The corridor yawns open, black water trembling across the floor. Pipes shudder overhead. The pale thing peels free from the wall, too tall, too thin, its head tilted like it is listening through Daniel.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

Keep your footing, novice. It wants surprise, not distance.

Daniel steps into the slick darkness, sword low. The thing jerks forward, then stops, its shape wavering like a reflection in dirty glass.

Daniel

Daniel

The water on the floor is deeper near the wall.

The corridor answers with a wet drag as the pale figure stretches one arm toward Daniel, then another, testing the air. Its face is almost human, but wrong in the eyes.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

Strike when it commits. If it mirrors you, break the pattern.

Daniel closes the gap, and the thing lunges at last, long fingers cutting through the stagnant dark toward his throat.

✓ Quest Accepted

Repel the pale figure

Daniel shifts his weight and checks the corridor behind him. The black water gives him nothing, only a thin sheen and the pale smear on the wall, but the feeling of being watched changes shape.

Daniel

Daniel

It is not alone.

Something moves in the dark reflection, not from the front, but behind the Grey Hunter at the doorway. A second pale outline clings to the corridor’s edge, borrowing a human height for a breath.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

Back! It is changing faces.

Daniel catches it in time, but the barest twist of motion costs him. The slick floor slides under his boot, and his balance scrapes loud enough to echo through the stair.

The lunging figure falters, then splits its attention between Daniel and the new shape in the dark, as if deciding which one to wear.

The Grey Hunter raises a warning hand, tense at the threshold. 'Now, novice, before it settles.'

Daniel thrusts his free hand down into the black water, and the stairwell answers with a sudden churn. A narrow column rises at his command, twisting up toward the pale shape like a whip of cold glass.

For one sharp breath, the column sharpens into spear points. Then the figure blurs, its human outline slipping sideways, and the water drives through empty space with a wet crack against stone.

The impact blows spray across the corridor, soaking the smear on the wall and the hem of Daniel's coat. The creature recoils, but only part of it, as if the rest has already gone thin.

The pale thing drags itself out of the strike by wearing the wrong shape, shoulders bending too far, face refusing to stay fixed. The water spears leave shallow cuts in the surface, not in flesh.

Daniel

Daniel

The body is not holding.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

It is slipping the hit, force it to choose one face.

The corridor goes still for a heartbeat, water hissing back into the drain grooves, while the pale figure hovers between forms, closer now and harder to read.

Bordel.

Daniel keeps still and lets the water speak. Beneath the surface, the pale figure does not move like one body, it fractures into half-seen angles, then snaps back whenever the light catches it.

Daniel

Daniel

It is borrowing shapes from the dark, not wearing one fixed form.

The thing skims the air above the flood instead of the floor, its outline thinning where the corridor narrows, thickening where spray and shadow meet. It keeps drifting toward the iron door, as if the threshold itself steadies it.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

Do not chase the body, Daniel. Watch where it commits.

A pulse of cold runs through the stairwell, and the smear on the wall gleams wetly under the water hiss. For an instant, the pale figure has a face, then loses it again, and Daniel catches the pattern, shadow first, shape second.

The insight costs him a sting across his wrist as the flood snaps back from the creature's passing, leaving his sleeve soaked through and heavy.

The pale thing hangs just out of reach, wavering between two forms, while the Grey Hunter tightens at the doorway and waits for Daniel's next move.

Daniel stops advancing. He lowers his breathing, waits for the pale thing to choose flesh, and shifts his weight for a counterstroke. The flood answers first, lifting around his boots in a slow, black pulse.

The entity jerks into a human outline for one heartbeat, shoulder and jaw snapping solid above the water. Daniel commits at once, but his blade cuts only through cold vapor as the shape peels sideways into shadow.

Daniel

Daniel

Its face is the weak point. It is trying to show me one.

The miss sends a sheet of water across the floor. In the splash, the pale smear on the wall flashes like a wet handprint, and Daniel sees it, the thing keeps anchoring itself near that mark.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

There. It borrows a body, then slips. Cut where it settles, not where it glitters.

Daniel recovers his guard, but the creature has already thinned again. The opening remains, brief and usable, as the corridor itself seems to brace for the next lunge.

SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Daniel draws his breath inward and the flood rises with it. Water whips up around his boots, then climbs in a clear cylinder that seals the corridor with a shivering wall.

The pale thing hits the barrier and breaks shape, its outline smearing across the water like ink in a jar. The wall holds, but the impact shudders through Daniel’s arm and steals heat from his wrist.

The Grey Hunter

The Grey Hunter

Good. Keep it moving. It hates being pinned to one form.

Inside the ring, the entity jerks backward from the wall smear, suddenly less sure of itself. Its face blurs, then stretches, and the reflection on the flood bends around it like a closing eye.

Daniel

Daniel

The water is mine for a moment.

The cylinder starts to spin faster, and the black water hammers the floor in a tight whirl. The cost is immediate, Daniel’s injured wrist flares white-hot, and droplets spray into the Grey Hunter’s face at the threshold.

The pale figure recoils deeper into shadow, no longer pressing the attack, while the stairwell groans around the sealed ring. Behind the water, the smeared mark on the wall shines like a fresh wound, waiting.
