The restored seal exhales a deep stone note. Beneath the overlook, a concealed stair unfolds into darkness, its steps marked with the royal crown.

The complete ledger entry confirms it. Your bloodline awakens the waystone, and the route anchors without consuming your personal teleportations.

Maelin follows Kael down the stair, clutching her ledger. The waystone opens a silent passage, carrying them beneath Veyrath while both of Kael's teleportations remain untouched.

They emerge in a buried command vault. A middle-aged elf man with a gaunt build, iron-gray hair, and a torn black officer's coat is pinned behind collapsed stone, surrounded by maps and sealed orders.

Maelin Orra

A Hollow King officer survived. The route brought us directly to him, but those orders may matter more than his rank.

The waystone settles into the vault wall, anchoring the passage behind them. No combat gift has been spent, and the trapped officer watches Kael through the dust.

You carry Veyrath's waystone. Then the royal bloodline has returned. Tell me, heir, are you here to read the orders or silence their witness?

“I keep the officer alive and make no hostile move. I tell him, “You are more valuable as a witness than a corpse. Start with the orders.” I use Great Reasoning, Good Perception, Lore, Superb Magic, Arcane Heritage, and my status as Veyrath’s recognized heir to examine every map, sealed order, cipher, and command mark while questioning him about the Hollow King’s forces, commanders, routes, objectives, weaknesses, and knowledge of the royal waystone. I specifically ask what dormant commands the waystone still possesses and how they are awakened. The waystone remains anchored to the vault entrance so he cannot flee, but I spend neither personal teleport and use none of my once-per-combat gifts unless he attacks.”

Kael Veyr

You are more valuable as a witness than a corpse. Start with the orders.

Kael makes no hostile move. With the waystone anchored at the vault entrance, he examines every map, sealed order, cipher, and command mark while Maelin records his findings.

The orders name three forces: the Ashen Host under Marshal Veyr, the Veiled Choir under Seris Thorne, and the breach-beasts commanded by no mortal. They converge on Veyrath.

The royal marks answer Kael's scrutiny. He reconstructs their routes and deciphering keys, revealing supply paths, commander seals, ward weaknesses, and the Hollow King's objective: seize the waystone and reopen the sealed center.

The Ashen Host advances from the eastern ford. The Choir infiltrates through old burial roads. Their weakness is separation: neither commander trusts the other, and both fear the breach-beasts.

The waystone retains three dormant commands. It can call a remembered road, veil a royal passage from hostile sight, and bind a threshold against passage. Bloodline authority awakens each through the crown-heart, with the proper command spoken aloud.

The officer yields every route, cipher, and command mark. Beyond the requested knowledge, Kael finds a concealed royal counterseal that can sever the Hollow King's claim from any waystone passage.

Secure the royal counterseal

“I secure the royal countersign before doing anything else. Using Superb Magic, Great Reasoning, Lore, Arcane Heritage, and my bloodline bond with the waystone, I verify the countersign’s exact wording, pronunciation, purpose, and limitations. Maelin records a protected copy while I commit it to memory. I then test the countersign only against the already-anchored vault passage, attempting to sever any Hollow King authority over that route without closing it to myself or consuming either personal teleport. At the same time, I identify and memorize the exact bloodline commands for Call a Remembered Road, Veil a Royal Passage, and Bind a Threshold, establishing them as separate waystone functions rather than personal teleportation. I preserve all combat gifts unless attacked.”

Kael lays the royal counterseal beside the waystone. Superb magic threads through its script, while reasoning separates the exact pronunciation, purpose, and limits from deliberate decoy marks.

The countersign proves designed to sever the Hollow King's claim without denying rightful bloodline passage. Its wording fixes the authority cut to one anchored route, and cannot command the waystone itself.

I will copy it beneath three wards. If the ink fades, the protected impression remains in my ledger and in my memory.

Maelin records the countersign in a guarded cipher. Kael commits every stroke and syllable to memory, then applies it to the anchored vault passage without closing the road.

The passage shivers. A black pressure peels away from its threshold and collapses into the counterseal, severing the Hollow King's authority while leaving Kael's bloodline access intact. Both teleports remain untouched.

The waystone yields three distinct commands to his bond: Call a Remembered Road, Veil a Royal Passage, and Bind a Threshold. Each belongs to the relic, not to Kael's personal teleportation.

The severance burns a thin line across Kael's palm and rings once through the vault. The trapped officer hears it, and his wary gaze fixes on the waystone with renewed alarm.
