The library swallows the hallway chill in warm mahogany and dust. Toni steps in behind Vincenzo and Vicky, the copied ledger pages already spread across the long reading table.

Vicky points to a column of dates, then to a set of deposits that land too cleanly between Tommy's usual transfers. Vincenzo leans over her shoulder, jaw tight, but he does not crowd Toni this time.

Luca sets down a second folder, the office copy of Tommy's accounts. A page is already flagged with a red tab, and the same number pattern appears in the margin, mirrored.

Vicky snaps her fingers and turns the page toward Toni, the red tab pinned beside a delivery name and a shortened business label. The initials do not match anyone at the table.

Toni drags her fingertip along the routing note, slow enough to catch the pressure of the pen. The letters are copied fast, but the rhythm is not Tommy’s, it is a familiar hand trying to look official.

The line breaks in the same place as one of Luca’s filing marks, and the note suddenly clicks into a wider pattern, a family file turned into a disguise.

Vicky’s face tightens as she sees where Toni is staring. Vincenzo stops mid-breath, waiting for the name before the accusation lands.

Luca’s eyes harden at the table, not at Toni, but at the implication. The routing note is no longer just a clue, it is a fingerprint from someone the family would recognize in their own files.

Toni slides the note beside Luca’s office ledger and measures the line breaks against his neat, clipped marks. For a second, the shapes seem to line up, but the spacing slips apart on the second row.

Her finger pauses on a correction smear, the kind a copier makes when they are rushing. The note does not confirm Luca’s mark, it only borrows its shape.

Vincenzo’s jaw tightens, then eases as he sees the mismatch. He does not push the accusation further, but he also does not let it go.

The page stays between them, suddenly less like proof and more like a map with one road missing. Everyone is looking at Toni, waiting for which copy to compare next.

The question lands cleanly, but the cost shows in the room. Vicky’s face goes pale at having her habit named, and Luca immediately pulls one folder free to mark it for copying, losing time and making the paper trail noisier.

Vincenzo keeps his mouth shut, watching Toni for the next move while the evidence shifts from handwriting to access.

Vicky swallows hard, but she does not back away from the page. Luca slides the marked folder into a neat pile and reaches for the sign-out sheets instead.

Vicky drags a hand through her hair and lets out a shaky breath, more relieved by the question than offended by it. Luca does not look up from the sign-out sheets, but his fingers stop at a line and hold there. Vincenzo shifts his weight, still quiet, still unwilling to pile on without proof.

Toni runs the sign-outs against the copied routing marks, and the mismatch stops being abstract. The same hands keep surfacing in both places, but not in the same order, as if someone mirrors office habits without ever matching the real workflow.

Luca’s finger shifts down one column, then another, and the page gives up a clean discrepancy. One set of initials is too neat, entered at the wrong time to belong to the person named beside it.

Vicky leans closer, her shoulders tightening as she recognizes the spacing before anyone says the name out loud. Vincenzo goes still, watching the line like it might bite if he points at it.

Luca marks the line with his pen and turns the sheet toward Toni, not asking for belief, only witness. The discrepancy now points inward, toward one sibling’s access trail and the choice that follows it.

Toni slides her finger through the sign-out times, and the column answers back. The gaps are not random, they cluster around the hours Vicky is away from her desk.

Luca shifts one sheet aside and lets Toni compare the overlaps with the office log. Two entries land cleanly inside Vicky’s absence, and one name keeps repeating in the margins.

Vincenzo’s jaw tightens, but he does not move to argue. Luca taps the repeated name once, then turns the page so Toni can see the pattern line up.

The room goes still around the mark. The evidence now names a window, a witness, and a suspect, and Toni has to decide whether to press the office trail or take that name back to the family.
