Odran Vale

Flint reaches the cellar floor as the blue pulse below abruptly stops. Silence seals the chamber, unnaturally complete, while the opened stair hangs behind him and the villagers remain above with Mara.

A collapsed wine rack shifts in the darkness. From behind it steps an elderly man with a gaunt human face, iron-grey hair, and dust-caked pre-cataclysmic armor dulled nearly black. He carries no weapon.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

Keeper of the ward, stand where you are. The presence below is not yours to release.

The figure, lean and stooped, with a narrow scar crossing his left cheek raises both empty hands, palms outward. Fine dust falls from his shoulder plates, revealing faded marks of an age older than the village’s patched walls.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

My name is Odran Vale. An old pact protects what sleeps beneath this floor, and your village has already broken it.

Above, muted voices stir beyond the open stair. Mara does not descend, and the villagers hold their barricade; only the cellar’s cold, dry air separates Flint from the silent depth.

If the seal has recognized you, then the breach has chosen its witness. Ask what you must, Keeper, before the pact answers for them.

What lies beyond the cellar floor?

Flint’s keen senses trace the cold air through the stone, catching a vast hollow beneath the chamber and a slow, sleeping presence within it. His feared reputation works against him: Odran’s guarded stare makes every silence feel like a warning.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

A buried sanctum lies beyond it, older than this village and deeper than any cellar. The pact was made to imprison what sleeps there.

Odran lowers one hand toward the floor without touching it. Dust trembles in a faint circle, answering something far beneath the flagstones.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

Beyond the sanctum waits Vaelith, a name the old wardens spoke only in oaths. It is not a beast, nor a spirit, but a will bound into the roots of the world.

The name settles into Flint’s understanding with the weight of discovered fact. Beneath the cellar, the hidden depth is no longer an empty unknown: it holds a conscious prisoner, sealed below the village.

Odran Vale

If you descend, Keeper, you will find the pact’s heart. You will also find why the ward recognized your vow.

“Descend into cellar”

FAILURE (Fair Athletics, rolled -1)

Keeper of the Broken Pact
Odran Vale
Odran Vale

Flint descends toward the cellar’s deeper darkness, placing each armored foot with deliberate care. Undercroft Delver guides him along the old stone’s safest edges, where ordinary eyes would find only dust and shadow.

His full mithril armor protects his feet, head, and body when a concealed step drops beneath him. The heavy set turns a dangerous fall into a bruising slide against the cellar wall.

Flint catches the next handhold, but the descent stalls. His Feared Reputation presses Odran’s wary silence into his thoughts, while the Oath of Vengeance urges him toward the deeper dark instead of the safer stone.

The ledge beneath him cracks under his weight. Flint arrests his slide, yet the broken flagstone drops away, exposing a narrow shelf and an iron-bound door set sideways in the cellar wall.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

That door was sealed from the sanctum’s side. If it has opened now, the pact has offered you another way down.

Flint does not reach the sanctum by the stair, but the failed descent reveals a usable alternative: the sideways door, its old hinges exposed and its threshold leading beneath the cellar floor.

“Go through door”

SUCCESS (Good Agility, rolled +1)

Flint turns sideways through the iron-bound door. Undercroft Delver guides his boots across the narrow threshold, finding firm stone where dust disguises the safest path.

The door’s low frame catches his shoulders and scrapes across his full mithril armor, but the plates protect his body and head as he bends and passes beneath it.

His bruised side protests when he lands on the far shelf, yet the impact remains minor. The sideways door stands open behind him, and the passage lies beneath the cellar floor.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

You crossed before the pact could reconsider. That passage leads into the sanctum’s outer ring.

Odran’s guarded voice follows through the opening. Flint’s Feared Reputation makes the warning sound like suspicion, while his Oath of Vengeance pulls his attention toward the darkness ahead.

Flint Fireforge

The stone beneath the cellar is worked, not natural.

“Examine stone”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

Flint runs his gauntleted fingers and keen eyes along the passage stones without disturbing their settled dust. Undercroft Delver reveals a deliberate path: fitted blocks, squared joints, and a shallow drainage groove beneath the wall.

Flint Fireforge

Flint Fireforge

These stones were quarried, dressed, and set by wardens, not laid by nature.

His reasoning follows repeated chisel marks into a pattern older than the village, built as a circular outer ring around the buried sanctum. Full mithril armor lets him brace shoulder and helm against the low stone without injury.

The Oath of Vengeance keeps dragging his attention toward the darkness beyond the ring, while his Feared Reputation turns Odran’s silence behind him into an imagined warning. Flint forces his scrutiny back to the masonry.

The examination succeeds, but costs him time. Dust settles across his armor as he checks every joint, and one inner seam remains obscured until he can inspect it from farther along the passage.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

Then you have found the outer ring’s true shape. The old wardens built it to guide intruders inward, not to shelter them from what lies below.

The construction’s origin is clear: pre-cataclysmic warden work, joined stone by stone around Vaelith’s prison. The passage is an engineered descent, and its hidden geometry points deeper beneath the village.

“Follow the passage”

SUCCESS (Good Survival, rolled +1)

Keeper of the Broken Pact

Odran Vale

Flint follows the fitted passage deeper into the sanctum’s outer ring, testing each stone with his boots before shifting his weight. Undercroft Delver reveals the safest line through the circular descent.

Keen Senses catches a faint change in the air where the ring bends inward. Flint’s full mithril armor protects his head, feet, and body as the low ceiling forces him through a cramped turn.

Flint Fireforge

Flint Fireforge

The drainage groove slopes toward the sanctum’s heart.

His eager pace draws dust from the joints, and the bruise in his side tightens only when he twists beneath the stone. He steadies himself, refusing the Oath of Vengeance’s urge to rush.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

Keep to the groove, Keeper. It marks the wardens’ intended descent, and it will bring you to the outer ring’s inner threshold.

Behind him, Odran’s guarded silence feeds Flint’s Feared Reputation, making every pause feel watched. Flint ignores the suspicion and follows the groove until the passage opens into a broad circular gallery.

Carved pillars encircle a dark central shaft. Flint has followed the passage fully into the sanctum’s outer ring, where old warding script descends toward Vaelith’s buried prison.

“Examine script”

SUCCESS (Superb Reasoning, rolled +2)

Flint circles the gallery, examining the warding script from pillar to pillar. Keen Senses separates fresh blue residue from older cuts, while Undercroft Delver reveals how each line continues around the shaft.

His Superb reasoning follows the repeated symbols through dust and shadow. The fitted masonry gives him stable footing, and his full mithril armor shields his head and shoulders beneath the low, curving ceiling.

The script resolves into three linked commands: contain, witness, and answer. Their lines descend toward Vaelith, naming the buried will as the pact’s prisoner and its source of power.

Flint’s Feared Reputation distorts Odran’s distant silence into a warning, while the Oath of Vengeance urges him to read the marks as a challenge. He checks that impulse against the complete pattern.

Flint Fireforge

Flint Fireforge

The witness does not command the prisoner. It carries the pact’s answer back to the keeper.

The final signs become clear: the ward recognized Flint because his vow supplied a living witness, not because it named him master. The gallery’s script maps a safe approach to the sanctum’s heart.

Odran Vale

Odran Vale

You have read the outer ring correctly, Keeper. Now you know what the pact will demand before it lets you face Vaelith.
