Beau follows the fresh wolf tracks uphill, ration sack secured against her side and axe still in hand. No companion follows; the mountain keeps her alone.

The trail bends beneath wind-bent pines, their branches knitting a dark arch overhead. Beyond the next rise, the ridge from the oilskin sketch cuts the pale sky.

Beau

The tracks are fresh, but the pack has stopped.

Near a patch of bloodied snow, four wolves stand motionless. Their bodies face uphill, yet their yellow eyes keep flicking toward the distant shrine.

The shrine is little more than a black stone roof and a narrow bell tower on the ridge. No wind reaches its motionless bell rope.

The bell rings once. The sound rolls through the pines, deep and clear, while every wolf lowers its head and the blood-dark snow trembles beneath Beau’s boots.

For several breaths, nothing moves except loose snow slipping from the branches. Then the largest wolf steps toward the ridge, waiting as though something beyond the shrine has called it.

✓ Quest Accepted

Discover what is calling the wolves

“Beau stays low to the ground, her movements slow and measures as she tries to sneak around the gathered wolves and make it unnoticed to the shrine. She makes sure to travel downwind to avoid their sensitive noises.”

SUCCESS (Good Stealth, rolled +2)

The Bell Calls the Pack

Beau sinks beneath the pines’ lowest branches, keeping her shoulders below the wolves’ sightline. She turns into the cold downhill current, letting it carry her scent away from the pack.

Her boots find packed earth, stone, and old needles instead of brittle snow. Each measured step follows the wind’s hush while the wolves remain fixed on the silent shrine.

Beau

Beau

The wind favors me. They are watching the bell tower, not the slope.

Beau passes below the gathered animals, one hand steadying the ration sack and the other keeping her axe close. A branch trembles overhead, masking the faint scrape of leather.

The largest wolf lifts its muzzle toward the ridge as the bell rope stirs without wind. Its attention never shifts downhill, and Beau slips beyond the pack’s line of sight.

She climbs the final rise through black grass and crusted snow. The shrine’s stone wall rises before her, close enough to touch, while four wolves remain below and unaware.

Beau reaches the shrine unnoticed and settles into the shadow of its narrow bell tower. Above, the motionless rope hangs against the dark stone.

Quest Complete

Reach the shrine

“Beau seizes the opportunity to investigate the stone and listen to any sounds going on around here. She is looking for any clues as to what drew the wolves here, or why.”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled +0)

The Bell Calls the Pack

Beau presses her scarred palm against the shrine wall and studies the black stone by touch. Frost rims the joints, but the blocks are dry beneath the surface.

Beau

Beau

The mortar is newer than the stone.

She lowers her ear to the wall. Beneath the mountain’s wind, a slow vibration travels through the blocks, repeating at the same interval as the silent bell rope’s sway.

A faint sound answers from inside: not voices, but a dragging scrape followed by three soft knocks. The pattern repeats, muffled below the shrine floor.

Near the tower’s base, Beau finds narrow claw marks crossing the frost and ending at a fitted stone slab. Wolf tracks surround it, but none lead away toward the ridge.

The largest wolf’s prints stop directly before the slab. Between them lies a tuft of white fur, bright against the dark grit, carrying a bitter scent like old ash.

Below, the pack remains fixed on the tower. The bell rope gives another soundless pull, and from beneath Beau’s boots comes one deliberate knock.

“Beau knocks back in the same pattern it just did.”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

The Bell Calls the Pack

Beau curls her knuckles against the fitted slab and answers the hidden rhythm: one knock, then three soft knocks. The stone carries the sound inward.

For a breath, the shrine holds still. Then the dragging scrape reverses beneath her boots, followed by three answering knocks from directly under the slab.

A seam brightens with thin blue light. Frost melts along the edges, and the fitted stone sinks several inches before sliding aside into the floor.

A narrow stairwell descends beneath the shrine, its steps cut into black rock. Cold air rises carrying ash, iron, and the faint smell of wet fur.

Below the ridge, the wolves react at last. The largest turns toward the tower, ears pricked, while the silent bell rope begins to sway.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

The threshold is open. Enter before the mountain remembers your scent.

The voice comes from the stairwell, low and worn, with no body visible below. Blue light pulses along the steps, revealing fresh white fur caught on a lower edge.

“Beau, surprised and at awe, stands at the opening for a moment before taking a slow, cautious step inside. Then a more confident second. She enters the passageway despite her unease.”

SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +0)

The Bell Calls the Pack

Beau pauses at the stairwell, surprised by the blue-lit depths and the old magic breathing through the stone. Awe holds her still for one measured moment.

Then she lowers her axe, keeps the ration sack tight against her side, and places one boot onto the first step. The rock bears her weight without complaint.

Her second step is firmer. She descends beneath the shrine, shoulders angled against the narrow walls, while blue light gathers across her scarred face.

The passage receives her completely. Above, the slab slides shut with a muted stone-on-stone sigh, sealing out the wind and the wolves’ restless movement.

Below, the stair opens into a low corridor lined with black pillars. Ash lies undisturbed except for a single trail of fresh white fur leading deeper.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

Good. The mountain has heard your choosing. Keep your blade lowered, and it may yet hear your name.

““Show yourself,” Beau answers, her axe in hand but blade pointed towards the ground. “I have yet know who invites me into their home.””

Show yourself. I have yet to know who invites me into their home.

Beau keeps her axe in hand, blade lowered. Her words travel between the pillars, and the blue light gathers ahead of her in a wavering human outline.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

I cannot show what the mountain has taken from me. I am the Keeper Below, and I opened the threshold.

The outline reaches toward a pillar, but its arm breaks into sparks before any face forms. The sparks sink into the ash, leaving the corridor empty again.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

You seek a name. The stone remembers mine, but my tongue does not. Call me the Ashen Keeper, if you must call me anything.

At the title, every pillar answers with a dull knock. The white fur trail shifts across the ash, turning sharply toward a sealed archway on the left.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

Your question has opened what your eyes cannot. Follow the fur, or leave before the mountain closes its second door.

Have the hidden presence identify itself

“Beau raises her head and turns her eyes to the floor. She wants to find out what is calling the wolves. Gripping her axe, she follows the trail of fur leading deeper into the mountain.”

SUCCESS (Good Perception, rolled -1)

The Bell Calls the Pack

Beau raises her head and turns her eye to the floor. Gripping her axe, she follows the white fur through the sealed archway, deeper beneath the mountain.

The passage slopes into a vast chamber. Black stone ribs curve overhead, and a circular pit occupies the center, its depths glowing with the same blue light.

White fur clings to the pit’s rim. As Beau crosses the chamber, her axe catches a jutting ribstone, wrenching her shoulder and striking a hard crack through the silence.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

There. The mountain heard you arrive, and the wolves heard the wound in its heart.

Blue light rises from the pit, revealing a massive pale skull half-buried below. Golden eyes burn within its empty sockets, and its black nose points toward the shrine above.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

That is what calls them. Not a beast living beneath the stone, but the memory of one trapped in the mountain’s keeping.

The skull’s jaw opens without sound. Far overhead, four wolves answer with a single mournful howl, while fresh cracks spread across the pit’s blue-lit rim.

““Is it bad?” Beau asks the Ashen keeper. “What will happen if it reaches the shrine? Do the wolves want to let it out?””

Beau

Beau

Is it bad? What will happen if it reaches the shrine? Do the wolves want to let it out?

The skull’s golden sockets flare brighter. Around the pit, the spreading cracks stop, and the wolves’ howls fade into uneasy silence above.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

Yes. If the memory reaches the shrine, it will wear the bell’s voice and call every wolf for leagues.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

The dead shape will not be freed. It will be given a road, and its hunger will travel wherever the mountain can hear.

A pulse moves through the blue-lit floor. The skull turns slightly toward Beau, though its buried bones remain fixed in stone.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

The wolves do not understand what they serve. The call bends them. They guard the way because the memory promises release from its keeping.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

You asked what will happen. Now you know the danger, and the mountain has shown you the heart of it. Decide whether the bell rings.

“Beau takes a step away from the shrine, shaking her head faintly. “No. No, I will not free it. This needs to stay in its stone, and I will not interfere.””

SUCCESS (Fair Willpower, rolled +0)

The Bell Calls the Pack

Beau takes a measured step back from the pit, shaking her head faintly. Her injured shoulder protests, sending a sharp ache down her arm, but she keeps her axe lowered.

Beau

Beau

No. No, I will not free it. This needs to stay in its stone, and I will not interfere.

The blue glow gutters around the skull. Cracks along the pit’s rim draw closed, one by one, while the golden sockets dim behind layers of unmoving stone.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

Then you have chosen the harder mercy. The memory stays bound, and the bell remains silent.

A heavy knock rolls through the chamber. Dust spills from the black ribs overhead, and the ache in Beau’s shoulder sharpens as the mountain settles around its captive.

Ashen Keeper

Ashen Keeper

But refusal has a price. The seal now knows your weight, your scent, and the shape of your will.

The skull sinks beneath the blue-lit floor until only dark stone remains. Above, the wolves begin to move, their paws thudding faintly beyond the sealed shrine.
