The Adamantite Claim

Deep under the slums, Blezzy works alone in a narrow mine shaft, lanternlight trembling over rough stone and old timber braces. Her pickaxe bites into a glittering seam, each strike ringing with a bright, hungry note.

The rock splits. A raw vein of adamantite flashes blue-white in the dark, more valuable than anything this shaft has ever yielded.

Blezzy

Blezzy

Adamantite. Finally.

A loose pebble skitters from above. Then another. Dust drifts down like cold ash.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Easy, miner. Do not swing that blade at me.

A hooded figure steps out from a side cut in the tunnel, one hand raised, the other clutching a lantern shrouded in green glass. The light washes their face into shadow, but their voice is calm and precise.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You stand on ore that belongs to someone very important. Leave the seam, and I may yet keep this pleasant.

Behind them, deeper in the dark, something vast exhales, and the shaft answers with a long, low groan from the timber supports.

Secure the adamantite vein

“Too deep in my work-mode mindset and not registering that the hooded figure is speaking at all, let alone to me, I begin picking up the few pieces of the Adamantite that fell and put them in my backpack. Then I pick up my pickaxe again and continue swinging at the ore vein - with more precise strokes this time.”

Blezzy stoops without looking up, scooping the fallen adamantite chips one by one and feeding them into her backpack. The seam gleams at her feet.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Stop. That vein is sealed for a reason.

Blezzy ignores the warning, resets her grip, and brings the pickaxe down in a tighter line.

The next strike bites true. A clean furrow opens in the adamantite, and the loosened rock gives way with a bright, ringing crack.

More ore frees at once, spilling into a glittering pile instead of shattering deep into the wall.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

No... she is actually cutting it open.

The timber overhead groans louder. Dust rains down in a sudden sheet as the tunnel shudders around them.

Miner, look up. Now.

Escape the collapsing mine

Adamantite ore

“Securing my ore, I finally take stock of my surroundings only now realizing that the shaft is collapsing. I quickly stash my pickaxe in my bag and bolt further into the mine shaft - opposite of the hooded figure, further toward the dangerously collapsing mineshaft. Whispering to myself, "If I can make it to the far end, I can climb out without being seen by anyone, thus preventing anyone from stealing these valuable ores," I take a sharp right turn at the first intersection. The passage is barely large enough for me to fit through, even small as my own frame is.”

FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled -1)

The Adamantite Claim
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Blezzy snatches at the pickaxe and stuffs it into her backpack in one rough motion. She pivots hard for the side passage, ore still clattering at her heels.

The tunnel floor lurches under her boots. Dust bursts from the ceiling, and she stumbles as the first turn narrows to a tight slit of stone.

Blezzy

Blezzy

Too narrow.

Her shoulder catches the wall. The pack drags wide, scraping sparks from the rock as she forces herself through anyway.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Wait. If you run that way, you will be trapped in the lower cut.

Behind her, timber cracks like snapping bones. A heavy span shifts, and the main shaft coughs a fresh wave of grit into the air.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Blezzy, choose. Back to me, or deeper into the fall?

“With the walls so close together, I brace my feet between the two sides and begin climbing upwards towards the small hole in the ceiling - the spot I was hoping to get to in the first place, since this route is far too small for most creatures to pass through. As I begin to climb, I finally hear the sound of the voice from the Hooded figure and am distracted as I turn my head trying to locate the owner of the voice that I am no longer in the same passage to see.”

FAILURE (Terrible Agility, rolled +2)

Blezzy jams her boots into the slit and heaves upward. The stone bites, slick with dust, and her feet skid half a span before finding nothing solid.

A tremor rolls through the shaft. The narrow route shivers, and powdered rock rains down her hair and shoulders as the ceiling groans again.

Blezzy

Blezzy

The hole is higher than it looked.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Stop climbing. The seam above is not safe.

Blezzy twists toward the voice, loses her balance, and scrapes one arm hard against the stone. The turn steals her purchase.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

If you keep going, the choke point will crush shut.

The passage narrows with a sharp crack. Dust billows between them, and the small opening overhead remains just out of reach.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

Blezzy, now. Back this way, or you are buried in the cut.

“I steady myself with my left hand. I take a quick, large gulp from my liquor bottle with my right hand. As the whiskey burns its way down my throat, I feel reinvigorated. Placing my bottle back in the strap against in skin for what constitutes for clothing at my mid-section, I try climbing once again, a renewed vigor in my limbs from the whiskey I just consumed.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +1)

The Adamantite Claim
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Blezzy plants her left hand against the grit-slick wall, fingers spreading over a shallow seam. Her scarred feet brace below as the passage trembles around her.

With her right hand, she draws the liquor bottle from the strap of her loincloth, where it rests against her skin below her bellybutton.

She takes a quick, large gulp. Whiskey burns down her throat through the dust, and renewed vigor gathers sharply in her arms and legs.

Blezzy returns the bottle to that same loincloth strap beneath her bellybutton, leaving it snug against her skin. She grips the stone with both hands.

With legendary strength, she hauls herself upward. Her boots catch successive ledges, and she pulls her narrow frame through the constricting choke point into an upper pocket.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You made it through. Keep moving, miner.

Below, the passage collapses with a thunderous crack, sealing the route behind her. Through settling dust, the hooded figure's green lantern dwindles to a muted glow.

“From the hole at the top, as I turn around, I now see the hooded figure that I had failed to hear speaking to me as I was climbing. I tilt my head curiously at it as I watch it remain there in a collapsing cave, unmoving.”

FAILURE (Good Perception, rolled -2)

The Adamantite Claim
The Hooded Figure
The Hooded Figure

Blezzy turns within the upper pocket and tilts her head toward the collapsed passage. Dust veils the lower cut, where the hooded figure's green lantern still glimmers.

Blezzy

Blezzy

The lantern is still there, but the figure is not moving.

She squints through the settling grit. The hooded silhouette stands below the broken timbers, rigid and indistinct, but its face remains hidden by shadow.

The Hooded Figure

The Hooded Figure

You cannot hear me from there, miner. Do not come back.

The Hooded Figure's words reach her only as a faint vibration through stone. Before its posture or purpose can become clear, another slab drops between them.

The green light vanishes behind the fresh blockage. The upper pocket shudders, and a hairline crack spreads across the only ledge leading back toward the hole.

“I pull out my bottle and start drinking again. Luckily, I filled it up before coming out here, and since the bottle has the same spell that makes a magic bag hold more items within it, I am able to store vastly more liquid inside this tiny bottle. As I drink, I pull out my pickaxe and being hitting the wall from the ceiling beside me, as I try to find more parts of the cave that want to collapse so that it collapses with me on the outside of the cave, rather than on the inside as happened last time.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Mining, rolled +1)

The Adamantite Claim

Blezzy draws the tiny bottle from its strap and drinks deeply. Its enchanted interior yields far more liquor than its glassy size should contain, and the burn steadies her limbs.

She stows the bottle, pulls out her pickaxe, and sets its head against the ceiling beside the pocket. Each blow rings through the stone and timber.

Blezzy

Blezzy

The ceiling is already carrying too much weight.

Blezzy follows the answering cracks, striking the wall and overhead seam with deliberate force. Dust pours down as hidden fractures join beneath her blows.

The weakened shelf gives way beyond the pocket. Rock collapses outward into the abandoned cut, while the ledge beneath Blezzy remains firm and open.

A final thunder rolls through the mine. The upper pocket settles, sealed from the lower passage, and a broader escape route opens toward the outer side of the cave.

Dust thins in the lanternless gloom. Behind the new collapse, the hooded figure and its green light are fully cut off, while fresh stone glitters along the exposed wall.

“Having fully secured my exit with no more ceiling above me to collapse onto me, I jump back down into the mine shaft, the air rushing below me temporarily forcing my loincloth to cover my stomach. Once on the ground, I begin tapping my pickaxe against the glimmering rocks on the cave's walls. As I mine, I continue to drink my whiskey from the bottle, too eager for the alcohol to stop mining each time I take a drink from my bottle.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Mining, rolled +2)

The Adamantite Claim

With the pocket secured overhead, Blezzy jumps back into the mine shaft. Air rushes beneath her, lifting the edge of her loincloth briefly across her stomach before her boots strike the ground.

The landing sends a dull tremor through the settled floor, but no ceiling answers. Dust drifts harmlessly from the newly opened route as Blezzy straightens among the glittering walls.

She raises the pickaxe and taps the exposed rock in a measured rhythm. Small chips loosen from the cave wall, flashing silver, blue, and pale gold in the dim light.

Between strikes, Blezzy draws the tiny bottle from its strap and drinks deeply. The enchanted glass yields whiskey without emptying, and she lowers it only long enough to swing again.

Blezzy

Blezzy

The glimmering rock continues farther along the wall.

Her mining settles into a tireless cycle: tap, crack, gather, drink. Whiskey burns through the dust while the pickaxe steadily opens a fresh scatter of valuable ore.

The shaft grows quieter around her, the collapse sealed behind and the escape route secured above. Only ringing metal, falling chips, and the endless enchanted bottle break the stillness.

Director's note

whichever happens first

“I mine until I either cannot hold any more ores, or until I run out of ores to mine. Once I have to leave, I leave through the exit on the ceiling that is my only avenue of escaping the mine shafts.”

SUCCESS (Legendary Mining, rolled -3)

The Adamantite Claim

Blezzy mines until the measured rhythm becomes a steady thunder. Silver, blue, and pale-gold ore gathers around her boots, filling the pack, her pockets, and every spare fold of cloth.

The vein runs stubbornly along the wall, but each strike yields less. Her pickaxe bites through the final glittering seam, and the exposed stone answers with only dull dust.

Blezzy

Blezzy

The ore is gone, and the pack cannot hold another chip.

She wedges in one last fragment by force. The overloaded pack tears a strap at the shoulder, and several lesser pieces spill across the floor before she gathers the rest.

The cost leaves her burden awkward and heavy, but the mine offers nothing more. She secures the pickaxe, braces beneath the ceiling exit, and reaches for its rough stone lip.

With a powerful pull, Blezzy hauls herself upward through the opening. Boots scrape the rim, then find firmer ground as she emerges from the shafts into the dim slum air.

“I head into the slums and work my way to the same shop I obtained my pickaxe from. Once there, I present to them all my mined ores and begin to barter a price for them. After agreeing on a price - which includes the repairing of my torn backpack - I find a spot to sit down at inside the shop and wait while they count out the coin they owe to me and repair the backpack. I sit on the floor with my knees drawn up and spread apart, my feet flat on the floor, as I lean back against the wall of the shop.”

the shopkeeper

Blezzy works through the slums beneath the fading daylight, her overloaded pack dragging at its torn strap until she reaches the familiar pickaxe shop.

The shopkeeper, her weathered face lightly freckled, a broad-shouldered middle-aged woman with iron-gray braids, a copper-studded leather apron, and a magnifying lens over one eye, looks up from her counter.

Blezzy

I have ore to trade. Include repairing the pack in the price.

Set it out, then. Adamantite will make this an interesting reckoning, and I will mend the strap while we settle.

Blezzy presents the silver, blue, pale-gold, and adamantite pieces across the counter. The shopkeeper weighs and sorts them, naming figures while stitching the torn leather with waxed cord.

Agreed. This many coins, and the backpack repaired. No haggling remains unless you want to count every chip yourself.

Blezzy sits on the shop floor with her knees drawn up and apart, feet flat, her back against the wall. Nearby, the shopkeeper counts out the agreed coin and finishes the mending.
