By the second night, the road narrows into a rocky hollow. Cero’s campfire crackles low, and a figure in ragged, oversized clothes sits just beyond it, shoulders tight and breathing rough.
He steps closer. The woman jolts, one hand flying to the hilt at her side, eyes sharp in the firelight.

Sable
Easy. I am not asking for trouble.
Her grip loosens by a fraction, but she keeps her body angled away, guarding the hollow like she expects the dark to answer back.

Sable
You are the only soul on this road tonight?
The wind stirs dust through the firelight. Cero stands before her small camp, the road behind him empty, the night ahead still and wide.

Learn who the stranger is
“Observe her form, take notes of her body build, muscles, eye color etc.”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +3)
Cero studies her in the firelight. She is lean, long-limbed, and travel-hardened, with ropey strength in her forearms and the set of someone used to sleeping light. Her hair hangs in rough strands around a narrow face, and one bright eye catches the flame while the other stays hidden in shadow.
The detail that slips free is stranger than the rest, there is a thin line of pale scales along her wrist, half-lost under her sleeve, and her fingers flex with a restless, almost animal precision.

Cero
Her left eye is a pale gold.

Sable
You look at me like you are counting exits.
She shifts her stance, no longer square to him but not turning away either, as if his scrutiny has become a test she chooses to answer.

Sable
If you mean to stay, do it honestly. I keep my camp because things in this hollow do not stay still.
Behind her, the fire spits a sudden blue spark into the dark, and something just beyond the camp rustles once, then goes quiet.

“I calmly apologize and decide to ask her if she's perhaps a lycan/werewolf”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Cero lowers his chin in a small, careful apology, keeping his hands open so she can see they are empty.

Cero
Sorry. I am not trying to pry, I just wondered if you might be a lycan, or something like one.
The woman goes very still. The blue spark dies in the fire, and her grip tightens on the knife by her thigh.

Sable
That is a dangerous question to ask a woman alone at night.

Sable
He says it plainly enough. Either he is foolish, or he means no harm.
After a long breath, she loosens her stance and lets the knife point dip toward the stones.

Sable
If you want the truth, stay by the fire and listen. If you want fear, leave now.
The hollow settles around them, quiet except for the soft crackle of the campfire.
“I sit down complimenting her, saying I don't fear werewolves, they aren't all monsters like stories say”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Cero eases down beside the fire, careful and unhurried, and lets his shoulders loose as if the night itself might hear him. He keeps his voice light, almost teasing, to make room for honesty.

Cero
I do not fear werewolves. Stories always make monsters out of what they do not understand.

Sable
He sits. He does not reach for steel. That is something.

Sable
Then you have better sense than most. Or worse luck.
She studies him across the steady flame, then sets the knife flat on her knee instead of in her hand. The hard line in her posture loosens by a fraction.

Sable
I am called The Stranger because I have not stayed long enough anywhere to earn a kinder name.

Sable
If you want the truth, I will give it. Sit there, and listen.
“Is there a full moon behind the clouds tonight”
NO (Even, rolled 75)
Cero glances upward, but the sky remains a thick, featureless shroud of charcoal clouds. There is no moon to be found behind the heavy veil of the night.
“Does she appear friendly”
NO (Likely, rolled 74)
The Stranger pulls her cloak tighter, her eyes narrowing into cold, unyielding slits as she stares past Cero. She offers no warmth in her gaze, her expression hardening into a mask of sharp, defensive hostility.
“I sit and listen calmly telling her I much rather be friends than goes, and even flirt a little”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Cero settles by the fire without crowding her space, shoulders loose, hands open on his knees. The tension in the hollow eases a fraction as he speaks plainly, choosing friendliness over the edge of the road.

Cero
I would rather be friends than enemies. And, well, you are hard to ignore.

Sable
Her stare flicks to him, then away. A faint, reluctant curve touches her mouth. "You are bold, traveler. Foolish, maybe, but bold."
She lets the cloak loosen at last, one hand resting near her knee instead of her knife. The firelight catches the pale, scaled patch at her wrist as she turns it toward him instead of hiding it.

Sable
"If you want a name, I am Sable. If you want the truth, I am not what the road expects."

Cero
So she finally gives him a name.

Sable
Her gaze stays on his face, guarded but steadier now. "Stay a little longer, Cero. Ask what you will, and I will answer honestly."

Attribute Upgrade: Willpower Great→Superb
“Sure I'll hang around, do you mind if I ask something personal, it's about your lycanthropy”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Cero leans in just enough to be heard over the fire and asks about the lycanthropy, careful not to crowd her. The question lands cleanly, and Sable does not flinch away from it.

Sable
"It is not a tale I tell lightly," she says, eyes lowered to the flames. "But yes, it is true. The blood in me is changed."
She rolls her wrist once, showing the scaled patch as if it is proof enough. Her jaw tightens, then eases, like the answer costs her but not enough to silence her.

Sable
"Some nights I keep my own shape. Some nights the beast pushes close, and I must choose what I will do before the choice is stolen from me."

Cero
So the danger is real, and she knows it well.
The fire pops softly between them. Sable does not reach for her knife, but she does not hide her hand either. That small stillness feels like an invitation.

Sable
"If you stay, stay honestly. Ask what you need, Cero."

“Does she normally retain control during her transformations”
NO, BUT (Unlikely, rolled 41)
Sable shakes her head slowly, the firelight casting long shadows across her features as she admits the truth. She explains that while she fights to hold onto her humanity, the beast often overwhelms her will entirely.
“Ask if she's ever retained control”
NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 70)

Sable
I have never once held the reins when the moon is full, Cero. Every time the change takes me, I wake up hours later with no memory of what I have done.
“Would you be interested in traveling with me? Perhaps we can cure or control your lycanthropy”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled -1)

The fire pops softly as Cero lets the silence breathe between them. Sable’s shoulders loosen a fraction, and the hard line in her mouth gives way to something more uncertain.

Cero
If you want company, I can travel with you. We can look for a cure, or a way to keep it controlled.

Sable
You would offer that after hearing what I am?
She studies him in the wavering light, then slowly lowers her hands from her cloak. The scale patch at her wrist catches the fireglow like wet stone.

Sable
I do not know what help I deserve. But I am tired of walking alone.
Cero’s offer settles between them, and the tension at the edge of the camp eases. Sable shifts closer to the fire, not touching him, but no longer bracing herself to flee.

Sable
If you stay, I will tell you the whole truth, and you may decide for yourself what kind of road this becomes.
