The sled glides along the timberline, runners whispering over packed snow. Ahead, the pass opens a little, then tightens again between pine trunks and a steep white drop.
A large young wolf steps from the shadows and stops in plain view. He does not bare his teeth. He only watches, tall and still against the dark trees.

The Wolf
Easy. I mean no chase.

Joseph Lafayette
River, keep us steady. I see him.
Mack holds his line without flinching. TicTac stiffens, then settles. Harold’s ears tip forward, wary. Ally leans into the trace, trying to stay brave. Pine keeps his pace and watches the wolf from the corner of his eye.

The Wolf
Name’s Banks. I am only passing through, same as you.
Banks gives the team one more long look, then shifts aside at the edge of the snowbank, leaving the trail open but never taking his eyes off River.

“"I don't mean to be rude, but we're busy," she turns to the team "nevermind the wolf, look ahead and anticipate the next parts of the trail."”
SUCCESS (Fair Inspiration, rolled -1)

River’s words cut cleanly through the pass. The team’s attention snaps forward, away from the wolf, toward the next bend in the trail.

River
We’re busy. Look ahead and read the trail.
Banks holds still as the line surges past his watchful stare. The moment costs River a breath and a little speed, but the pack keeps formation.

Mack
Heard. Eyes front.

TicTac
Okay. Next turn. Next step.

Harold
Right. River’s got us.
Ahead, the snow-track splits around a half-buried drift, one side hard and narrow, the other sinking into crusted powder.

Joseph Lafayette
River, which way?
“River goes in the direction away from the wolf.”
SUCCESS (Great Survival, rolled +0)

River angles the team toward the harder line, the one that keeps them furthest from Banks. The sled answers at once, runners whispering over packed snow as the line shifts cleanly into the narrow track.
Banks stays where he is, watching from the drift, but the gap between wolf and team widens with every stride. Snow ticks from the cliff edge above, and the bend hides him behind stone and white.

Joseph Lafayette
That one. Good, River.

Mack
Keep it tight. Let the trail do the work.

Harold
She saw the safer line first.
The fork falls behind them. Ahead, the pass opens into a thinner, quieter stretch, and the team settles into the new path without breaking pace.
From behind the turn, Banks is gone from sight, and the wind carries only the hiss of snow over stone.
