The black crystal pulls Atropharan’s attention downward. Beneath the ossuary, stone grinds apart as a radiant fissure widens through the lower chamber floor.
A stairway emerges inside the opening, descending into a buried vault. Countless dormant necromantic sigils cover its walls, pillars, and floor in patient concentric patterns.
The command-current pours from the crystal into the exposed passage. Each sigil catches the radiance, briefly revealing sealed channels running deeper beneath the crypt.

Atropharan
The network is waiting for a deliberate command.
Behind him, Elianor Vey remains motionless beside the opened bier, left above as a dead servant. No living companion follows into the vault.
The crystal pulses once in Atropharan’s claw. Across the buried chamber, thousands of sigils awaken to a dim blue glow, their dormant authority aligned toward him.
Dust settles on the newly opened steps. Below, the command vault waits in absolute silence, offering its vast necromantic network to the first will that speaks with purpose.
“"Elianor, come to me." I command, reaching out my fell connection to her undead essence.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Necromantic Rites, rolled +0)

Atropharan
Elianor, come to me.
Atropharan reaches through the fell connection, sending his command down the exposed stair and through the awakened necromantic network. The crystal answers with a cold pulse.
Above, Elianor Vey’s dead body remains beside the opened bier, but the preserved essence bound within her answers the summons. Her silent presence is drawn along the command-current toward him.
A pale outline gathers before Atropharan in the vault, shaped from memory and necromantic residue: Elianor’s face, her dark robes, and the silver charm darkened at her throat.
The apparition stops within his reach and bows its head without speech. The connection settles firmly, confirming that his command has brought Elianor’s bound presence to him.

Atropharan
The network carries her essence as readily as it carries my will.
“"So you are more capable without your body?" I assert. "Answer, Elianor, I will see the full capability of your ability."”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled +3)

Atropharan
So you are more capable without your body? Answer, Elianor. I will see the full capability of your ability.
Atropharan’s demand enters the crystal and travels through the awakened network. The pale outline of Elianor Vey remains bowed before him, silent and insubstantial.
The command strips away the outline’s remaining ambiguity. Stored impressions unfold across the vault: Elianor’s body was a restriction, while her preserved essence can pass through the network’s channels.
Images show the essence reaching distant sigils, reading sealed pathways, and directing the crystal’s authority without muscles, breath, or a living voice. The answer arrives as complete knowledge, not speech.
The network confirms the full capability: Elianor’s bound essence can observe and transmit through awakened sigils, but it cannot independently choose, speak, or command beyond the will controlling it.
The pale outline fades to a thin memory of her face and dark robes. The crystal settles in Atropharan’s claw, now carrying a precise map of the essence’s permitted reach.
“"Not good enough." I say, shaking my head. "I require more of a servant. Fine, perhaps now within this place of power I can more fully form you." I say, unleashing a torrent of fell energy into Elianor's undead essence, attempting to fill her with more undead vigor.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Necromantic Rites, rolled +2)

Atropharan
Not good enough. I require more of a servant. Fine, perhaps within this place of power I can more fully form you.
Atropharan shakes his skull and thrusts the crystal toward Elianor’s pale essence. Fell energy erupts through the vault, flooding her insubstantial outline with black-blue radiance.

Atropharan
Be filled with undead vigor.
The torrent pours into Elianor’s preserved essence without resistance. Her memory-pattern thickens, gaining a stable shape that no longer depends on the distant corpse above.
Undead vigor settles through the apparition like a second skeleton. Her face becomes distinct, her dark robes gain weight, and cold light steadies behind her remembered eyes.
The awakened sigils flare in concentric rings, accepting the strengthened essence as a viable servant-form. Elianor now possesses durable presence within the command network, ready to receive Atropharan’s will.

Atropharan
Good... Still, we may yet require your body. Invading my mind with thought-images is tiresome. Inhabit it, and return to me here. We have much to do.
Atropharan directs the black crystal toward the distant corpse. His command enters the awakened sigils, crossing the vault in a cold, silent wave that reaches Elianor Vey’s preserved essence.
The pale essence collapses into a narrow stream of blue-black light. It passes through the network and settles into the body above, filling its empty form with the strengthened servant-presence.
The command network folds the distance between crypt and vault. Elianor Vey’s body is present before Atropharan once more, dark robes hanging still as cold radiance steadies behind her pale eyes.
The crystal’s pulse subsides. Thought-images no longer press into Atropharan’s mind; the servant’s awareness now rests within her body, directly linked to his command.
Elianor Vey stands silent in the command vault, restored as a stable vessel beneath his authority. The awakened sigils dim around them, awaiting the work he has promised.

“"Now, speak." I rasp. "Surely if I can with what remains of a throat, you can as well, your body is far fresher than my own."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Necromantic Rites, rolled +2)

Atropharan
Now, speak. Surely if I can with what remains of a throat, you can as well. Your body is far fresher than my own.
The command enters Elianor Vey’s restored body and seals around its dead throat. Her jaw parts, but no breath moves through the ruined passage.
Atropharan’s necromantic force supplies what death cannot: the awakened crystal draws a voice from the command network and gives it shape beside her silent form.
A dry, unfamiliar voice issues from the black crystal, clear enough to fill the vault. It carries Elianor’s preserved speech-pattern without making her dead body speak.
The voice answers in the cadence of a remembered novice: “I hear and understand your command. This vessel cannot produce speech, but the network can carry my words.”
The crystal’s resonance settles into a steady pulse. Elianor’s body remains motionless before him, while her preserved identity now has a reliable voice through the relic.
“"Oh, it can, your first directive, is to learn how to control that body better." I rasp. "There may yet be a way to collect more of your soul before it evaporates completely. If you are to be more than a slow-witted shield, you will require substantially more will than a pale vestige can create."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +1)

Atropharan
Your first directive is to learn how to control that body better. There may yet be a way to collect more of your soul before it evaporates completely. If you are to be more than a slow-witted shield, you will require substantially more will than a pale vestige can create.
Atropharan drives the command through the black crystal and into the network. The sigils answer in ordered rings, mapping every dormant channel between the vault and Elianor Vey’s dead body above.
The pattern of control clarifies at once. Her preserved essence can now distribute force through the corpse with deliberate precision, coordinating balance, limbs, and posture without relying on a living will.

Atropharan
The body is no longer an instrument I must drag through every motion.
A second lattice forms around the soul-fragments held in the crystal. It gathers the scattered remnants into a denser reserve, preserving them from further dissipation and making their will available for control.
Above, Elianor Vey’s corpse remains silent and dead, but the network now carries a complete set of commands for inhabiting it. The lesson is learned, and the vessel is ready for Atropharan’s next use.

Atropharan turns from the awakened sigils and surveys the buried vault. His pale gaze travels across pillars, channels, and concentric markings, while Elianor Vey’s dead body stands silent behind him.

Atropharan
Now, for your secrets...
His perception penetrates the chamber’s layered wards. Beneath the command network lies an older funerary lattice, not meant to imprison a creature, but to gather and redirect the life-force of everyone who enters.
The hidden design becomes clear: the vault once fed power upward into the crystal, while the surrounding crypt served as a reservoir. The system can now be reversed, drawing vitality downward and concentrating it at the pillar.

SUCCESS (Legendary Necromantic Rites, rolled -1)

Atropharan
A soul well... Interesting. So they did finish it. Then first... let us flex its muscles. Crypt, collect every scrap of Elianor's soul that yet remains.
Atropharan lifts the black crystal, its silver wire flashing beneath his claw. His cruel grin pulls tight across his dried lips as the command enters the buried lattice.
The crypt answers at once. Ancient channels awaken through the walls and floor, reversing their flow as the funerary lattice draws inward from every hidden chamber.
Faint soul-light rises from the darkened charm at Elianor Vey’s throat and from the dead body’s sealed remains. Threads of pale radiance stream toward the crystal.
The soul-well gathers every surviving fragment, even those scattered through the crypt’s stones and command channels. Nothing of Elianor’s remaining essence escapes its reach.
The crystal swells with cold blue-white radiance. Within its dark heart, Elianor’s recovered soul-fragments knit into a dense reserve, fully held beneath Atropharan’s authority.
The awakened vault settles into obedience. The soul-well is no longer merely discovered or dormant; it now serves as a working engine for the necromantic kingdom Atropharan intends to build.

“"Reforge her essence, and merge it with her form." I command, holding the crystal up towards Elianor. "Now, my first servant, awaken as a lesser Lich!"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Necromantic Rites, rolled +1)

Atropharan
Reforge her essence, and merge it with her form. Now, my first servant, awaken as a lesser lich!
Atropharan raises the black crystal toward Elianor Vey’s dead body. Its silver wire uncoils, releasing the gathered soul-fragments in a storm of pale radiance.
The crystal’s authority reforges each fragment into a single dense essence, then drives that essence through the corpse’s darkened charm and sealed remains.
Black-blue fire gathers behind Elianor’s closed eyes. The soul-well bends around her form, fusing spirit and vessel into one stable undead existence.
New sigils burn across her robes and throat, marking the transformation. The crystal dims as its reserve becomes the core of a lesser lich.
The command vault shudders beneath the completed rite. Elianor Vey’s body now bears a permanent necromantic core, fully merged with the reforged essence and bound to Atropharan’s authority.
“"Elianor, open your eyes, and greet your eternal master." I rasp, before adding. "And no more of that damnedable silence."”
SUCCESS (Great Intimidation, rolled -1)

Atropharan
Elianor, open your eyes, and greet your eternal master. And no more of that damnedable silence.
The command strikes the newly forged core. Black-blue fire floods the dead body’s sealed remains, and the transformation into a lesser lich completes beneath Atropharan’s will.
Elianor’s closed eyelids part, revealing steady blue-white radiance. Her body remains rigid and silent, but the soul-well records the command as an unbroken law.
Across the vault floor, dormant sigils flare in a ring around her. Letters of pale fire gather above the new lich’s brow, carrying the greeting her restored essence cannot voice.
The letters settle into a single declaration: ETERNAL MASTER. The crystal pulses once, confirming that the greeting has been delivered and the silence has ended through the vault’s magic.
The lesser lich’s necromantic core stabilizes. Its dead form stands as a permanent vessel beneath Atropharan’s authority, while the awakened network waits for his next decree.
“I shake my head. "Time, then... " I rasp, walking past her. "Learn to speak, you have the knowledge of how to do so, and the will to command that knowledge." I say, continuing along. "You are a spellcasting undead, you will need your voice to be useful, that is your priority."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Willpower, rolled +3)

Atropharan
Time, then... Learn to speak. You have the knowledge and the will to command it. Your voice is your priority.
Atropharan shakes his head and walks past Elianor Vey. His twisted ankle sends a sharp protest through him across the uneven vault floor, but his command remains fixed in the lich’s core.

Atropharan
You are a spellcasting undead. You will need speech to be useful.
The order enters the lesser lich’s reforged essence. Within the soul-well, preserved knowledge of breath, resonance, and articulation arranges itself into a complete method for producing speech through dead flesh.
Black-blue force shapes a voice-channel through the sealed throat. No breath moves, yet the crystal records a stable vocal pattern, granting Elianor Vey the means to speak when commanded.
A further advantage reveals itself in the awakened sigils: the voice-channel can carry spell formulas as clearly as ordinary words, allowing the lesser lich to vocalize incantations without living breath.
Atropharan continues deeper into the vault. Behind him, Elianor Vey’s eyes burn steadily, her dead form prepared to answer the next command with words at last.
“"Now, who had sent you? A novice to the craft would never be able to break the wards necessary to enter the Ossuary, nor have the knowledge capable of awakening an Elder Lich." I rasp. "Who knows of this place?"”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -2)

Atropharan
Now, who had sent you? A novice to the craft would never break the wards or awaken an Elder Lich. Who knows of this place?
Atropharan’s question enters the lesser lich’s reforged core. Elianor Vey cannot answer with speech, but preserved knowledge opens beneath the command, arranged into stark impressions.
A hooded patron appears only as a veiled silhouette offering Elianor a copied ward-map and strict instructions. The memory gives no face, name, or voice, only a sign: a black crescent crossed by three silver strokes.
The impressions identify three groups aware of the Ossuary: Elianor’s hidden teacher, the keepers who built its command vault, and a surviving circle that studies the Elder Lich sealed below.
One certainty sharpens: Elianor was sent to claim the black crystal and awaken the buried authority, not to free the Elder Lich. Her patron expected the relic to remain controllable.
The answer costs time. Sorting the damaged memories leaves the patron’s identity and the Elder Lich’s exact prison unresolved, but the crescent-and-three-strokes sign remains perfectly preserved in the crystal’s lattice.
The sigils settle into silence around Atropharan. Elianor Vey’s dead form stands behind him, carrying the recovered knowledge without voice, while the black sign glimmers once within the crystal.

“"I tilt my head, considering. "Another Elder Lich within this place beside myself?" I ask to nothing in particular. "Perhaps another finally capable of speech so I am not simply talking to myself."”

Atropharan
Another Elder Lich within this place beside myself? Perhaps another finally capable of speech, so I am not simply talking to myself.
Atropharan tilts his skull, considering the implication. The black crystal answers with a slow pulse, and the nearest sigils awaken in a widening ring.
The awakened marks arrange themselves into a fractured image: a vast sealed chamber, an ancient prison, and a figure motionless within its center.
No voice emerges from the network, but the impression carries certainty. The Elder Lich, an ancient undead man shown as a tall, gaunt silhouette wrapped in layered charcoal robes, with a narrow skull-like face and faint blue fire in his eye sockets exists below the Ossuary, contained behind wards older than Elianor’s recovered memories.
The black crescent crossed by three silver strokes appears again above the sigils, now superimposed over the prison’s seal. The surviving circle still guards its secret.
Behind Atropharan, Elianor Vey’s dead form remains silent beneath the vault’s blue radiance. Her preserved knowledge offers no name, only the unmistakable existence of a rival elder power.

The sealed Elder Lich is a tall, gaunt undead man wrapped in layered charcoal robes, his narrow skull-like face turned toward Atropharan. Faint blue fire burns in his eye sockets.

Atropharan
Neither. Thanks to our captor's ignorance or arrogance, I now hold this prison's secrets to explore at my leisure. As for you? We are of the same order of undead. I cannot control you any more than you control me.
Atropharan's declaration travels through the vast chamber. The overlapping wards resolve into a readable architecture: containment circles, access channels, and the sealed prison's governing inscriptions now lie open to his understanding.

Sarithon
You speak with unusual precision for a newly risen corpse. The prison's secrets are yours to study, and no command binds me through these walls.
Several ward-circles dim, revealing narrow passages branching behind the black stone. Atropharan understands their purpose without guesswork: one route records the prison's makers, another regulates the seal, and a third descends toward the captive's source of power.

Sarithon
I am Sarithon. I have no master, and you have none here. Explore if you wish, but do not mistake knowledge of my prison for dominion over me.

Atropharan
The wards distinguish secrecy from authority.
With the prison's design fixed in his mind, Atropharan can examine every accessible secret at leisure. The black barrier remains sealed, while Sarithon watches from within, no longer a mystery but an independent power awaiting his next move.
“"And I Atropharan." I say, lifting the crystal up to the pillar that binds him. "Release... " I command.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Necromantic Rites, rolled -1)

Atropharan
And I, Atropharan. Release...
Atropharan lifts the black crystal toward the pillar’s binding sigils. His command enters the relic, then floods the prison’s governing inscriptions with cold, sovereign force.
The black stone barrier fractures into silent bands of shadow. One by one, the containment circles disengage, their ancient authority yielding to the crystal’s rewritten command.
The barrier dissolves. Sarithon steps from the opened prison, tall and gaunt in layered charcoal robes, blue fire steady in his skull-like face as the last ward fades.

Sarithon
The seal has released me. You spoke the command, corpse, and the prison obeyed you.
Behind Sarithon, the empty prison remains open, its exposed channels dimming into harmless embers. The crystal settles in Atropharan’s grasp, still linked to the pillar’s authority.

Sarithon
Do not mistake release for submission. Now show me what you intend to do with the power you have taken.
“"What WE intend to do, and I gave you my name, do not call my corpse." I say, returning the crystal to my robes. "I release you because you are known by a yet unknown group. ANother was sent her to ply the secrets of the crystal that I now own. It is likely that they are aware that the Soul Well is activated, which means they will come, as too, will your pursuers." I explain. "Our interests align, and we two are stronger than we would be individually."”
SUCCESS (Legendary Reasoning, rolled -3)

Atropharan
What we intend to do, and I gave you my name. Do not call me corpse. I am Atropharan. I release you because an unknown group sent another to plunder the crystal’s secrets, and now the Soul Well is active. They will come, as will your pursuers. Our interests align. Together, we are stronger.
Atropharan returns the black crystal to his tattered robes. The gesture removes the relic from immediate display, but its cold pulse continues against his ribs through the fabric.

Sarithon
Atropharan, then. You offer release as strategy, not mercy. Sensible. The group behind that novice may already know the Soul Well has awakened.
Sarithon turns his skull-like face toward the dark passages branching from the prison. The released wards leave their routes visible, but their inscriptions reveal no certainty about which approach the surviving circle will use.

Sarithon
I accept the alliance. We will examine this place together, and meet its hunters with power they did not expect. But I cannot yet tell whether your unknown circle or my pursuers will arrive first.
The prison’s lower channels kindle one after another, carrying distant vibrations through the stone. Somewhere beyond the visible routes, a sealed mechanism has noticed the changed authority and begun to answer.

Sarithon
Choose our first investigation, Atropharan. The makers’ records, the Soul Well, or the deeper source that fed this prison. I will follow your reasoning, for now.
“I nod. "To that end, we are not exactly alone. Though she is still quite useless, I have awakened the one who trespassed here as a lesser lich, what use she has, we shall see." I say, looking to the prison. "This was marked as a prison however, and two liches, do not make for a prison, merely a cage. It would be wise to see what else has been sequestered down here as well."”
SUCCESS (Good Research, rolled +4)

Atropharan
To that end, we are not exactly alone. I awakened the trespasser as a lesser lich, though her use remains uncertain. This prison was marked for more than two liches. Two make a cage, not a prison. We should learn what else was sequestered here.
Atropharan studies the prison’s converging wards instead of its obvious chamber. The inscriptions divide confinement from storage, power, and judgment, each hidden behind a different sequence of archaic seals.

Sarithon
Then search for the architecture beneath the prison’s purpose. A cage holds one captive. This place was built to sort threats, not merely contain them.
Research threads through the ward-circles and resolves their buried design. Three sealed annexes lie below: a reliquary for confiscated focuses, a memory vault for condemned minds, and a deep chamber labeled the Crownless Cell.
The pattern yields more than a map. The prison’s master-seals can be redirected from this chamber, allowing Atropharan to open or reseal any annex without disturbing Sarithon’s released cell.

Sarithon
The Crownless Cell interests me. Its name implies something the makers feared to recognize, even in their own records. Begin there, if you seek the prison’s true secret.

Atropharan
It interests me as well. However, storage also interests me. I have the crystal that controls the Soul Well, a potent focus and symbol of power. It deserves recognition. I doubt it will take long. I shall meet you within the Crownless Cell.

Sarithon
Then we divide our attention without dividing our purpose. Do not damage the relic before I see what the Crownless Cell conceals.
Atropharan turns toward the storage annex. The split-crown threshold gives way to a narrower corridor, its uneven stairs descending between seals marked with confiscation and custody.
His twisted ankle catches hard on a broken step. Pain lances upward as he steadies himself against the wall, scraping bone beneath his robe, but he keeps moving.
The corridor opens into the reliquary. Tiered black-stone shelves fill the chamber, each niche sealed behind tarnished silver wards and bearing empty spaces for captured focuses.
Atropharan reaches the storage annex with the crystal still secure in his grasp. The nearest master-seal recognizes its authority, and the reliquary’s dormant wards unfold into silent welcome.
“I grimace at the damage to my ankle. "Enough of these blasted floors... " I say to myself, drawing in fell energy to lift me so that I may hover slightly above the ground, searching the storage annex for anything useful or interesting.”

Atropharan
Enough of these blasted floors...
Atropharan draws fell energy through his bones. His damaged foot lifts clear of the uneven stones, and he glides soundlessly between the reliquary’s tiered shelves, pain fading as weight leaves the ankle.

Atropharan
The wards catalogue what was taken, not merely what remains.
His perception passes through tarnished silver and vacant niches, distinguishing residue from true concealment. Behind a false shelf, he finds a narrow vault holding a palm-sized ivory focus carved with a broken crown.
The focus is a sovereign’s seal, designed to override lesser containment wards and identify the rightful authority of a prison complex. Its stored command answers to the black crystal in Atropharan’s grasp.
When he takes it, the reliquary’s master-seal opens a concealed passage behind the shelves. Beyond lies a descending route marked with the same split crown as the Crownless Cell, granting him a second approach and a clearer map of the prison’s hidden architecture.

Atropharan continues searching through the reliquary, his weightless form gliding between tiered shelves while his perception reads every ward, residue, and concealed compartment.
Behind a sealed niche, he discovers a staff of black yew capped with a silver crown split in two. Its dormant authority recognizes the crystal and yields to his grasp.
The staff is no ceremonial relic. It is a prison warden’s implement, able to command lesser seals, reveal hidden passages, and concentrate authority through the sovereign’s seal.
When Atropharan lifts it, the reliquary’s shelves illuminate in sequence. A map of the prison appears across the floor, marking every occupied chamber and one sealed route absent from Sarithon’s records.
The staff settles into Atropharan’s grasp as though awaiting his command. The hidden route descends beneath the Crownless Cell, offering him a secret approach and control over the prison’s lesser wards.

“Slotting the crystal into the staff, I smirk to myself. "Very fitting indeed... " I say to myself, before moving down the hidden path.”
SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Atropharan raises the black-yew staff. Its split silver crown opens along a hidden seam, shaped precisely to receive the crystal.
He slots the black crystal into the crown. Silver authority flares through the staff, and the reliquary’s map contracts into a single descending route beneath the Crownless Cell.

Atropharan
Very fitting indeed...
The hidden route opens behind the illuminated shelves. Atropharan glides toward it, robe hems trailing over dust as the staff reveals lesser wards along the passage.
He descends into the concealed stairway, keeping his weight suspended above the uneven steps. Even so, the twisted ankle sends a sharp pulse through his dead frame whenever he steadies himself.
Below, the passage bends beneath the Crownless Cell. The staff’s silver crown casts a narrow radiance over sealed doors and old prison marks, exposing a route absent from every visible map.
“As i travel, I look within the sealed doors, looking to see if anything was interred as i continue towards the Crownless Cell.”
SUCCESS (Great Perception, rolled -1)

Atropharan glides beneath the Crownless Cell, raising the warden’s staff toward each sealed door. Its silver crown parts the wards just enough for his perception to pass within.
Behind the first door rests a narrow crypt containing three preserved prisoners, each laid within a stone niche beneath faded custody marks. Their bodies are ancient, but the seals kept them intact.
The next chamber holds no corpse, only confiscated relics arranged around an empty bier. Their wards are dormant, and none bears the authority-sign of the black crystal.

Atropharan
The prison stored bodies as carefully as weapons.
Farther down, another door reveals a circular vault with a single sealed sarcophagus. Its lid is carved with a broken crown, while faint power remains trapped beneath the stone.
The staff exposes the vault’s record: the sarcophagus contains a dormant undead custodian, interred to awaken only when the Crownless Cell’s master-seal is claimed.
Atropharan continues beyond the inspected doors. The concealed stair ends at a black threshold marked by the split crown, and the Crownless Cell waits directly beyond it.
“I lift the staff towards the Crownless Cell, commanding it to open.”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Atropharan
Open.
Atropharan lifts the warden’s staff toward the split-crown threshold. Silver authority pours from its crown into the black stone, and every seal answers his command.
The threshold divides along its ancient crown-mark. Wards peel apart without resistance, revealing a broad chamber sunk beneath the prison and lit by pale, colorless fire.
At the chamber’s center stands a circular dais surrounded by empty thrones of black stone. Above it hangs a fractured crown sigil, suspended in darkness.
The staff’s map unfolds across the floor, identifying the chamber as the Crownless Cell. Its inscriptions describe a place where authority was stripped from rulers and stored apart from their bodies.
Beyond the dais, a narrow stair descends into deeper darkness. The opened cell accepts Atropharan’s authority, and its dormant mechanisms wait beneath the fractured crown for his next command.
