The Stranger

The Stranger snatches for the wall, then freezes as the stone answers with a grinding turn. The stair behind them folds shut, and a seam of ancient corridor opens where there was only ruin a breath ago.

Dotti Nightshade keeps moving at the Stranger's side as the floor cants underfoot. Pale night air vanishes, replaced by damp stone and a low thrumming that seems to rise from the bones of the tower.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

It knows the document. It is drawing us in.

The document in Dotti's grip gives off a faint, stubborn pulse, and the corridor walls answer with a second shudder, like something old waking up hungry for its own name.

Dotti Nightshade

The lock on this place is not finished.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Hold it steady, Dotti. Whatever this tower wants, it wants that page.

Far above, the Watchman's pursuit fades into the machinery of stone. Ahead, the corridor darkens, waiting for the pair to choose between turning back and pressing deeper.

Dotti Nightshade

There is a catch in the rhythm, just here.

The panel loosens with a wet grind, sliding aside just enough to expose a narrow fingerhold and a darker passage beyond.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

You found it. Move before it changes its mind.

The Stranger shifts back from the seam, keeping clear of the opening as the tower’s thrumming deepens around them.

Cold air spills out of the gap, carrying the smell of dust, old ink, and something metallic far below.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Dotti, the way down is open. Do you take it?

The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti slips into the narrow passage, the stone brushing close on both sides as the tower’s pulse fades behind her.

The Stranger follows one step in her wake, shoulders turned to shield the opening while the hidden panel grinds partly shut.

Cold darkness swallows them, and the air changes, drier now, threaded with old ink and buried damp.

Ahead, the passage bends around a ribbed arch of fitted stone, too neat for any forgotten crawlspace.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Keep close. This place still remembers us.

Somewhere behind the wall, a final scrape seals the landing away, and the corridor opens on a choice of two black turns.

Dotti leans into the darker turn, and the corridor answers with a thin draft that tastes of dust and old rain.

Dotti Nightshade

The dark branch is deeper, and the stonework changes there.

Her gaze catches a seam of fresher mortar along the left wall, half-hidden where the passage curves, proof that this turn has been worked more recently than the rest.

Beyond it, the black corridor opens into a low service bend, with a narrow slit of pale light leaking from floor level.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

You see it too. That was not there when I came through.

The Stranger stops short behind her, shoulders tight, as if the wall itself has begun listening.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

We have a hidden way ahead, or a mouth waiting to close. Which do you want first?

Dotti slides her fingers into the fresh seam, feeling for give in the mortar. One stone answers with a soft inward click.

The left wall loosens at her touch, and a narrow section pivots back with a hush of ground stone, exposing a slit of darkness beyond.

Cold air spills out, carrying the smell of damp earth and old ash, while the pale light from below sharpens into a hidden stair.

Dotti Nightshade

Wolf King Theodore

There it is. The tower still has secrets to spend.

A faint scrape rises from below, then stops, as if something deeper in the shaft has heard the wall open.

A heavy, rhythmic thudding vibrates through the stone floor, growing louder as the hidden stair reveals a chamber at its base.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Something is pacing down there, Dotti. It has been waiting for the seal to break.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The sound is too heavy to be human, and it is moving directly toward the base of these stairs.

I will extinguish my torch to hide our position from whatever is climbing up.

SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +1)

The Tower's Hidden Path

The Stranger

Dotti clamps a hand over the torch and smothers it fast. The flame dies to ember, then dark, and the stairwell drops into cold shadow.

Below, the rhythmic thudding shifts. Something pauses on the steps, as if listening to the dark breathe.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Good. Let it lose us in the black.

A narrow seam of pale light slides open along the wall ahead, not from the stairs, but from the hidden corridor itself. Stone grinds softly, releasing a draft.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

That was not there a moment ago.

The hidden passage yawns wider, revealing a tight ledge and a second descent beyond it, slick with old dust and rain-cold air.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Choose quickly, Dotti. Up the stairs, or through the opening.

I slip through the opening ahead

Dotti slips through first, a slim shadow on the ledge, and the hidden passage swallows her before the stair can echo her footfall.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There. Move.

The Stranger follows, one hand brushing the stone as the narrow way opens into a cramped landing below. Cold air spills up from deeper in the tower.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

This is not a stair built for guests.

Behind them, the hidden seam grinds shut with a final, dry click. The route back vanishes into bare wall.

Ahead, the landing ends at a dark slit and a drop, while a faint draft carries the smell of wet stone from below.

I go down into the dark slit

FAILURE (Fair Athletics, rolled -3)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti drops toward the slit, but the ledge gives her no clean footing. Her boot skids on damp stone, and she catches herself against the narrow sidewall instead of vanishing into the drop.

The passage below is no stair at all, only a steep throat of carved rock with no visible steps, too tight for a safe climb and too dark to judge its depth.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

No handholds here.

The Stranger grabs for Dotti’s sleeve and hauls her back from the edge as grit skitters over the lip and falls into blackness.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

That way is a fall, not a passage.

For a breath, the hidden landing seems to hold its breath with them. Then a narrow seam of pale light opens far below, revealing a second ledge deeper in the tower.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There, below. We either climb down together or wait for whatever that light belongs to.

I'll breathe a sigh of relief into the stranger's chest. I calmly say that we will climb down into the slit slowly but surely

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti lets the Stranger feel her steady breath, then turns to the slit. The pale glow below finds her glasses and the tips of her tattoos as she lowers one foot, testing the stone.

The ledge holds. She shifts her weight slowly, and the Stranger eases in behind her, giving her room instead of pulling.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

We climb down slowly, surely.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Good. Keep your center low, and trust the rock under your hands.

Together they descend into the throat of the tower, one careful hold at a time. The dark tightens around them, but the faint light below rises to meet their feet.

Halfway down, the stair gives way to a cramped landing no one mentioned, a blind notch cut into the wall. Dust lies untouched there, except for one fresh scrape leading inward.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There is a chamber ahead, or a trap with a door. Choose with your eyes open.

I stare intently trying to see what is ahead. I use my hands to feel the stone wall. It does feel like there is a latch there

SUCCESS (Legendary Perception, rolled -1)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti presses her palm to the fresh scrape, then finds the hidden latch by touch alone. The stone answers under her fingers with a neat, reluctant click.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

A latch.

The wall does not swing open yet, but one seam deepens, and cold air spills through it like breath from a held mouth.

Dotti shifts her hand lower, tracing the crack as if reading it. The hidden panel gives a little more, enough to show a thin slice of black space beyond.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There it is. Open it carefully, or the whole stair may answer.

A pale glow flickers from within the slit, not steady now, but waiting. Above them, the tower keeps its low, uneasy thrum.

The Stranger leans back to give Dotti room, eyes fixed on the seam. The hidden way is found, but it has not yet yielded.

I open the hidden seam carefully

SUCCESS (Legendary Thievery, rolled +0)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti eases the seam wider, and the hidden panel yields without a scrape. Blackness parts around her fingers, cold and dry as cellar air.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

It opens cleanly.

Inside, the pale glow strengthens just enough to outline a narrow, descending passage cut into the tower’s bones. The landing stays behind them, cramped and still.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Good. Keep low, and watch the floor.

The Stranger shifts aside, giving Dotti the mouth of the passage. The tower’s thrum deepens, then settles into a steady pulse.

Beyond the threshold, the corridor bends out of sight, and the air from below carries a damp, metallic chill. The hidden way is open now, but it leads somewhere unseen.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

After you. If this path is trapped, I would rather it catch me than you.

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti leans in first, but the passage answers her. The pale glow swells, then drops away as if something inside has blinked awake. A hidden stone seam groans somewhere below, and the narrow way shifts, not wider, but deeper.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

That was not meant to open to us.

The floor under the threshold slides a finger’s width, exposing a black slit of a stairwell that was not there a heartbeat ago. Cold air breathes up with the smell of ink and wet iron, and a thin, deliberate click comes from beyond the bend, like a latch being set by an unseen hand.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Someone else is working these secrets.

From the dark below, a low voice rises, calm and amused. "You are late, and she is still with you." The Stranger stiffens, and the new stair waits, half revealed, half trap.

Knowing the stranger May betray me, I push forward anyway dagger in hand and my runes lighting up with the power within ready to defend myself

FAILURE (Fair Willpower, rolled -2)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti commits to the step, dagger out, runes kindling along her skin. But the stair answers her weight with a sudden shift, and the landing tilts just enough to steal her balance without sending her down. The Stranger catches only air as the threshold creeps away from both of them.

Her light spills over the black opening below, and for one heartbeat she sees a narrow stone ledge to the left, half hidden by shadow and dust. The passage is not a straight descent, it forks around a sealed side door set into the wall.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Wait. Do not rush the center step.

The voice from below does not rise again, but the hush it leaves behind feels deliberate, as if something is listening for them to choose wrong. The hidden stair groans, then settles, turning the trap into a decision.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The left ledge is real, and the side door is newer than the stone around it.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There is another way in there. Or out.

Above them, the panel they came through thuds once and seals tighter, cutting off the landing behind. Ahead, the fork waits in cold dark, and the tower gives them only the choice it allows.

We step to the stairwell moving through cautiously. I still am wary of the stranger now. I just feel like you may betray me even though he has done nothing of the sort

SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +1)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti slips off the center step and takes the left ledge instead, moving with careful, measured weight. The stone holds. Cold air brushes past her boots from the side door, carrying a thin scent of dust and old mortar.

The Stranger follows a pace behind, keeping to the shadow of the wall. The fork behind them creaks softly as the stair settles into stillness, making the narrow ledge feel like the only sure ground in the tower.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The side door is newer, and the draft is stronger here.

Dotti reaches the door and pauses at its seam. The latch is dark with age, but the frame around it shows fresh tool marks, as if someone has opened it recently and tried hard to hide that fact.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

This is not part of the old stair. Someone has been through here before us.

A faint scrape answers from somewhere beyond the door, then stops. The sound is too soft to be the Watchman, but it is close enough to make the hidden passage feel suddenly occupied.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

If you mean to open it, do so now. If not, we choose the dark below and hope it ends somewhere better.

We decide the dark blue is better. I feel the stranger's hands around my waist turning me towards the opening and he says hurry. We must get through quickly

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti commits to the dark passage. The Stranger catches her at the waist, turns her cleanly toward the opening, and urges her through as the ledge falls away behind them.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The draft below is colder than the stair.

They slip past the threshold in one quick pull, boots finding the slanting steps beyond. The tower’s hidden stair vanishes behind their backs as the passage swallows them whole.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Hurry.

Above them, the old seam shuts with a stone-on-stone grind. The fork and the side door are gone from view, and the new passage narrows into a dead-end chamber of black rock and stale air.

A little farther in, the floor drops to a lower landing, and the tower changes shape around them, no longer a route but a room with no obvious return.

As we stepped through daggers suddenly dart towards us, the stranger grabs me rolls to the floor, protecting me with his body

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -2)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

Dotti drops into the roll as the first steel darts whistle overhead. The Stranger throws himself over her, taking the floor with her under his body as the missiles skitter into stone and vanish into the dark.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The floor is slicker than it looked.

One dart grazes Dotti’s sleeve, cutting cloth and drawing a thin sting of blood. The chamber answers with a sharp clatter from deeper ahead, like something has heard the impact.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Stay low.

He braces on one elbow, shielding her with his shoulder, and scans the black passage while the last dart trembles in the rock behind them.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There is a ledge to the left. Move on my mark.

Above them, the hidden seam remains shut, but the air ahead shifts, carrying a colder draft from the waiting chamber.

The stranger gives the go and we go very quickly the blood from my arm dripping into the stones. It almost seems as if the room drinks in my blood and my aura

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

The Tower's Hidden Path
The Stranger
The Stranger

At the Stranger’s mark, Dotti slips off the blood-slick stone and darts left, the cut on her arm leaving dark drops in a quick trail behind her. The floor seems to drink the stains as she reaches the ledge.

The draft is stronger here.

The narrow shelf opens beside a black drop, and the passage ahead bends into a tighter throat of rock. The tower’s thrum deepens underfoot.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Now. Keep moving.

Dotti plants a hand on the wall and pushes through without hesitation, the last of the dart-hush fading behind her. Her aura brushes the stone and flickers against the dark like a faint, pale sheen.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

The blood is waking something in here.

Ahead, the hidden stair opens into a cramped chamber. One exit yawns wider than the rest, while the other end seals itself with a grinding seal of stone.

A giant monster rises up. I crouch down grabbing both of my daggers one in left hand, one in right hand. Suddenly the stranger throws off his cloak. He's revealed himself to be the wolf King himself

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled -1)

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

Dotti drops into a low crouch on the cramped stone, both daggers in hand, the blades catching a thin wash of cold light. The chamber answers with a guttural scrape, and a vast shape heaves up from the dark ahead.

The Stranger snaps his cloak wide and lets it fall away. Beneath it stands not a guide, but a wolf-eyed monarch in dark finery, his posture suddenly hard as iron.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

At last, you see me clearly.

The words land like a verdict. Behind Dotti, stone grinds louder, and the rear seal finishes locking into place with a final, heavy thud.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

That is no stranger.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Keep your weapons up, little thief. I would hate for you to mistake this chamber for an exit.

Dotti’s blades are set, but the air itself seems to press inward now, cold and watchful. Somewhere in the walls, the tower’s pulse quickens, as if it recognizes its master.

We prepared to fight whatever has risen against us. The wolf King pushing me behind him me eagerly awaiting to fight the unknown danger

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +3)

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

The Wolf King shifts his weight, and the chamber seems to bow with him. Dotti squares her stance in the cold spill of light, daggers ready, as the dark behind him stirs.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Good. Stand like that. Whatever comes up from below will learn your shape first.

A deep shiver rolls through the stone underfoot. Dust drifts from the ceiling, and the shadowed opening beyond Theodore widens with a slow grind.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

That scent again. Old magic, and something that has not chosen a face yet.

Dotti does not break her guard. The twin blades hold steady while the chamber’s cold breath slips between them.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Stay behind me, if you value your hands.

He turns just enough to make room, half shielding Dotti as the darkness ahead bunches and moves, forcing the next decision into the open.

The Wolf King changes shape and meets the creature in mid-air. It seems to be one of his rivals. Another wolf seeking to kill me in the process to gain my secrets. Also, the Wolf King defends me and I dart in with my twin deckers at the underbelly of the animal

SUCCESS (Legendary Thievery, rolled +1)

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

The opening convulses wider, and a pale wolf of living shadow bursts through it. Theodore springs into its path, one hand flashing up to catch the jaws before they reach Dotti.

Dotti darts under the snarling tangle, her twin daggers slipping low as the creature lifts. Steel finds the soft underbelly, and the beast jerks with a sharp, choking yelp.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Good. Keep moving. It wanted your throat, not mine.

Black fur peels back like smoke in the draft. The thing twists in Theodore's grip, blood darkening the stone below its ribs.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Rival hound. It scent-tracks secrets. That is why it came for you.

The tower answers with a hard groan. The widening gap beyond the wolf shows not an escape, but a narrow ascent, stairs cut steep into deeper dark.

The wounded creature drags itself toward that new climb, and Theodore turns with it, leaving Dotti a clear instant, and a choice at the throat of the passage.

I step in and/the wolf's throat slowly exhaling in relief the wolf King. Cheers and we move forward through the passage

SUCCESS (Legendary Thievery, rolled -2)

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

Dotti slips in close and drives a blade up beneath the shadow-wolf’s jaw. The thing goes still, its smoke-fur breaking apart in the draft, and its weight slumps from Theodore’s grip.

A thin rush of air spills from the stair ahead, carrying cold stone and the scent of old dust. The passage is open now, and the path upward belongs to them.

Theodore straightens, one hand bloodied from the struggle, while the last scraps of shadow drain into the floor.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

That ends it. Move, before the tower finds another throat to send.

Dotti starts forward, but the dead wolf’s black ichor smears across her sleeve as she passes, cold and sticky against her skin.

Above them, the stair groans once, as if something deeper inside the tower has noticed the kill.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Up. Now. I do not like that sound.

Dotti Nightshade leaves hidden stair behind and arrives at upper levels of the tower.

I head up the stair with Theodore

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

The stair spits them out into the upper levels, a cramped gallery of leaning beams and soot-dark stone. Cold air crawls through cracked mortar, and the tower’s pulse hums under Dotti’s boots.

Dotti reaches the landing first, moving fast and light, with Theodore just behind her. The open stair yawns at their backs while the corridor ahead narrows toward a sliver of pale light.

On the wall beside the landing, fresh scrape marks cut through old dust, as if something heavy was dragged here recently. The Watchman’s hesitation at the threshold seems to linger in the air like a bad omen.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Keep low. Someone has used this level before us.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The fresh marks are newer than the dust around them.

A thin draft slips from the pale slit ahead, carrying the scent of wet stone and something iron-tang sharp. The passage is open, but whatever made those marks is still close enough to matter.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Dotti, choose fast. Light ahead, or dark to the left.

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

Dotti slips into the pale-lit passage without a sound, and the tower fails to notice her. The narrow way bends off the landing, swallowing her and Theodore’s shadows as the stair behind them fades from reach.

Above, the upper landing sits empty for a breath, the scrape marks and the half-open stair left behind like a mouth that has already missed its chance. The pale draft thickens ahead, tugging at loose dust and the hem of Dotti’s cloak.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Good. Keep moving, and keep to the wall.

The corridor widens by a handspan, then breaks into a colder crossway. One branch climbs toward brighter stone, while the other falls into a dark, square chamber with no visible floor past the threshold.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

The light does not come from a torch.

On the far side of the split, a slit of daylight or spellglow opens over the stone, and the floor there is scuffed as if something recently passed through in haste. The chamber to the left gives back only a dead, flat silence.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

There. We choose now, or the tower chooses for us.

✓ Quest Accepted

Find a way out of the tower

We can smell fresh air coming from the tower so we move towards that direction but in the distance there's a scaly being. It is one of the dragon folk that is who is there ahead of us

SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +0)

The Tower's Hidden Path
Wolf King Theodore
Wolf King Theodore

Dotti follows the fresher air through the brighter branch, silent as falling ash. The draft sharpens into the clean bite of night outside, but the corridor also opens sightlines, and she catches movement ahead, a scaled silhouette paused near the gap.

The figure is no watcher of the tower. It stands half-turned in the spill of pale light, all ridged shoulder and long neck, scanning the passage with wary stillness. Theodore slows behind Dotti, his hand hovering near the wall, not speaking.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

Fresh air. And someone is already there.

Dotti slips closer under the broken stone lip, and the shape resolves into a dragonfolk scout, armed and alert, but not yet looking their way. Beyond it, the opening to the air lies real, a route out cut into the tower’s upper skin.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Hold. Do not give away our shadow.

The scout shifts, nostrils flaring as if it has smelled the draft, and the bright opening beyond it turns into a reachable exit instead of a rumor. Theodore’s posture tightens, while the tower behind them groans once, low and impatient.
