The Information-Desk Clerk

Rose and Evan pass the student center information desk. A young adult woman clerk with deep brown skin, a sturdy build, short curly hair, and a bright orange cardigan leans forward with a stack of flyers.

The Information-Desk Clerk

The Information-Desk Clerk

Evan, there you are. You and your partner should come to our couples’ residence mixer tonight. It’s a great way to meet people on your floor.

The clerk offers Rose a pale blue flyer decorated with two linked paper houses. Only after extending it does she notice Evan’s expression and the matching distance between him and Rose.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

Tessa, we’re roommates. Just roommates. The housing assignment is unusual.

A few nearby students slow beside the bulletin boards, smiling into their schedules. Their glances move from the flyer to Rose and Evan, turning an ordinary walk into a small public spectacle.

The Information-Desk Clerk

The Information-Desk Clerk

Oh. Sorry, Evan. My mistake. The event is still open to roommates, technically, but I can give you a different flyer.

Tessa keeps the friendly smile, though the correction arrives after the attention has already settled. Evan lowers his schedule, visibly recognizing the misunderstanding too late to prevent it, while the flyer remains offered to Rose.

Rose Night

We’ll think about the mixer. I promise I’ll follow through on our conversation from earlier, Evan.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

Okay. We can talk it through later, and decide together whether the mixer sounds worth going to.

Evan accepts the promise without pressing for an answer. Tessa lowers the linked-houses flyer slightly, giving Rose room to choose without another assumption.

The Information-Desk Clerk

The Information-Desk Clerk

That sounds reasonable. I’ll leave you with the roommate flyer, then. It has the time and location on the back.

Tessa turns the pale blue flyer over and offers it again, this time as a practical invitation rather than a romantic one. The bulletin-board traffic resumes around them.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

We can look at it after we finish here. I still want to hear what you think about the schedule and your next steps.

The misunderstanding settles into an ordinary exchange. Evan waits beside Rose, and the flyer rests between them while the student center carries on.

“I leave the desk with Evan before more gossip spreads”

Rose gathers the pale blue flyer and steps away from the information desk with Evan. They clear the bulletin-board traffic before the nearby students can turn their curiosity into more commentary.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

That was a clean escape. We can look at the flyer somewhere quieter, or just keep moving and let everyone find something else to discuss.

Evan matches Rose’s pace toward the student center doors, keeping the schedule tucked beneath one arm. Behind them, the information desk and its linked-houses flyer recede into ordinary hallway noise.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

For the schedule, I still think the next step is checking the registration dates. After that, we can decide about the mixer without an audience.

The glass doors open onto the brighter plaza. Students cross between buildings with folders and drinks, but none of them stop as Rose and Evan move into the flow.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

There’s a bench by the library if you want to talk now. Or we can head back to the dorm and put the schedule away first.

Evan gestures toward the library path, leaving the decision open while continuing beside Rose. The student center’s gossip fades behind them, replaced by footsteps and the low sound of plaza conversation.

Roommate Mixer Flyer

Rose Night leaves student center plaza behind and arrives at the dorm.

“Head back to the dorm with Evan”

The dorm hallway is cooler than the plaza, carrying detergent, distant laughter, and the soft click of doors closing. Evan unlocks their room, and a fresh envelope rests on the floor inside.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

That was not there this morning. Maybe housing finally sent the written confirmation about the room assignment.

The envelope bears both room numbers and a blue housing-services stamp. Beside it, the cleared desk waits beneath the lamp, with enough space for Rose’s schedule and the pale mixer flyer.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

We can read it together, or put it aside until after you’ve had a chance to settle in. Either way, the decision is yours.

Evan sets his map and schedule on his own desk, then leaves the envelope untouched between the two halves of the room. Sunlight reaches the blue-sheeted bed through the half-open blinds.

Rose Night

The room is quieter with the door closed.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

I’ll get some water while you decide where everything goes. When you’re ready, we can make the room feel more like yours.

He moves toward the shared kitchenette, giving Rose the clear, open half of the room and the unopened envelope waiting on the floor between them.

Confirm the written roommate arrangement

“I pick up the envelope and read the written roommate arrangement.”

FAILURE (Good Reasoning, rolled -2)

Rose picks up the envelope and slides one finger beneath the flap. The paper inside is a cramped photocopy, its center blurred by a wide printer streak.

She can make out the room numbers, shared-housing designation, and signatures, but several lines about duration and review are swallowed by the distortion. The full arrangement will not come clear from this page.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

That is impressively unhelpful. I can read enough to know it confirms the assignment, but not enough to tell us how long it lasts.

At the bottom, beneath the damaged text, a handwritten note remains visible: Housing Services can provide a clean copy and explain the review process at the student center desk.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

The note gives us a next step, at least. We can ask for the readable version instead of guessing from this one.

Evan comes back with two glasses of water and looks from the photocopy to Rose. The unreadable clauses leave the arrangement unsettled, but the housing desk now offers a practical way to clarify it.

Roommate Arrangement Envelope

“I pick up the envelope and read the written roommate arrangement with Evan.”

SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +2)

Rose holds the photocopy beneath the desk lamp and reads it line by line with Evan. By comparing the faint text, room numbers, and signatures, they reconstruct the arrangement’s essential terms.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

It confirms we’re assigned this room together for the academic year, with housing able to review the arrangement if either resident requests it.

The shared-housing designation is unmistakable, and both names appear beneath it. The printer streak still swallows the exact review timing, so Evan rereads the surrounding lines twice.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

So it’s official, not just a temporary mistake. But I don’t want to guess about the deadline for requesting a review.

Rose and Evan now have the central answer: the roommate assignment lasts through the academic year unless housing changes it through review. The unreadable deadline remains a specific detail to verify.

Evan Mercer

Evan Mercer

We can take this copy to Housing Services tomorrow and get the clean version. Tonight, at least, we know what the paper actually says.

He sets one glass beside Rose and places the photocopy flat on the desk. The roommate arrangement is understood, while the time spent deciphering it leaves the mixer flyer and schedule waiting nearby.
