The Prisoner

If I can get my hands lower, maybe the rope slackens.

He twists at the wrists, edging one bound step toward the broken gap in the stone, the rope at his neck pulling tight as he tests it.

The Mercenary Captain

The Mercenary Captain

You there, stop him. Tell me who put him in chains.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

A dramatic arrangement, captain. The man is a thief, and the alchemist is the liar.

While their voices snap across the courtyard, Grunion spots the spilled pinch of reactive powder glittering by his boot, half-blown into a crack between the flags.

Grunion

Grunion

The powder is still usable.

Grunion shifts toward the spill, close enough to snatch it or turn back to the prisoner. The captain’s attention is split, and the wizard’s hand hovers near his sleeve, too guarded to miss for long.

Secure the prisoner's exit

I move to cut the prisoner's ropes while the captain distracts the wizard.

Grunion slides in under the quarrel, hand going for the prisoner’s rope. The captain’s command pulls the wizard’s gaze away for a heartbeat, but the knot snags tighter than expected, biting into the hemp instead of loosening it.

The prisoner jerks as the line shifts, and the gap in the stone steals his balance sideways. His shoulders drop, but not free, and the rope holds him in place above the opening.

The Mercenary Captain

The Mercenary Captain

Hold. Nobody moves until I know who is lying.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

How efficient. Even the alchemist’s hands betray him.

The failed cut leaves Grunion’s fingers on frayed cord, not slack. A bit of the wizard’s reactive powder skitters near the break in the flagstones, disturbed by the scuffle.

The prisoner hangs in the same dangerous half-step, not escaped, not secure, with the captain now watching the line and Grunion’s hand alike.

I grab the rope and pull him clear

Grunion hauls once more, and the rope drags only an inch before the knot bites back. The prisoner stumbles clear of the crack by a handspan, but the line stays cruelly tight, jerking him into a bent, trapped stance.

The pull wrenches Grunion off balance. His alchemy kit skids at his side, and one clasp pops open, spilling the pouch just enough to show his tools still inside, but no longer secure.

The Mercenary Captain

The Mercenary Captain

Enough. Wizard, explain the rope, now.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

You see? He interferes, and the prisoner still clings to the stones like a drowned rat.

Near the broken gap, the scattered reactive powder trembles and skitters with the vibration, edging toward the stone seam.

The prisoner twists his shoulders toward Grunion instead of the opening, as if the safer path is suddenly the harder one to reach.

The dropped clasp leaves Grunion one breath away from either reclaiming his gear or letting the kit slide farther into the quarrel.

I wrench the kit back into my grip

SUCCESS (Mediocre Agility, rolled +1)

Grunion yanks the kit hard against his side, and the strap bites back into his palm. The popped clasp snaps shut under the pull, catching the spill before it can slide away.

The wizard sees the motion from across the courtyard, his attention snagging on the kit instead of the rope. The argument tilts for a breath.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

His tools are back in hand.

The prisoner keeps his twisted footing, still bound and forced away from the seam, while the reactive powder lies trembling but contained beside the crack.

The Mercenary Captain

The Mercenary Captain

Wizard. Either explain that rope, or I start deciding for you.

Grunion has the kit, but the captain’s demand lands like a blade between them. The wizard’s stare sharpens, waiting to see whether the next move is speech, steel, or spell.
