The Guardian's Judgment

The Guardian’s massive, bark-hewn limb lowers, not to strike, but to slowly sift through the layer of golden, sap-like embers at its feet. The forest hums with a resonant, mournful frequency that vibrates in Goat’s very teeth.

Guardian of the Grove

The creature’s appetite is a blight, yet its offering smells of ancient earth and apology. Perhaps my reach has grown too long, and my canopy too cold.

You offer ash to one who breathes in starlight, little beast. Do you seek to feed the rot, or mend the wound you have carved into my skin?

Goat

Goat

I just want to stop being a walking disaster. Maybe if I stand very still, it will forget I ate its leaf.

Hilda

Hilda

He is waiting for a sign. Do not move, Goat.

Snag

Snag

Gods be praised, the giant is listening! Don't let him turn us into mulch, oh great horned one!

Muscles locked. Hooves pressed deep into the golden dust. I am a statue. I am a mountain. I am absolutely, terrifyingly still. If I twitch, I am breakfast.

The Guardian’s massive, ancient gaze sweeps down, the light within its eyes dimming like embers buried in ash. The air grows heavy, pressing against Goat's ribs with the weight of a thousand winters.

Guardian of the Grove

You possess the stillness of stone, little one, yet your pulse thunders like a war drum against my roots. Why does the earth beneath you tremble so?

Snag

Snag

He’s praying! He’s praying to the grove itself! Don't you dare move, Goat, or we're all rot-fodder!

Hilda

Hilda

The beast is holding its breath. If the Guardian finds his silence lacking, we are lost.

The Guardian’s limb begins to tremble, a shower of crystalline leaves dislodging from the canopy above, raining down in sharp, silent slivers of light. One lands inches from Goat's nose, humming with a dissonant, jagged energy.

... Stillness, focus on stillness

My hooves bite into the soft soil. Every fiber of my body turns to iron. I am not a beast. I am the very bedrock of this grove. My breath is slow, deliberate, a rhythmic ghost against the suffocating silence.

Guardian of the Grove

Your resistance is curious, little goat. You do not cower, yet you do not flee. You stand as if you bear the sky upon your own spine.

Snag

He’s going to do it! He’s going to scream! Get down, everyone!

Hilda

Hilda

No. Look. He is not preparing to cry out. He is... listening.

The crystalline slivers hanging in the air vibrate, caught in the wake of Goat’s absolute, unnatural composure. The Guardian leans lower, the towering mass of its bark-skin torso groaning with the sound of grinding tectonic plates. A singular, glowing crack in the Guardian’s chest—the wound Goat caused—begins to pulse with a blinding, rhythmic gold light, reacting to the stillness radiating from the goat.

Whoa, that's good right? *The goat thinks*

The golden light feels like a warm sun upon my hide. It does not burn. It feels like the earth itself is reaching out to settle the rift I tore into existence.

Your stillness contains the weight of a mountain. You offer no apology, yet you offer your very presence as a bridge across the void.

The light. It is wrapping around him like a shroud of summer harvest. He is not just standing there, he is mending it.

The jagged crack in the Guardian chest begins to knit together, the golden sap-light flowing backward into the bark rather than spilling out. The crystalline slivers around Goat shatter into harmless dust, falling like snow onto the forest floor.

Hilda

Hilda

A creature of such raw destruction, yet it possesses a soul capable of such profound atonement. Perhaps the legends of the goat god were not entirely madness.

The wound mends, little one. But there is a hunger beneath your calm, a roar caught behind your teeth that the world has not yet heard. What is it that you truly seek?
