The keep yard falls strangely quiet beneath a gray sky. Ranks of villagers stand shoulder to shoulder, all eyes fixed on the scaffold, where a robed prisoner waits with a rope at his throat.

Grunion pushes through the press of bodies and stops cold. The prisoner wears the same alchemist’s cut of robe, the same travel stains, even the same familiar pouch straps.

On the platform, the hedge wizard turns. His gaze finds Grunion at once, and his thin smile sharpens.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

There you are. I was hoping the bait would catch something rarer than a rat.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

This hanging is a curtain, Master Alchemist. Behind it waits the keep’s vault, and the key I wanted was you.

A heavy crash echoes behind Grunion. The portcullis drops with a final clang, sealing the gate.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Hand over your rarest reagents, and your rival lives. Refuse, and I begin with the man in your robes.

The rope creaks overhead. The wizard keeps smiling, waiting for Grunion to answer.

Grunion’s hand slips into his satchel as the crowd holds its breath.

His fingers close around a slim vial of volatile salts, cold glass clicking softly against leather.

He draws it free, and the pale granules inside catch the gray light like frost.

On the scaffold, the hedge wizard’s smile thins when he notices the movement.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Careful, alchemist. One wrong trade, and the prisoner dies for nothing.

The rope above the prisoner creaks once, and every eye in the yard snaps toward Grunion’s hand.

Grunion keeps the vial level, arm steady despite the tension in the courtyard. The pale salts glimmer in his grip.

Grunion

Grunion

Release the prisoner. Now.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

You bargain boldly for a man with a sealed gate at his back.

Still, the wizard’s hand lifts from the scaffold rail. The rope slackens a little, and the prisoner’s shoulders drop with it.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner

Grunion... do not hand him everything. I am still here.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Then listen carefully, alchemist. I want reagents, not rubble. Put one vial down, and I cut nothing today.

The prisoner turns his bound wrists as far as the rope allows, meeting Grunion’s gaze with raw, urgent trust.

Is the hedge wizard bluffing about sparing him?

NO (Unlikely, rolled 80)

The wizard's eyes narrow, his grip on the rope tightening again as he sneers at the prisoner's plea. He has no intention of letting the man go, regardless of what Grunion offers.

I threaten to shatter the vial

Grunion tilts the vial just enough for the salts to catch the light. The clear glass creaks in his grip, and the hedge wizard’s swagger falters.

Grunion

Grunion

One drop would be enough.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Careful, alchemist. Break that, and your bargain dies with your nerve.

The prisoner goes still on the scaffold, rope biting at his throat, eyes fixed on Grunion’s hand.

The wizard loosens his own reach from the rope at last, but only to snatch a pouch from his belt and shake it open toward the ground.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Your tools for his life. Put them down, or I let him fall.

A few brittle clinks hit the stone between them, one of Grunion’s own reagents spilled from the pouch. The air sharpens with the smell of bitter herbs.

Grunion lowers the vial a fraction, but the hedge wizard only tightens his stance and keeps the prisoner dangling between them. The words hit stone, not will.

Grunion

Grunion

Release him.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

No. Your hands are still full, alchemist.

The wizard yanks the rope short in a sharp, warning pull. The prisoner stumbles on the scaffold and goes rigid, breath caught, while the spilled reagents glitter untouched below.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner

Grunion, do not trade for me.

The threat hardens the courtyard. Grunion’s own tools stay in his grasp, but the wizard has made the choice plain, there will be no easy bargain.

I snatch the spilled reagents

Grunion darts low, hand flashing toward the scattered reagents.

The stones bite back with slick powder, and the handful skids through his fingers.

A pale burst puffs up from the spill, hissing against the air between him and the scaffold.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Careful. Those were mine first.

The wizard jerks the rope tight at the same instant, and the prisoner chokes hard, forced upright by the strain.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner

Grunion, stop. He will use it.

The spill now lies dusted with the wizard's powder, ruined and dangerous to touch, while the pouch at his belt hangs one twitch away from another pull.

I threaten the wizard with my vial

Grunion lifts the vial higher, and the hedge wizard stills at once. The threat lands cleanly across the courtyard.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Careful now. One shake, and you lose your leverage.

The wizard eases the rope a fingerwidth, then stops, eyes fixed on the glass in Grunion's hand.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner

Do it, Grunion. Do not let him take your kit.

For a breath, the scaffold and the ruined spill hang in a tense triangle, each man waiting on the other to blink.

Above them, the rope slackens just enough to let the prisoner sag free of the worst pull, but the wizard keeps his grip and his demand, ready to choose between reagents and revenge.

Grunion’s pressure lands, and the hedge wizard’s grip loosens all at once. The rope drops from a threat to a plain tether.

The Hedge Wizard

The Hedge Wizard

Enough. Take him, then. But you will pay for it.

He jerks the knot free and shoves the prisoner down from the scaffold edge, backing away with his hands open and empty.

The Prisoner

The Prisoner

Grunion... my hands.

The prisoner lands hard but upright beside the foot of the steps, still bound, yet no longer hanging under the wizard’s control.

Around them, the courtyard feels suddenly larger, the wizard and the prisoner separated by a full stride of open stone.

The wizard watches Grunion’s kit instead of the captive now, waiting to see whether the alchemist keeps the reins or reaches for his tools.
