Goat steps through the root-gate first, and the silver tunnel swallows him whole. The others follow into a hidden passage of living light, where the air tastes sharp with ozone and wet stone. Behind them, the grove dims to a green glow.
The tunnel opens into a moonlit hollow beneath the canopy. Pale roots arch overhead like ribs, and a shallow pool mirrors a sky that is not there. Goat lands on springy moss at the center of the ring of light.

Goat
By the old stones... we made it through.

Hilda
This place is watching us. Stay close.
Guardian
Threshold-walker. You have crossed, and the way has answered.
The silver grass from the far side of the gate now lies flattened in the hollow like a bright trail. Goat stands at its center as the light thickens around his horns, and the tunnel behind him begins to close in a soft braid of roots.
“*He looks into the water, then walks around the pool to look outside, also though unrelated, he starts getting the urge to climb, he does like climbing and it's been a minute*”
SUCCESS (Legendary climbing, rolled -2)

Goat circles the pool, then springs up the nearest root wall with sudden ease. Moss gives under his hooves, and the pale roots hold him like a ladder carved by moonlight.
From above the basin, he peers out through the lattice of branches. The hollow falls away beneath him, and the closed trail behind the gate looks thin as a scar.
The roots are strong here.
A ripple passes through the mirror-pool below, answering his weight on the living wood. The glow along his horns steadies, then turns toward the branch above the far side of the hollow.

Guardian of the Grove
Yes. You feel the seam before you see it. You climb where the world may turn.

Elowen
He is looking beyond the pool, not just at it. To the outside, and the inside at once.

Hilda
That is what you meant by threshold-walker.

Guardian of the Grove
Climb higher, Goat. Show us where the path opens next.
“*He does so, after a moment of just... Watching, as if he had chosen to observe rather than act but then remembered he needed to climb, to see what is up top presumably*”
SUCCESS (Legendary climbing, rolled -1)

Goat pauses only long enough to watch the seam in the roots, then he climbs. His hooves find hidden holds, and the living wood gives under him like a breath held and released.
He hauls himself higher, shoulders brushing moonlit bark. The branch above bends, then steadies, as if testing the weight of what is coming.
Below him, the mirror-pool shivers harder, and the braid of roots at the gate tightens another notch. The hollow seems to narrow its attention around Goat.

Guardian of the Grove
Yes. There. You find it by climbing past the edge of one world into the next.

Elowen
He is not only looking up. He is finding where the place changes.

Hilda
Then show us, Goat. What waits on the higher branch?
“*He moves through it, not just through space as it appears on the surface, it's something you feel, to put words to it would cheapen it*”
FAILURE (Legendary climbing, rolled -3)
Goat commits to the seam, not the bark, and the branch refuses him. His hooves skid on living wood, then catch on nothing at all, as if the climb briefly forgets it is solid.
He slips half a body-length and lands hard on a lower bend of root. The mirrored water below snaps bright with his jolt, and the gate behind tightens another braid.

Guardian of the Grove
Careful. The higher branch is not a rung. It is a crossing.

Elowen
He feels the change before he sees it. The wood is resisting the wrong part of him.

Hilda
Then it is choosing him, or rejecting him. Goat, do not force it blind.
The branch above flexes once, almost like a question. Goat hangs in the gap between holds, with the path forward narrowed to a place he can feel but not yet reach.
“*He moves through it, not just through space as it appears on the surface, it's something you feel, to put words to it would cheapen it*”
FAILURE (Fair Arcane Resonance, rolled +0)
Goat tries to slip through the seam, not the wood. The root under his hooves goes slick as glass, then strangely deep, like the hollow is folding away from him.
He pushes anyway. The space answers wrong. His chest meets no bark, then all at once the branch snaps back into being and shoves him off line.
Goat drops onto the lower root bend again, but the seam has shifted. What felt open is now a hard knot of living grain, and the route above no longer lines up.

Guardian of the Grove
No, little threshold. Not by force. You must meet it where it turns.

Elowen
It is closing around his shape. Do you see it? The path remembers him, then refuses to hold him.

Hilda
Then the next step is not up. Goat, choose the turning, or the gate will knit shut without you.
Below them, the mirror-pool flashes silver across Goat's flank. The braided roots tighten another finger's width, leaving one dim seam trembling at the edge of sight.
“Oh. *He watches, as it shifts, is it a timing thing? He tilts his head*”
SUCCESS (Terrible Perception, rolled +4)
Goat tilts his head and stops pushing. The trembling seam answers at once, not to strength, but to stillness.
The narrow line beside the mirror-pool brightens when he watches the root braid. It opens only on the beat between tightenings, a breath-long gap.
Goat catches it. When the roots pull inward, the seam loosens. When they settle, it locks.

Guardian of the Grove
Yes. You do not break the turning, you arrive with it.

Elowen
He sees the pause in the flow. That is the crossing.

Hilda
Then wait for the roots to breathe, and move on the release.
The mirror-pool flashes again, and Goat has the rhythm now, though the seam flickers shut in the same instant.

“...”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +1)

Goat waits. The roots tighten, then loosen on the next breath of the hollow.
He steps into the slack seam as it opens, shoulders brushing living bark, and the line takes him without resistance.
The mirror-pool flares silver beneath him. For one heartbeat, Goat is reflected twice, on both sides of the crossing.

Guardian of the Grove
That is it. You do not force the threshold, you answer it.

Elowen
He is reading the pause itself.

Hilda
Then the seam opens for him because he knows when to move.
The opening closes behind Goat with a soft knot of roots, and the hollow holds its breath, waiting for his next choice.
“*Gently step to the left? Yeah, to the left*”
FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled +0)

Goat tries to step left, but the seam does not widen for him. The living roots lean with his weight and slide under his hoof.
He skids sideways instead of crossing cleanly, brushing the braid as the mirror-pool flashes hard silver beside him.
The knot behind him tightens. The opening he meant to take is no longer square, only a narrow, tilting slit.

Guardian of the Grove
Not against it. With it. The threshold will not be bullied.

Elowen
The seam shifted when he fought it. It is reading him back.

Hilda
Then he cannot just choose a side and force it.
Goat steadies himself on the root edge. The hollow breathes once, and the slit turns thinner, waiting on his next move.
“*He stomps once, not out of rebellion but to just.. Get it out of his system, he retained the right to complain afteralll.. a moment, he takes a deep breath, letting go and... yadda yadda*”
FAILURE (Superb Willpower, rolled -2)

Goat stamps once on the root, a small, stubborn thud. The seam answers by narrowing instead of opening.
He draws in a breath and tries to settle. The hollow catches it, then lets it out wrong, like a pulse slipping its rhythm.
The mirror-pool flashes silver across his chest. The roots do not move for anger or effort, only for timing.
Goat’s shoulders loosen a fraction, but the seam stays tight, almost testing him.

Guardian of the Grove
You are not failing the crossing. You are hearing it badly.

Elowen
He keeps trying to make the world answer first. Perhaps he needs to let it lead.

Hilda
Or he needs one clean beat, not a fight with the floor beneath him.
The hollow grows quiet around them, waiting. The slit of root remains closed, but no one moves to rush him.
“*He takes a breath*”
SUCCESS (Superb Willpower, rolled +0)

Goat draws in a deeper breath, and the hollow answers at last. The seam loosens on the inhale, the roots around him easing into the same quiet measure.
He holds the rhythm in his chest, not forcing it, only matching it. The mirror-pool brightens once, then steadies, as if recognizing the breath as a key.

Guardian of the Grove
There. You do not command the threshold, Goat. You become its timing.

Elowen
So that is the name of it. Not a road, a listening place.

Hilda
And he does it by taking one clean breath instead of wrestling the whole hollow.

Guardian of the Grove
A threshold-walker hears the moment a world may be crossed, then steps where it opens.
Goat’s breath lands true, but the effort leaves him faintly lightheaded. A thin dusting of root-pollen slips from his muzzle as the seam settles into a calmer pulse.
