The Monohuth shadows pull back into the cave mouth, but not far. The wind drags up their stink, and the ridge below still rustles with movement. Thrumka’s blood darkens his forearm as the clan kin hold their shields ready, waiting on his call.

Runa

Runa

They are not broken, only checked. If we let them breathe, they return stronger.

She lifts her chin toward the dark opening, then glances to the line of kin, already measuring who can move and who must hold.

Thrumka

Thrumka

Hold the hall. Take the wounded back. I go with the strongest to press them.

The Scout

The Scout

They have a side tunnel. I saw torch glimmer in the rock.

That warning cuts through the ridge wind. The clan kin tighten their grips, and Runa’s eyes snap to Thrumka, waiting to see whether he takes the hunt or yields the next command.

Runa

Runa

Then choose fast. If you lead the push, I keep the hall and mark the wounded. If you stay, I take the forward line.

Thrumka tears a strip from the ragged cloth at his waist and presses it against the cut. Blood smears dark across the fabric as he wraps it snug around his forearm.

He cinches the knot tight. The sting settles into a firm, tolerable pressure, and his grip on the axe steadies.

Runa

Runa

Better. A leader should not bleed away for pride.

The Scout

The Scout

That will hold for a while. I have seen men keep fighting with worse.

The kin ease a fraction, shields still up but shoulders less rigid. Cold wind slips through the threshold, carrying the stink from the cave mouth and the faint scrape of movement far below.

Runa

Runa

If you go, I keep the hall. If you stay, I lead the push. Either way, the choice has to be yours.

The bandage sits secure. Around them, the broken boards creak under shifting boots, and the dark slope waits for the next order.

I grab a large war apron from nearby, made of thick hide and protecting the arms and front torso most and put it on

Thrumka snatches up the thick hide apron from the bench pile and swings it against his chest.

The straps cross his back, tugging tight over his shoulders and forearms, the hide settling heavy across his front.

He works the final tie with one thick hand, the apron sitting firm now, made for blows and splinters alike.

Runa

Runa

Good. Now you look like the one who means to stand in front.

The Scout shifts at the threshold and peers down the slope, where the cold still carries that cave-stink and a scrape of feet under stone.

The Scout

The Scout

They are not gone. They are waiting for someone to follow.

The kin tighten their grip on shields, and the open ridge seems to narrow around the choice.

Thrumka lowers his head and speaks the prayer into the cold, asking Amon to hear the hall and turn the Monohuth away.

The words leave his mouth clean, but the threshold answers with a bitter draft, and the cave-stink swells like a hand closing around the door.

From the slope below comes a low answering howl, not retreat but recognition, as if something in the dark has heard him plainly.

Runa

Runa

They know the prayer now. If they meant to scatter, they would have run.

The Scout

The Scout

No, look, they have not gone farther back. They are circling the path below.

The kin shift uneasily, and one shield edge scrapes the floorboards. The hall seems to wait for Thrumka’s next order while the slope below tightens with unseen movement.

Thrumka keeps his hand on the threshold and prays again, quieter this time, with no show for the hall to lean on. The words are plain, meant for Amon alone.

The draft answers first. It drags the cave-stink through the doorway and sets the hanging hides whispering, but nothing holy breaks the dark.

Runa

Then we stand on our own steel and breath. That is still a kind of answer.

Thrumka rises from the threshold and lifts his axe toward the open dark. His voice carries once, firm and plain, and the hall answers by moving with him.

The kin snap into shape behind him, benches dragged aside, shields taken up, feet pounding across the boards toward the doorway.

Runa

Runa

There. With him. Drive them back.

At the command, the front line surges out into the cold. The cave stink meets steel, then breaks as the Monohuth give ground.

One by one, the dark shapes vanish below the lip of the path. The hall does not chase blindly, it holds the height and cuts off the rush.

The Scout

The Scout

They are falling back! They are going into the deep way!

The last threat slips into the caves, and the doorway clears. Behind Thrumka, the Sutros stand guarded, breathing hard, alive.

Thrumka lunges down from the threshold and the cold path takes his weight. The cave mouth yawns ahead, and the nearest retreating shape turns too late.

He catches the fleeing Monohuth in the open, shoulder to shoulder with the dark line of the passage, and drives it back with the flat of his axe and his stride.

The others recoil deeper into the cave way, and the first clash forces them off the path. The entrance is his for the moment.

But the rush costs him. His wounded forearm tears open under the pull of the charge, and hot blood slicks the wrap beneath his grip.

Behind him, Runa checks the line at the doorway, keeping the kin from overcommitting while the cave stink rolls up over the boards.

The Scout

Thrumka surges into the cave mouth, boots striking stone hard enough to scatter grit. The retreating Monohuth ahead of him whips around at the sound, too late to make a clean escape.

He closes the gap in a few savage strides, axe raised, forcing the dark figures to yield ground deeper into the passage.

One lunging shape checks his advance, and Thrumka cuts it aside with the haft. The hit jolts his wounded arm, and the bandage at his forearm blooms wet under the grip.

The Scout

The Scout

He is driving them back, now, before they can turn us!

Runa

Runa

Hold the door. Let him make them run.

Behind him, the hall mouth stays open, but the line holds. Ahead, the cave narrows and the fleeing Monohuth are forced into a tighter, darker bend.

Thrumka lands inside the bend at last, in striking range of the rear shape. The caves stink thick around him, and the next blow is his to choose.

The Scout

Thrumka drives into the bend at a dead sprint, boots scraping stone, and the rear Monohuth whirls too late. His greataxe comes down in a hard, brutal arc, forcing the figure back into the dark.

The blow lands clean enough to break their line. One body stumbles into another, and the passage snaps open for a heartbeat as the cave-mouth chase becomes a cramped crush of panicked limbs.

Thrumka keeps his footing, but the swing tears at his wounded forearm. Blood darkens the wrap and spots the stone at his heel.

The Scout

The Scout

He breaks them. Push them deeper!

Runa

Runa

Good. Keep the pressure on, Thrumka.

Ahead, the Monohuth reel toward the tighter throat of the cave, where the darkness swallows their shapes. The hall behind stays clear, the cold reek of the caves still pouring over the threshold.

For the moment, the enemy is driven off the immediate path to the Sutros, but the bend ahead still holds movement, and the next choice waits in the black.

Thrumka steps into the bend and meets the nearest Monohuth with a killing chop. The cave floor jerks under its collapse, and the others flinch back from the sight.

He does not stop. A second brutal strike drops another attacker, and the cramped passage fills with the crack of bone and the wet skid of bodies on stone.

Fear spreads faster than steel. The remaining Monohuth jostle, shove, and break, scrambling deeper into the black throat of the caves instead of meeting him head-on.

At the doorway, Runa sees the rout and lifts her chin, ready to hold the hall while the retreat hardens into flight. The Scout stares into the dark, breathing hard, as the smell of the caves hangs thicker.

Thrumka stands alone in the narrow bend for a beat, axe wet, path clear, and the threat to the Sutros pulled back out of reach.

From deeper within the tunnel, the fleeing shapes vanish around another turn, and the cave answers with empty dark. The next choice waits, but the immediate ambush is broken.

The words land. The nearest kin loosen their grips and hold the doorway instead of pushing deeper.

The Scout exhales shakily, but the sound catches on the stench from below. Cold air keeps pouring up from the dark, carrying the caves with it.

The Scout

The Scout

Aye, if they circle back, we will see them.

Thrumka's forearm throbs where the bandage has reopened, and a few drops fall onto the stone as he holds the line. Down in the tunnel, the retreating scrabble fades farther away.

Runa watches the bend and waits for Thrumka's next order, while the hall behind her stays braced at the threshold.

A warm hush settles over the threshold. The cold draft still threads up from the cave, but it seems less sharp against the stone.

Runa

That is the sound of a leader who means it.

The Scout relaxes his shoulders and glances from Thrumka to the dark mouth below, as if measuring how far the threat has been pushed back.

The Scout

The Scout

If the caves want us, they know where to find us now.

Runa gives a short nod toward the hall behind her, then back to Thrumka, waiting in the quiet for his next word.

I pull from my boot a rolled in soft cloth rolled into a neatly wrapped wad with holly berries in it and check on them, i consume 4 if theyre not mashed or lost

SUCCESS (Superb Health, rolled +2)

Thrumka bends his boot toward the firelight and works free a small cloth roll, fingers careful around the knot. He parts the wrapping just enough to inspect the berries inside, then keeps the good ones and sets four to his tongue.

Their tart bite cuts through the copper taste on his breath. The ache in his forearm stays, but his grip firms and his shoulders settle into a steadier line.

Runa

Runa

There. Better to face what comes with a clear head.

The Scout

The Scout

They are still below us. I can hear them shifting in the dark.

Runa glances once toward the open cave mouth, where the cold stink still slides over the stone, then back to Thrumka as if weighing his next order.

Runa

Runa

Good. Keep that arm yours.

The Scout

The Scout

They heard the scrape too. They are moving, not fleeing.

A hard thud answers from below the threshold, then another. Dust shakes loose from the cave lip, and the cold stink of the tunnels rolls thicker into the hall.

Runa shifts her weight toward the doorway and lifts her chin at the dark below, ready for Thrumka's next call.

The passage below gives a low, hunting silence, like something waiting to spring or be driven off for good.

Thrumka hooks two fingers under the bandage and peels it back just enough to see the cut. The flesh is clean, red, and already knitting, with no black seep, no swelling, and no fever heat.

A pale thread of holly sap still clings in the blood, and where it touches the skin, the sting fades faster than before. The berry has taken well.

Runa

The Scout

The Scout

Then the dark below has not marked him yet.

Another thud raps the threshold, but weaker than before, as if something below is retreating deeper instead of testing the door. The smell of the caves stays in the hall, sharp and foul.

Runa lowers her hand and steps half a pace aside, clearing the mouth of the passage for Thrumka. The way down is open, and the waiting below now feels chosen.

Runa watches his face, then shifts her weight back toward the hall, keeping the threshold open and ready.

Runa

The Scout’s eyes narrow into the dark, and his grip tightens on nothing at his side. A low clatter answers from deep under the floorboards of the world, too far to count, too even to be a rush.

The staff settles against his grip as if it belongs there, steady and familiar. The foul draft from the caves keeps spilling in, but the hall seems to draw itself taller around him.

A thin pulse shivers through the shaft anyway, felt more than seen, and the carved grip warms under his palm. The wrong part is not the wood, but the wait between beats.

Below the floorboards of the hall, the rough voices shift closer, then split. The cave smell pushes harder through the doorway, sharp as wet stone and old breath.

The Scout

They are pausing on the bend. If that staff is a key, this is the lock.

The staff settles heavier in Thrumka's hand, and for one breath the carved head aligns with the dark mouth below as if pointing toward some hidden seam in the rock.

Look at the bend. They felt that.

Below the threshold, rough voices snap into motion. Something shifts in the dark passage, and a narrow patch of stone ahead catches the staff’s faint glow like a hidden sign.

The cave wall ahead draws apart with a grinding sigh, revealing a narrow stair cut into the dark. The foul draft pours stronger for a moment, then thins.

The chalk in Thrumka’s fingers cracks away to dust, and the staff’s glow settles into a hard beam. From below, the Monohuth voices break into startled shouting, then scatter deeper into the tunnels.

The Choice at the Threshold

Thrumka keeps the pace and the bend gives way under his boots. The Monohuth scatter deeper, but the passage narrows behind them, and the stair above slips out of immediate reach.

His staff light stays fixed on their backs as he advances. The cave air bites harder here, and the rank smell from below rolls up in a thick, sour wave.

One retreating shape slams a shoulder into the wall and leaves a smear of pale dust. The others jolt past it, no longer in order.

The Scout

The Scout

That path bends to a dead shelf ahead. Cut them off there!

Runa

Runa

Do not let them turn you in the dark. Keep the light forward.

Thrumka drives on, and the fleeing cluster breaks at the shelf, trapped between stone and glare. Their retreat stops being a chase and becomes a pressed retreat into deeper black.

One Monohuth throws an arm up to guard its face. Another jerks back into the others, tangled and off balance.

Thrumka

Thrumka

The nearest Monohuth recoil from the glare, but their heels scrape on a hidden lip in the floor, revealing a side slit beyond the shelf.

Cold breath spills from that slit, older and cleaner than the reeking passage behind them, and the trapped enemy bunches toward it.

Thrumka angles the Staff of Light straight at the seam and holds it there. The glow thins, slips into the cut stone, and the hidden line answers with a dry click.

The shelf wall shifts. A narrow slab grinds inward, spilling colder air and a wash of pale dust from beyond.

The slit in the floor widens with a stone groan, enough for a body to force through. The Monohuth nearest it recoil, trapped between glare and opening.

Thrumka forces the staff’s glow into the seam, and the hidden cut blooms pale again. The stone seam stays obedient, the opening held wide for a breath longer.

The Scout

Runa

Runa

Then choose, Thrumka. Shut it, or send them down.

Below the slit, the Monohuth lunge toward the light and find nothing but the narrow opening and each other. The lead creature slips backward into the dark passage, dragged by the press behind it.

The floor stone grinds with a final harsh bite. The slit tightens on empty air, then seals enough to break the rush of bodies below.

Cold air fades to a thin draft. The route is cut off, and the cave answers with distant, frustrated cries instead of an ambush at the stair.
