The flooded stair spills Dotti into a broad chamber beneath the old thieves’ exchange. Black water circles a raised stone throne, draining through channels carved with seven seals.

Celeste stands before a thief-mask door, beside a prepared witness dais of dark slate. Her gaze fixes on the split mark copied into Dotti’s palm.

Celeste

Celeste

Nightshade. You followed my summons, brought the Wolf King, and carried the Writkeeper’s hidden flaw straight to my door.

At the chamber entrance, Theodore remains half-shadowed beside the Veiled Figure. Neither crosses the threshold; both watch Celeste and the water’s slow, deliberate movement.

Wolf King Theodore

Wolf King Theodore

Celeste, Regent beneath the Crown. Explain why Magnus’s chain still bears your seal.

Celeste

Celeste

Because the chain is not mine to break without a witness. The throne remembers authority, even when its servants deny the debt.

The thief-mask door opens a finger’s width. Beneath the throne, the black water reverses its flow, and the witness dais awakens with a dull silver glow.

“I step onto the witness dais and challenge Celeste”

Dotti steps onto the dark slate dais and raises her marked palm toward Celeste. The silver glow surges beneath her boots, testing the witness who approaches.

Dotti Nightshade

Dotti Nightshade

I challenge your claim over my family’s oath.

The dais answers with a harsh crack of light. Instead of opening its testimony, it rejects Dotti’s challenge and casts her back to the dais’s edge.

Celeste

Celeste

You challenge the chain, but not yet its authority. The witness stone recognizes your grievance, not your standing.

Black water climbs through the carved channels, stopping just short of Dotti’s boots. Beneath the slate, a concealed seventh seal briefly shows a broken crown.

Veiled Figure

Veiled Figure

There is your opening. The dais will not hear a challenge while Celeste’s regency remains unexamined, but the seventh seal can be questioned.

Then question that seal, Dotti. Make the throne’s authority answer before Celeste asks the water to close around us.

What authority does this broken seventh seal recognize?

Dotti directs the question toward the broken crown beneath the slate. The black water stills, and silver light gathers in the fracture.

The seventh seal opens without sound. Inside its broken crown appears a second mark, older than Celeste’s regency: the seal of the Crown’s First Witness.

Celeste

Celeste

The First Witness. That office predates the Regent and judges whether delegated authority remains lawful.

Words rise through the dais, etched in pale fire: NO REGENT MAY HOLD A BLOODLINE OATH WITHOUT THE WITNESS’S RENEWAL. Celeste’s seal fractures across the inscription.

Veiled Figure

Veiled Figure

There is the standing you needed. The broken seal recognizes an authority above the regency, and your question has invoked its review.

Wolf King Theodore

Then Celeste’s claim is conditional. She must answer before the First Witness, not merely before this chamber.

✓ Quest Accepted

Make Celeste submit to the First Witness’s review

“I point to the broken seal and make Celeste state her lawful standing.”

Dotti points to the broken seventh seal. Silver fire follows her finger across the slate, and the First Witness’s mark brightens beneath Celeste’s fractured regency seal.

Celeste

Celeste

My lawful standing is conditional. I hold the Regent’s authority by succession, but I may not command the Nightshade bloodline oath without renewal from the First Witness.

The black water sinks from the channels, exposing the full inscription. Celeste’s seal remains visible, but its claim no longer reaches across the broken crown.

Celeste

Celeste

Magnus acted under my office, yet his command exceeded what that office permitted. I inherited the chain, not the right to keep it unexamined.

Veiled Figure

The standing is spoken and recorded. The First Witness has forced the Regent to distinguish lawful delegation from inherited possession.

Wolf King Theodore

Then the oath is answerable here. Celeste, will you submit your seal for renewal, or release the Nightshade line from your authority?

The witness dais opens a narrow channel toward Celeste, carrying the question through silver-lit stone. Her thief-mask door swings wider, revealing a second chamber beyond.

Celeste, submit your seal to the First Witness for review.

Dotti’s demand crosses the silver-lit channel. The First Witness’s mark seizes Celeste’s fractured regency seal, drawing it from her palm as black water drains completely from the chamber.

Celeste

Celeste

I submit the seal. Let the First Witness judge whether my authority may lawfully hold the Nightshade oath.

The seal settles into the dais and opens like a dark flower. Silver script pours through its fractures, recording Celeste’s submission and separating her office from the bloodline’s bondage.

The cost lands at once: the black mark on Dotti’s palm flares, and the split thief-mask burns visibly through her glove, announcing her as the witness who invoked review.

Veiled Figure

Veiled Figure

The review is active. Celeste cannot command the oath while judgment stands, and the First Witness now recognizes Dotti’s challenge as lawful.

Celeste

Celeste

Then hear the full record. I inherited the seal, but the Nightshade line was never lawfully renewed under my regency.
