The Climb Toward the Captives

The tunnel ends in a broken drop. Below, a jagged shaft swallows the faint sounds of the captives.

Austin's pale spirit light crawls over slick moss and damp stone, revealing narrow holds along the wall and a taut tripwire near the lip above.

The hooded elf braces behind him, blade angled low, eyes locked on the dark opening ahead.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

The wire is set for anyone who climbs straight up.

Austin shifts toward the safest handholds, beginning the climb while the elf keeps watch for movement from the shaft.

At the top, the trap lies between them and the captives, and the rescue path is clear.

You nearly lose your footing as the hooded elf drags you up by your collar. "Thanks. So, what's the plan?" You ask her in a quiet voice, dusting yourself off. "I'm not much of a close combat fighter, but I can do a lot from range."

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

The Climb Toward the Captives

The hooded elf hooks Austin by the collar and hauls him the last handspan onto the ledge. Loose grit skitters into the shaft below.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Thanks. So, what's the plan?

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

I'm not much good in close combat, but I can work from range.

Striker

Striker

Good. You stay behind me, strike only when I mark a target. My people are not fond of being seen, but we are very fond of surviving.

She glances toward the dark tunnel ahead, then back at Austin, weighing him with a quick, practical look.

Striker

Striker

If the trap is touched, we do not freeze. We move through the noise and reach the girls before the cave learns our shape.

Striker

Striker

Can you keep the light small and steady while we pass it?

You nod, covering it with your free hand, "Can do. Just a warning. These White Devil guys don't mess around. They are killers. Total monsters in human skin. If they capture us..." You shiver at the thought. "Anyway. If we can get to the girls I can tunnel us out of here, probably. My powers work off my stamina and mental strain, so as long as I don't exhaust myself we should be good... What should I call you, by the way?"

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

Austin keeps the pale spirit small in his palm, its glow washing the ledge in a cold bead of light. He nods once, then answers in a low voice that stays close to the stone. The hooded elf listens without interrupting.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Can do. Those White Devils are killers. If they catch us, we are done.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

If we reach the girls, I can help tunnel us out. It costs stamina and focus, but I can manage it.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

What should I call you?

Striker

Striker

Striker.

Striker

Striker

A name is earned, not gifted. Use that, and keep the light steady.

She shifts one step toward the tunnel mouth, blade angled low, and gives Austin a brief sidelong look that is almost approval. The tripwire gleams above them in the pale glow, thin as a thread, waiting for the wrong touch.

You both slip under the wire and tread carefully forward. A sound echoes off the walls, a faint sobbing, muffled and pained.

SUCCESS (Poor Stealth, rolled +0)

Austin eases flat to the stone and slides under the wire first, keeping the pale spirit pinched to a thin bead of light. Striker follows in his wake, boots silent, blade tucked close. They clear the trap.

Austin shifts forward another step, and the tunnel answers with a soft scrape of stone on stone. The sound rolls ahead of them, then dies in the dark.

A muffled sob reaches them from deeper in the passage, weak and pained, then another breath catches behind it.

Striker

Striker

They hear us. Keep the light low.

She lifts two fingers, then points the way forward, her shoulders tightening as she listens.

The pale glow trembles in Austin's palm. Its edge catches on the rough walls, and the tunnel beyond breaks into a narrow bend.

The two of you peer over a steep ledge; below you see a collection of cages filled with different species of elves. Dark elves, high elves, desert elves, and even a snow elf. There are about 20 of them. There are also 7 men and women in the iconic white devil uniforms of white capes and black masks with horns coming from the top.

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

Austin leans to the brink, and the shaft falls away into a hollow chamber below. Rows of cages fill the pit, packed tight with elves of many kinds, their pale faces and dark eyes catching in the dimness.

Seven White Devils stand among them, white capes ghosting in the dark, black horned masks turned upward toward the ledge.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Twenty captives, maybe more. Seven guards.

Striker

Striker

There. Keep still.

Striker settles beside him, peering over the drop with one hand braced to the stone. Her blade remains low, but her shoulders tighten as she takes in the cages.

Striker

Striker

They keep their prey mixed on purpose. It makes rescue harder, and panic easier.

Below, one masked slaver starts across the chamber with a lantern, and another turns toward the ledge.

Ask Striker for the plan, "What do you think we should do? I'll follow your lead," you say, keeping your voice low as you peer over the edge.

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

What do you think we should do? I will follow your lead.

Striker

Striker

Good. Listen first, move second. I cut the lantern bearer if he comes under this lip, you keep the light low and watch the cages.

Striker

Striker

My people are thought thieves and cowards below ground. Let them learn we are neither, tonight.

She shifts closer, shoulder nearly touching Austin's, and points with two fingers toward the nearest guard routes. The chamber below stays tense, but the trap line ahead lies quiet for the moment.

Striker

Striker

If the girls are near the east cages, we take them before the others know where to look. If not, we make the slavers look the wrong way.

Austin's pale light shrinks smaller in his palm as Striker eases forward into a low crouch, eyes fixed on the moving mask below.

You follow her lead, just before she moves out of reach, you tug at her cape, pulling her back as something catches your eye. "Sorry," you squeak out as she falls into her lap, her plump ass pressing against your groin. As she looks at you with murderous intent you point the the corner of the room. "Look, there's something else in that cage. My eyes aren't perfect but that's sure as hell not an elf."

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +3)

Austin catches a shape in the nearest cage, not elf, too broad through the shoulders and wrong in the face. He hooks Striker’s cloak and pulls her back just enough to stop her from stepping into the sliver of lantern light.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Sorry, look. There is something else in that cage. My eyes are not perfect, but that is not an elf.

Striker

Striker

Her eyes snap to the cage corner, and the murderous tension on her face shifts into hard focus.

Below, the lantern bearer drifts past the wrong cage. Inside, a bound figure moves once, then stops, as if listening.

Striker

Striker

Not an elf. Good catch. That is a hostage, or bait.

She gestures with two fingers, and Austin’s dim spirit-light catches something on the cage bars, a fresh smear of pale powder leading from the lock to the floor.

Striker

Striker

There. They rigged that cage. If we rush the girls, the whole row may answer.

The slavers’ lantern swings back toward the ledge, and the nearest trap line gives a tiny, ominous twitch.

You look carefully around the cavern, unsure how to approach the situation. "What should we do then? Is it just that cage that's trapped? Could there be more? Should we try to capture one member and try to leverage the rest? Maybe interrogate a straggler?" You watch her carefully skulk down the ridge, blades at the ready as a member of the devils rests their back against the wall closest to you. Striker skulks down the ridge, eyes focused. "Worry not," she whispers. "You just occupy yourself with freeing my kin. If they wish to play games," her blades rise, "then we just need to change the rules."

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled -1)

The Climb Toward the Captives

Austin scans the chamber, and the layout resolves at once, cages in tiers, powder on more than one latch, and a second trip line threading the approach under the ledge.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

What should we do then? Is it just that cage that's trapped? Could there be more?

Striker slides lower along the ridge, keeping her body between Austin and the lantern glow. Her gaze never leaves the slaver posted by the wall.

Striker

Striker

There are more. The powder marks the rigged cages. Keep your light thin, and free my kin.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Should we try to capture one member and use them against the rest? Interrogate a straggler?

Striker

Striker

If they wish to play games, we change the rules.

Austin’s small spirit-light catches a hidden thread near the ledge. The line tightens as the slaver shifts below, and the nearest cage lock gives a sharp, dry click.

You watch her spring into action, swiftly impaling the first slaver from behind, a sick gurgling leaves his throat as he slumps to the floor. You immediately get to work as she distracts everyone.

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -2)

The Climb Toward the Captives

Austin tightens his focus and threads the spirit-light through the lockwork. The powder-marked cages answer one after another, metal catches easing open with tiny clicks as the warding slips free.

But the pale glow flares against the bars, bright enough to skim the chamber below. Heads turn at once, and the slavers start shouting over each other.

Striker

Striker

Now.

Striker drops from the ridge in a blur, blades flashing in the lantern spill. The nearest slaver folds backward into the dark, and the others stagger to find the source.

Austin’s magic holds. The opened cages swing loose, and the elf girls inside recoil, then scramble toward the gap as the noise spreads through the chamber.

Striker

Striker

Move them. Before the rest recover.

A chained latch snaps under the strain, and one cage door bangs wide enough for the captives to spill into the passage, shaken but free. The chamber tips from covert rescue into a frantic break for the exit.

You wave your hand, beckoning the freed elves to your position. "Hurry follow me! We are getting everyone out of here!" A handful of the elves look confused, second guessing if they should trust a human after what they've been through. You need to convince them that you can be trusted and quickly, Striker cannot hold off all the slavers for long.

SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

The Climb Toward the Captives
Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Hurry, follow me. We are getting everyone out of here.

Austin keeps his hand lifted toward the passage, and the freed elves finally move. The first one ducks past him, then another, drawn by his steady gesture more than by certainty.

Elf Girls

Elf Girls

He is helping. Go, go with him!

The cluster of captives tightens around his side of the tunnel, confusion giving way to quick, frightened trust. Their bare feet scrape stone as they file toward the gap, glancing once at the fighting below, then back to Austin.

Striker

Striker

Good. Keep them moving.

Striker lands another hard step between the chamber and the ledge, forcing the nearest slaver to hesitate. Her voice stays flat, but it carries approval as she clears the line of escape for Austin and the girls.

Elf Girls

Elf Girls

A human... but he opens the cages and points the way out.

One girl reaches the passage first and helps tug the others along, and the whole group commits to the run. Behind them, Striker’s blades hold the chamber’s attention just long enough for the rescue to turn into escape.

You make your way to a thin wall, your hands searching for purchase where you think the outside is close. A frail-looking snow elf tugs your sleeve, "Mr. Human. Are you really here to help us?" She asks softly, carefully, almost as if she is fearing the truth. You press your hands against the wall and part the stone.

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -1)

The Climb Toward the Captives

Austin finds the thinnest seam in the stone and presses both palms flat. The wall answers with a low groan, then splits along hidden veins, dust sifting down into the tunnel.

Elf Girls

Elf Girls

It is opening...

The frail snow elf at his sleeve loosens her grip, staring at the widening crack as pale wind leaks through. Cold air spills in, sharp with forest damp and freedom.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

The outside is close.

Striker

Striker

Good. Push through before they notice.

Stone gives way in a ragged oval large enough for a crouched body. Beyond it, moonlit roots and black leaves wait outside the cave mouth.

Elf Girls

Elf Girls

He really did it...

Behind them, the chamber echoes with renewed shouting as the slavers catch the change in air. Striker snaps her head toward the sound, blades lifting, while the captives crowd toward the new exit.

The Climb Toward the Captives
Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Follow Striker. Move now.

The cry goes through the cave like a spark in dry grass, and the girls break into a panicked run, boots slapping stone as they surge after Striker.

Austin keeps the rough opening behind them under his control. The broken wall tightens stone on stone as the last of the fugitives clear the threshold, sealing the chamber away from the retreat.

Striker swings into the lead, moving low and fast through the escape passage, her blades held wide to catch anything that follows.

Elf Girls

Elf Girls

This way, keep up!

The tunnel bends, cold air rushing harder now, and behind them the slavers' shouting dulls to a distant roar cut off by stone.

The group runs deeper into the caverns, the forest wind ahead and the closed wall behind, while every footfall asks the same question, whether anyone is close enough to catch them.

"Striker, I can sense a potential exit. Hang to the right, and I can open up the wall-" You are cut off as a hole opens up from the ceiling and a burly man drops out, carrying a heavy axe over his shoulder. The leader of the White Devils. You grab a young desert elf in your arms and pull her back as he swings at her.

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +0)

The Climb Toward the Captives

A shadow punches through the ceiling, and a burly White Devil drops into the tunnel with an axe in hand. Stone chips burst across the passage as the captive he targets jerks back against Austin’s grasp.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

He is too close.

Austin hauls the young desert elf back hard, yanking her out of the axe’s path. The swing tears through empty air where her head was a breath ago, biting sparks from the wall instead.

Striker

Striker

Move. Now.

The girl stumbles against Austin’s chest, safe but shaking, while the leader lands in a crouch ahead of them. Behind him, the tunnel remains tight and choked with fleeing feet, with no room to scatter.

Burly White Devil

Burly White Devil

Found you.

Striker shifts to block the lane, blades up and shoulders set, as the cave ceiling sheds dust around the new hole. The escape has become a choke point, and the leader squares up between the group and the passage forward.

You press your hands to the adjacent wall, making another path. "Striker, I can take the girls this way. Catch up with us when you can." You proceed into the neighboring tunnel, as you move, you are met with a small detachment of white devils scouring the tunnels. They are in their full garb, daggers in hand, ready to fight.

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled +1)

The Climb Toward the Captives

Austin presses both palms to the stone, and the wall answers in a hush of grit. A seam opens under his touch, then widens into a narrow, rough-cut passage just big enough for one file of fleeing bodies.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

Striker, I can take the girls this way. Catch up when you can.

The young elves hurry into the new breach, ducking low as Austin leads them through the dust-dark gap. The tunnel beyond slopes sideways, and the sounds of the chamber behind them thin to a muffled clang.

Then lanternlight flashes ahead. A small detachment of White Devils rounds the neighboring tunnel, daggers out, their boots scraping to a stop at the sight of the sudden opening.

Burly White Devil

Burly White Devil

There! Cut them off!

Austin and the girls are already through the breach, but the new passage has dumped them face-to-face with more hunters, and the rescue route bends into a fresh knife-edge of danger.

Striker

Striker

Keep moving. I will meet you there.

You gather shadow spirits in your hands, tendrils bursting forth as they pin the attackers to the wall. Your attack manages to knock back three of them, but the fourth slips through, his dagger raised as he brings down his arm, weapon aimed at your throat. Just then, the little snow elf girl steps in front of you, eyes closed, and hands outstretched. "Leave Mr. Human ALONE!" She yells, and a ball of packed ice and snow sends him flying back to the far wall.

SUCCESS (Great Arcana, rolled -1)

The Climb Toward the Captives

Austin draws the shadow spirits in tight, and the tunnel seems to lose its edges. Dark tendrils whip from his hands, striking three White Devils flat against the stone as their daggers jerk uselessly wide.

The fourth slaver breaks the line, lunging through the gap with his blade lifted for Austin's throat, but the smallest elf girl steps hard between them.

Elf Girl

Elf Girl

Leave Mr. Human alone!

She thrusts both hands out, and a packed burst of ice and snow slams the slaver backward into the far wall.

Striker

Striker

Good. Move, both of you.

The pinned hunters strain against the stone while frost glitter falls through the lantern glow, and the choke point opens for a heartbeat.

Ahead, the passage bends into darkness, but behind them the White Devils are no longer chasing, they are fighting the wall.

You finally make it to the edge of the cave. With one final push, you part the wall and make it into the open. "We're out. You're free, girls," you say as you collapse onto the ground, exhausted from using your spirits. The young elves celebrate, hugging one another, Striker, and some even give you gentle pats on the head, a small gesture that makes it all worth it. Striker looks to you, small smirk on her face, "I must admit, I am impressed. I didn't think much of you at first, but I can admit that you were absolutely instrumental in this operation. You have my thanks," she says, bowing low. You feel a wave of heat rush to your cheeks as you wave off her words, "Nah, it was nothing. All I did was run away; you were way more amazing when you-" Suddenly, the ground begins to shake, and before you know it, a towering mass explodes out of the ground. It's a demon. A battered and beaten member of the White Devils stands atop its shoulder with a demon stone in his hand.

SUCCESS (Superb Perception, rolled +0)

The Climb Toward the Captives

Austin breaks through the last thin seam of stone, and cool night air hits him first. The cave mouth yawns open behind him, moonlight flooding the ledge as he drops to one knee, spent.

Austin Ithens

Austin Ithens

We’re out. You’re free, girls.

The elf captives spill into the open, half laughing, half crying, clutching one another before swarming toward Striker and Austin. Small hands pat Austin’s head, quick and grateful.

Striker

Striker

I admit it, I misjudged you. You are instrumental. You have my thanks.

Striker bows low. Austin answers with a weak wave, heat rising in his cheeks as the girls keep celebrating around him.

Then the ground shudders under everyone’s feet. Pebbles skitter downhill. The joy breaks as the moonlit earth bulges outward.

A towering demon erupts from the soil outside the cave mouth, and a battered White Devil stands on its shoulder, gripping a demon stone like a cruel prize.
