The hall is still braced around Thrumka's raised axe when the heavy doors slam wide. A bloodied scout lurches in, one hand pressed to his side, the other flung toward the highlands.

The Scout

The Scout

Monohuth... down from the caves. They are coming fast.

Mugs freeze halfway to mouths. Runa turns from the challenge, jaw set, while the clan kin murmur and rise from their benches.

Thrumka

Thrumka

The scout is hurt, but still standing.

The Scout

The Scout

They were howling by the ridge. I ran for the hall. We need blades, now.

Runa

Runa

If they reach the Sutros, the contest means nothing. Give the word, Thrumka.

The room waits on him, fear and trust hanging together in the smoke-thick air.

Thrumka lowers his head once, axe still in hand. The hall hushes around him as if even the beams are listening.

Thrumka

Thrumka

Amon, guide and guard us.

The words leave him, but the smoke and rafters give nothing back. No chill of answer, no bright sign, only the crackle of fire and the scout’s ragged breath.

The Scout

The Scout

There is no time for silence. They are at the ridge paths already.

Runa

Runa

Then we move on what we have. Thrumka, hold the hall. I take the doorway and call the kin.

The nearest clan kin answer at once, dragging benches into place and wrenching spears free. Thrumka’s prayer does not settle the fear, but it does not break him either.

Outside, a distant howl rolls down from the dark hills, and every face turns toward it.

I pray and acknowledge that amon is our guide and gaurdian

Thrumka lifts his chin and speaks his prayer plainly, naming Amon as guide and guardian. The hall stays still long enough to hear the fire snap in the hearth.

For a breath, the torchlight steadies on his helm and axe, as if the room itself takes the vow with him. Then the moment passes, quiet but whole.

The scout swallows hard and straightens, watching Thrumka with a shaken kind of relief. A smear of blood drips from his fingers to the floorboards.

Runa

Runa

That is better than waiting for a sign. We have a guide, now we use him.

A few clan kin nod at that, their fear easing into purpose. Benches hold the line at the doors, and spears settle into ready hands.

The Scout

The Scout

The ridge paths are not empty. If the caves are open, they will come in threes and fives, fast and hungry.

Runa turns back toward Thrumka, her voice lower now, less challenge than offer. The hall waits for his answer, and the defense waits with it.

I say, tend to him, to our clerks (skill based members)

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled -1)

The Monohuth Warning

Thrumka points at the scout and then to the side benches, and the hall obeys at once.

Thrumka

Thrumka

Tend to him. You clerks, with the wounded first.

Two kin peel off from the barricade, one with clean cloth, one with a cup of water. Another hauls a rush lamp closer, and the scout is eased onto a bench before his knees can give again.

Runa snaps short orders to the rest, splitting the skilled hands from the spear line. Her eyes flick to Thrumka, then back to the door, measuring how the hall answers him.

The Scout

The Scout

They move fast. He heard, and they listened.

The scout’s blood makes a dark track across the boards as a cloth is pressed to his arm. A clerk curses under his breath, because the stain lands on the tally slate in his lap.

Outside, something slams against the outer timbers, once, hard enough to shake dust from the lintel. The wounded scout stares at the doors and spits out one ragged word. 'Now.'

I respond and take a blind spot position by the inside side of the door

Thrumka slips along the inside wall, moving behind the bench line and into the narrow blind side of the door. He keeps low, axe ready, while the shouted orders and the scout’s breathing stay behind him.

From his new angle, he sees the door beams from the side, the kindling gap at the latch, and the knees of the nearest kin braced to hold. The second slam lands through the wood, but the barricade takes it.

Runa

Runa

There. If they break, it is not here. Hold the line.

Runa shifts two kin toward the far wall, clearing the center lane without wasting a body. She catches Thrumka’s eye for a heartbeat, then gives a sharp nod toward the hidden angle he has claimed.

The Scout

The Scout

He is in the strike fold now. They will not see him first.

A draft crawls under the door, carrying wet cave stink and a rasp of nails on timber. One of the bench legs is already wedged loose, ready to be yanked free if the first shape forces in.

I wait, i strike once they get in

The door buckles inward on a crack of timber, and the first pale face surges into the gap. Thrumka meets it with one brutal swing.

His axe bites through the opening and drives the intruder back out of sight. A second shape behind it recoils, snarling in the dark, while the barricade shudders but holds.

Runa

Runa

Now. Press them from the breach!

The kin slam forward with shields and benches. The lane clears for Thrumka’s reach, and the smell of wet cave-stink breaks under smoke and splintered wood.

Thrumka

Thrumka

The opening is wide enough for one good cut.

Outside, footsteps scramble away from the threshold. Inside, the hall does not break, it answers, tight and united behind Thrumka and Runa.

The Scout

The Scout

They falter. The ridge line may hold if we push them back now.

I say, the others! And i push the attack

Thrumka drives forward through the breach lane, and the attackers give ground under his shove.

The nearest Monohuth is forced back into the dark, and the opening stays in the defenders’ hands.

Thrumka

Thrumka

The others, with me.

At his cry, the kin surge with him, turning the gap into a hard press of shields, wood, and iron.

A clawed strike catches Thrumka’s forearm as he leans in, a sharp sting that costs him blood but not his footing.

Runa

Runa

Hold that line. They break if we keep the pressure.

The Scout

The Scout

That is the push. The ridge is still ours.

With gusto i swing at them, pushing to outside

Thrumka whips the greataxe through the gap, and the blade bites the front of the Monohuth press hard enough to shove them off balance.

The nearest cave-born attacker stumbles backward into its own kin, and the whole mass spills away from the threshold.

Wood scrapes, shields grind, and the defenders surge after the opening, driving the fight out into the cold.

Thrumka crosses the breach itself, and the hall is no longer the battleground. The line has become an outward push.

Runa

Runa

Out, then! Keep them moving, keep the door clear!

A sharp sting burns along Thrumka’s forearm as the swing’s recoil and a stray claw both catch him, leaving fresh blood on his grip.

The Scout

The Scout

The ridge holds. If we press now, they do not get back inside.

I swing lethally

SUCCESS (Good Axe Specialist, rolled +0)

Thrumka brings the axe around in a brutal, exact arc, and the leading Monohuth drops out of the charge before it can reach the ridge line. The front ranks break on the sight of it, skidding over blood-slick earth.

But the recoil tears at his wounded forearm, and fresh blood slicks the haft in his grip. The strain bites deep enough to slow the next swing unless he tightens it fast.

Runa

Runa

Hold the line! Thrumka has split them, now drive them from the Sutros!

The clan kin answer at once, boots stamping, shields forward, and the retreat widens into a rout. The cave-born attackers give ground toward the dark slope.

The Scout

The Scout

That is it. They are falling back from the villages.

Runa catches Thrumka’s eye over the churn of bodies, her command steady now, his strike and hers locking into one push. The door stands clear behind them, but the cold open ridge still calls for a choice, press after the fleeing threat or seal the hall and tend the blood.
