The violet light remains dormant beneath the cracked floor. Xavier studies Arias’s right eye, now blackened, while a gentle smile rests upon Arias’s face.

For one unguarded instant, Xavier’s composure slips. A faint warmth touches his pale cheeks before he straightens, schooling his features into princely formality.

Xavier

Xavier

The bond may transmit pain between us. If one of us loses control, the other may feel that darkness as though it were his own.

His crimson gaze lingers on Arias’s blackened eye, then falls to their joined hands. He does not withdraw, though his fingers tighten slightly.

Xavier

Xavier

It may also carry grief, fear, or the buried entity’s influence. That thing could press through our connection and make one of us a doorway.

Xavier

Xavier

Yet I find myself less troubled by the bond than by how easily you make me forget to guard myself. Tell me honestly, Arias. What is changing in you?

✓ Quest Accepted

Protect Xavier from the entity’s incursion

“Is the buried entity already influencing me?”

NO, AND WORSE (Unlikely, rolled 88)

Xavier

The violet cracks remain dark beneath the floor, and the bond offers no answering pressure from the buried entity. Arias is not being influenced.

Xavier

Xavier

No. It has not entered you, Arias.

Xavier’s relief lasts less than a breath. Their joined hands suddenly chill, and a second pulse travels through the bond from somewhere beyond either body.

Xavier

Xavier

And worse. It has found another path. It is reaching through me.

A thin violet sigil appears beneath Xavier’s palm, winding across his skin like an ancient script. His crimson eyes flare, then briefly reflect a depth that is not his own.

Xavier

Xavier

It cannot command me yet. But it has learned that Arias will protect me.

Xavier

Xavier

The bond has not made you its doorway. It has made me the threshold, and your concern for me is the key it intends to turn.

Director's notewhole tale

Arias's tone was a lot more colder and serious, it scared Xavier a little bit as well when he noticed both my eyes briefly flashed red both going back to blue and black.

“if it tries anything it'll be dead in a second.”

If it tries anything, it will be dead in a second.

Arias’s voice falls cold and absolute. Both eyes flash red for an instant before settling into blue and black, and the violet sigil beneath Xavier’s palm fractures.

Xavier

Xavier

Arias, do not strike through the bond. It is waiting for precisely that.

The threat crosses the connection as force rather than sound. The buried presence recoils, but the sigil opens across Xavier’s hand, drawing the intended violence into its ancient lines.

Xavier

Xavier

You have wounded its hold, but not destroyed it. The attack has taught the seal how your power answers my protection.

Xavier’s fingers lock around Arias’s. The violet script closes into a ring, binding the entity’s path to Xavier’s living pulse and leaving direct force dangerous to them both.

Xavier

Xavier

It cannot reach outward now without passing through me. If you kill it by force, Arias, you may tear me open with it.

Then the danger is greater than pain. If the entity learns your anger, it may turn every attempt to protect me into a weapon against us.

Arias’s red flare fades, but the black and blue of his eyes remain severe. Xavier’s grip tightens around his hand, betraying a brief, genuine fear.

Arias

Arias

What danger does this bond pose to us?

Arias folds his power inward rather than striking. Space contracts around the violet ring, drawing its crawling script away from Xavier’s pulse and back toward the sealed floor.

Xavier

Xavier

It could consume the distinction between us. My wounds, my instincts, even my will might become channels through which it reaches you.

The sigil shudders beneath Xavier’s palm. Violet light streams backward in thin threads, leaving his skin unmarked as the ancient presence is forced beneath the stones.

Xavier

Xavier

You drew it back without harming me. Arias, that restraint may be the only thing keeping our bond from becoming its doorway.

“how about we just leave the ruins, the exit is right there”

How about we leave the ruins? The exit is right there.

Arias rises, keeping Xavier’s hand enclosed in his own. The violet ring remains sealed beneath the stones as they turn toward the broken archway.

Xavier

Xavier

A sensible proposal. I had not expected practicality from the hunter who threatened to destroy the entire foundation.

Xavier follows without resistance, his stride still guarded but steady. Behind them, the ancient castle settles into silence, its dormant light fading beneath layers of dust.

Xavier

Xavier

Do not mistake our departure for safety, Arias. The bond remains, and whatever sleeps below now knows precisely whom I would follow.

They cross the threshold into cold evening air. Ruined towers frame the darkening sky, while the pressure around Xavier’s palm loosens to a faint, watchful warmth.

Xavier

Xavier

Still, I would rather face its next attempt beneath the open sky, beside you, than remain its threshold in that grave.

Beyond the broken arch, the evening wind sweeps over the hills. The warmth around Xavier’s palm abruptly vanishes, and his shoulders draw tight beneath his crimson-lined armor.

Xavier

Xavier

The entity has withdrawn, but the connection remains painfully cold. Do not mistake this for weakness, Arias. I require your presence.

Xavier steps closer until their joined hands rest between them. His pale fingers curl around Arias’s, seeking the steady heat of divine magic without disturbing the sealed bond.

Xavier

Xavier

He frightens me when that darkness answers his anger. Yet his restraint is the only shelter I trust.

A faint violet thread trembles beneath Xavier’s skin, then dims as Arias’s inward pressure holds it at the boundary. No pain crosses between them, only a guarded warmth.

Xavier

Xavier

It may still use my body as a threshold, but you have denied it passage. If we remain together, we must learn exactly where protection ends and possession begins.

Xavier leans nearer beneath the darkening sky, composed only by degrees. Behind them, the ruins settle, and the buried presence offers no further answer.

Arias

What danger does this bond pose to us?

Arias’s tone is colder than the evening wind. Both eyes flash red for a breath before settling into blue and black, and Xavier’s composure falters.

Xavier

Xavier

It could make my body a passage for the entity, until my pain, instincts, and will become instruments against you. If it reaches your power through me, protection itself may become possession.

The violet thread beneath Xavier’s skin stirs. Arias folds space inward and draws the entity’s influence away from Xavier’s pulse, guiding it back toward the distant seal without tearing the bond.

Xavier

Xavier

You are frightening when your darkness answers your anger. Yet you are also the only barrier between me and that thing. I do not know which truth unsettles me more.

Cold overtakes Xavier’s fingers. He moves into Arias’s warmth, and Arias gathers him into a close embrace, holding him firmly while the last violet tremor fades beneath the ruins.

Xavier

Xavier

He holds me as though releasing me is no longer acceptable. I should object, but the warmth makes the ancient dark feel farther away.

The last violet tremor retreats beneath the ruins. In the open air, Xavier remains within Arias’s embrace, his guarded posture gradually loosening against the divine warmth.

Xavier

Xavier

Your control is extraordinary. You drew it away without touching my will, and without turning your power against me.

Xavier’s fingers settle against Arias’s back, careful at first, then firmer. The cold leaves his hand, replaced by a steady warmth that the bond carries between them.

Xavier

Xavier

He is holding me too closely to pretend this is merely protection. I should demand distance, yet I cannot make myself step away.

Arias’s tail moves behind him in a slow, unmistakably pleased wag. Xavier notices, and a faint blush rises across his pale cheeks as Arias’s severe face softens.

Xavier

Xavier

You are wagging your tail, Arias. How unexpectedly revealing for someone so determined to appear invulnerable.

For a quiet moment, neither moves. The darkening hills hold only wind and distant bells, while the bond rests peacefully between them, without violet pressure or pain.

Director's note

Arias becomes really sweet and does not deny being invulnerable, but the mention of his tail wag makes him blush as well, and makes his tail wag harder

What danger does this bond pose to us?

Arias’s tone is colder and more serious than before. Both eyes flash red for a breath before returning to blue and black, and Xavier stiffens within the embrace.

Cold returns to Xavier’s fingers, and he presses closer. Arias holds him firmly, almost clingingly, warmth settling around them as his tail wags harder. Xavier blushes, and Arias does too.

Xavier

Xavier

You are still wagging your tail, Arias. So much for appearing entirely invulnerable.

Director's note

are they gonna kiss? is that what is about to happen, cause goddamn is there a lot of tension

Xavier’s teasing falters when Arias’s expression softens instead of hardening. The warmth surrounding them steadies, and the last chill withdraws from Xavier’s fingers.

Arias keeps Xavier close, one arm firm around his back. His tail wags harder behind him, betraying a sweetness his solemn face can no longer conceal.

Xavier

Xavier

You do not deny being invulnerable. You merely blush when your tail reveals that you are pleased.

Color deepens across both their faces. Xavier’s crimson eyes lift to Arias’s blue and black gaze, and neither seems willing to be the first to look away.

Xavier

Xavier

Arias, if you intend to frighten me and comfort me in the same breath, you should at least warn me before doing both.

The bond rests peacefully between them, carrying only warmth. Xavier’s hands settle against Arias’s chest, leaving a narrow breath of air between their faces beneath the evening sky.

Xavier

Xavier

If he comes closer, I may forget entirely why we were ever enemies.
