Marcus sits in the mist and lets his breath slow. The clearing answers with a low pulse from the earth, steady as a second heartbeat beneath his own.
He opens himself to the forest, not as master, but as listener. Roots, rot, rain, and green hush crowd around his mind like a ring of old voices.

Marcus
If the wood will lend strength, it must be on terms the wood accepts.

The Oak
Strength can be given. So can a name. So can a life.

Brann
Marcus, please. If the tree takes what it wants, the thing in the mist may pass us by.
The oak’s hollow mouth widens. Sap-bright veins flare under the bark, and the air tastes suddenly of wet iron and old bark.
From the fog beyond the trees, a thin answering whisper drifts closer, hungry for a name. The forest waits with Marcus at the center of the bargain.

Gain the forest's strength without losing himself
Director's note
With the strength of the Forrest behind me, I invoke a Druidic cleansing upon the cursed tree

Marcus raises the cleansing through the clearing. Pale green light gathers around the oak’s split hollow, and the sap veins flare, then recoil. The bark shudders as if something inside it is being unstitched. Brann flinches, while the whisper in the fog catches and frays at the edge of the trees.

With the strength of the Forrest behind me, I invoke a Druidic cleansing upon the cursed tree

The green wash sinks into the bark like rain into ash. The oak convulses, then steadies, its split hollow breathing out a thin, pale mist while the distant branch snap answers from deeper in the trees.

The Oak
Take what strength you seek, druid, and leave what the forest cannot keep.
“(I question) I have defeated the haunted tree, Free The Bound Figure at once!”
SUCCESS (Legendary Arcana, rolled +0)

Marcus lets the forest’s force settle through his staff, then turns it back through the oak’s open heart. The pale mist in the hollow brightens, threads apart, and slips free like a loosened knot.
The ropes on the Bound Figure’s wrists fray at once, then fall away in damp coils as the bark’s grip lets go.

Brann
It worked... the tree is releasing them.
Brann straightens from the root, eyes wide on Marcus and the emptied hollow. The oak’s sap veins dim from green to amber, no longer straining.

The Bound Figure
I can breathe again.
From beyond the clearing, another branch snaps in the fog, closer than before. The freed figure staggers one step back from the roots, staring into the trees.

Brann
If the forest has taken its due, then choose quickly. The hunter is still out there.
