinket. It feels older than the prison, older than the people who built it.

Kaelith

Kaelith

It is a key for a door that should stay buried. A summoning key. If you learned nothing else from the prison, learn that.

Alaric slows just enough to look back at Buer, one hand half-raised as if he means to bargain and accuse at the same time. His expression settles into wary acceptance, because the shape of the danger is finally plain.
