A More Honest Kind of Coffee

A week later, Capan arrives at the quieter café near the park with Lena’s annotated copy of Pride and Prejudice held carefully against her side. Lena is already waiting at the corner table by the window.

Lena’s relieved smile appears the instant she sees Capan. She rises halfway, then settles back into her chair, leaving the opposite seat open beside a second steaming coffee.

Lena

Lena

Hi. I was starting to wonder whether the book had convinced you to avoid me, but I’m glad it came back with you.

She reaches toward the paperback without taking it yet, her fingers brushing the table’s edge instead. The small gesture makes the planned coffee feel more private than either of them named.

Lena

Lena

What did you notice this time? I want the honest answer, even if it’s only one scene or one line that stayed with you.

Lena

Lena

I wanted you to read it because Elizabeth keeps being told that directness is a flaw, when sometimes it is the only way she can stay truthful. That reminded me of you.

Lena

Lena

Not because I think you’re difficult. Because beneath the awkward questions, you keep trying to be honest with me. I wanted to see what you would recognize in her.

“I tell Lena what stayed with me”

SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +2)

Capan

Capan

What stayed with me was Elizabeth refusing to be agreeable just to make everyone else comfortable. She was direct because pretending would have been less honest.

Lena listens without interrupting. Her hand rests beside the paperback, and the guarded tension around her mouth gradually loosens.

Lena

Lena

Yes. That is exactly the part I hoped you would notice.

She draws the book closer but does not open it, keeping her attention on Capan instead. Morning light gathers softly across the table.

Lena

Lena

People treat directness like a problem when it makes them uncomfortable. But Elizabeth learns that honesty does not have to mean cruelty.

Lena

Lena

She understood the part I was afraid to explain. Maybe I can stop bracing for her to misunderstand me.

Lena

Lena

I like that you came back with an answer, not just the book. It makes this feel like the second coffee I was hoping for.

“I let Lena know I'm always misunderstood by everyone. I ask that she can be patient with me”

SUCCESS (Good Conversation, rolled +2)

Capan

Capan

I’m often misunderstood by everyone. I know I can be blunt, but I’m trying to be honest. Please be patient with me.

The request settles between them without the usual awkward rush. Lena’s fingers rest on the closed paperback, and she studies Capan with quiet attention rather than alarm.

Lena

Lena

I can be patient. I cannot promise I’ll understand everything immediately, but I can ask instead of assuming.

She turns the paperback once beneath her palm, then leaves it untouched. The café’s soft conversation continues around them, giving Lena’s answer room to feel deliberate.

Lena

Lena

And I need you to be patient with me too. When you’re direct, I may need a moment to hear what you mean instead of reacting to how it sounds.

Lena

Lena

She is asking for patience, not permission to hurt me. I can meet her there, if we both keep listening.

Lena

Lena

You do not have to become someone else for me, Capan. Just give me enough time to know the honesty underneath the awkwardness.

“I invite Lena for a walk after coffee”

Capan

Capan

Would you like to take a walk after coffee? We could go through the park, if you have time.

Lena’s hand stills on the paperback. The invitation is simple, but her expression changes as she glances toward the café window and then back to Capan.

Lena

Lena

I don’t think I can. I’m sorry. I should have said this before, but I have to meet Elise’s father after this.

She gathers the book and her coffee too quickly, knocking the spoon against the saucer. Her careful calm fractures into visible strain.

Lena

Lena

A walk sounds like a date after the coffee, Capan. I know we have been circling that possibility, but I’m not ready to make today more than this.

Lena

Lena

Please don’t persuade me or ask me to explain it into something easier. I need the rest of today without another plan between us.

Lena places the paperback between them instead of returning it to Capan, her fingers lingering on its cover. The second coffee ends with the invitation unanswered and the book withheld.

“"Should I stop contacting you? Is this the end or do you just need some space?"”

Capan

Should I stop contacting you? Is this the end, or do you just need some space?

Lena closes her fingers around the paperback. The question makes her pause, but not soften; her gaze stays fixed on the worn blue cover.

Lena

Lena

I don’t know how to answer that without making you wait for a certainty I don’t have.

Lena

Lena

If I say space, she may hear hope. If I say the end, I may be pretending I feel more finished than I do.

Lena

Lena

This is not a promise that we’ll try again. It is also not a clean ending. I need you not to contact me for now, and I need to be the one who decides whether that changes.

She slides the paperback across the table at last, returning it without the earlier invitation attached. Her expression remains strained, but her boundary is unmistakable.

Lena

Lena

Please take the book and let this morning be finished. If I want to speak again, I’ll contact you. If you don’t hear from me, please let that be your answer.

“I respect Lena’s boundary and leave quietly”

Capan takes the paperback from Lena without argument. She rises quietly, adjusts her bag, and leaves the café table undisturbed except for the cooling coffee.

The café door opens onto the park’s pale morning light. Behind her, spoons and low conversation resume, swallowing the small sound of her departure.

Lena

Lena

She listened. I asked for space, and she gave it to me.

Lena remains seated, one hand resting beside her untouched cup. Through the window, she watches Capan cross the pavement without calling after her.

Lena

Lena

Goodbye, Capan.

The words are too quiet to reach the street. Lena lowers her gaze to the blue book in Capan’s absence, while Capan continues away from the café and gives the boundary its full silence.
