The basement door bangs open and Vincenzo Capozzi fills the frame, broad as a fridge, face set in a hard glare. Joey, Mickey, Nikki, and Don all go still.

He steps in one pace, scanning the circle of chairs, the cheap coffee, the too-careful smiles. His attention lands on Toni, then on the others.

Vincenzo’s jaw shifts. He does not look convinced, but he also does not move to close the distance.

That lands. Vincenzo’s gaze narrows, less at Toni than at the room around her, like he is weighing whether the story hangs together.

Toni stays quiet, and Nikki catches the opening before anyone else can. She shifts her weight, squares her shoulders, and takes the lie into her own hands.

Mickey snorts despite himself. Joey does not relax, but he does stop bracing like a shield. Vincenzo’s eyes flick between them, reading the rhythm of the room instead of hunting for a crack.

For a beat, Don lets the silence sit. Then he gives the smallest nod, not absolution, but approval enough to keep the family line intact. The pressure eases, and the room chooses Toni's side without saying her name.

Toni keeps her gaze down. The room stays quiet long enough for the request to settle instead of bounce.

Joey steps aside first, then Mickey follows, both making a clear lane to the stairs.

The approval lands, but Toni’s shoe scrapes the concrete on her first step, sharp enough to pull every eye back to her for a second. The path to the stairs is open.

Toni keeps her head down and moves. The scrape of her shoe is the only loud thing in the basement as she steps past the cleared lane and onto the first stair.

Nobody stops her. Joey’s arm drops, Mickey shifts back, and the whole room lets the moment pass without comment.

The reminder hangs there as Toni climbs, still not looking back. The family’s attention follows her upward, but the basement stays quiet behind her.

By the top step, she is out of the basement and into the hall. Her leg brushes the banister, a small sting that keeps her from moving too fast.

Toni keeps moving, but the hallway floor catches her bad step. Her shoulder clips the wall trim, and she has to steady herself with a quick, ugly breath.

The stumble breaks the clean exit. Down the stairwell, the family goes still for one beat, all eyes tracking the noise instead of her retreat.

Don’s voice cuts the moment off before anyone can turn it into a joke. Toni is already beyond the stairwell now, but not smoothly, not unnoticed.

She reaches the hall by force of momentum, one hand pressing the sore spot at her side as she finds her balance.

Toni straightens off the wall and keeps going, slower now, but steady. Her shoes whisper over the runner as she takes the stairs past the landing and leaves the basement voices behind.

A loose thread on her sleeve catches under her fingertips, then rips free as she brushes past the banister. The small snag costs her, but she does not stop.

Below, the stairwell empties out of her frame. The family stays where they are, their attention held at the bottom while Toni reaches the upper hall.

She turns into the corridor that leads to her room, one hand still at her side, breathing through the ache from the stumble.

His voice follows her, not loud enough to stop her, just sharp enough to remind her the lie still has to hold behind her.

At the end of the hall, Toni reaches her door and gets there with her shoulder still tight and her sleeve nicked, but her path is clear. Somewhere below, Vincenzo is still watching for a crack.
