The skeletons remain motionless around Yeriel, rusted blades lowered. Their empty sockets face him while the freed Heroes gather beyond the thorn-ring, wary but unwilling to leave.

One skeleton kneels beside the sealed threshold and scratches an ancient oath-sign into the soil with one finger. Pale light seeps through the fresh lines.

That mark is forbidden succession. The order used it only when command passed beyond blood, rank, and burial.

The demon queen steadies Yeriel against her, one hand firm at his bandaged side. Behind them, the former Heroes remain clustered near the path, while she and the wounded former ally stay with him.

the demon queen

Beloved, do not answer lightly. If the dead recognize you, their oath may bind you to every grave in this ring.

the wounded former ally

We buried that succession beneath his name. If the mark has returned, then the order never truly released him.

The kneeling skeleton lifts its skull. One by one, the others lower themselves until the clearing holds a silent army on one knee, awaiting Yeriel's response.

A former Hero, an adult woman with a lean frame, cropped silver hair, and a weathered green cloak, breaks from the kneeling line and raises her sword toward Yeriel.

The demon queen twists protectively over Yeriel, but the strike is already descending. Steel flashes toward his exposed shoulder.

The nearest skeleton rises with startling speed. Its rusted shield catches the blade, and the impact rings through the clearing like a funeral bell.

the former Hero

the former Hero

The dead kneel to a curse, not a king. I will not let it claim him.

The skeleton's shield splinters, but its sword arm clamps around the attacker's wrist and forces her blade toward the soil. Pale oath-light binds both weapons together.

He is under their protection now. Lower your weapon, or let the graves judge your next breath.

The clash shatters the clearing's silence. More skulls turn toward the former Heroes, and the wounded former ally steps between them, his face tightening with suspicion.

“Out of nowhere I get up and look around, wondering what's going on and and my whole body hurts”

Yeriel pushes himself upright beneath the sealed crest. Pain tears through his bandaged side and shoulder, and fresh blood seeps where the bindings strain.

Yeriel

Yeriel

My whole body hurts, but I can stand.

He looks across the clearing and takes it in: the former Hero's sword remains locked against the skeleton's shield, while the dead kneel around him in oath-lit silence.

the demon queen

Slowly, beloved. The graves have risen in your name, and the living are afraid of what that means.

The sudden movement draws every skull toward him. The wounded former ally raises one hand, restraining the other Heroes as their fear hardens into suspicion.

He wakes, and the dead answer him. Tell me this is not the succession mark choosing a new master.

the wounded former ally

the wounded former ally

It is. Yeriel has risen beneath the order's forbidden oath, and every grave in this ring now recognizes him.

Dead, rise. Lower your weapons, face the living, and obey my command.

The oath-sign blazes beneath Yeriel's feet. Every skeleton rises together, rusted armor groaning, then turns in perfect unison toward the former Heroes.

The bound sword drops from the former Hero's hand. Shields lift across the ring, forming a silent wall between Yeriel, his wife, and the frightened living.

the demon queen

You command them. Beloved, the graves hear your will as law.

The cost arrives at once. Yeriel's shoulder wound opens beneath the strained bandage, and blood runs down his arm as pale fire climbs his veins.

Then the dead have chosen him. We are not prisoners, are we? Or will your new army decide that for you?

Hold formation! No one strikes. Yeriel has control, but the succession oath now answers every order he gives.

Yeriel

Yeriel

Why did you try to kill me?

His command holds, but the oath-fire tightens through his veins. Blood slips from the reopened shoulder wound, darkening the demon queen's bandage as the former Hero lowers her gaze.

the former Hero

the former Hero

Because I believed the order's lie. They told us you carried the curse, that killing you would free the dead and save everyone beyond this grove.

the wounded former ally

the wounded former ally

She was not told the whole truth. We were ordered to hunt you after the betrayal, while the elders erased every record naming who broke the first oath.

the former Hero

I saw your sword rise, your demons at your side, and feared the story was true. Then the skeleton shielded you, and I understood the graves recognized their rightful commander.

the demon queen

Her fear was forged by your order, beloved, but the blade was still hers. Let her answer what she did, and decide what justice your dead will enforce.

The skeletons remain motionless, shields raised but silent. The former Hero releases her sword completely and kneels, while pale oath-light crawls from the soil around her knees.

Yeriel crosses the oath-lit space and seizes the former Hero by the throat, lifting her just enough to break her kneeling posture. The skeletons hold formation.

Yeriel

Yeriel

All I wanted was a quiet life with my wife and to have children. You are making that impossible for me, and I have to fight every day.

Her boots scrape the soil. Pale light snaps around Yeriel's wrist, not loosening his grip, but marking the force of his anger across every watching grave.

the former Hero

Then you have every reason to hate me. I believed the lie, and I raised my sword. I cannot undo that.

Beloved, she stands beneath your judgment now. Do not let the order's violence teach you to become its hand.

the wounded former ally

The elders made war against your life and called it duty. If you demand the truth, I will name the surviving witnesses.

The oath-fire pulses through the former Hero's throat and Yeriel's arm together. Behind her, the kneeling dead turn their skulls toward the wounded former ally, awaiting the next command.

“I throw her to the floor and tell her, "I'm not going to kill you, I forgive you, but don't let it happen again, or you won't live to see another day." Then I look at the other guy and tell him to tell me everything.”

I'm not going to kill you. I forgive you, but don't let it happen again, or you won't live to see another day.

The warning settles over the clearing. The former Hero lowers her head, and the oath-light releases her throat, though the cost leaves Yeriel's injured shoulder bleeding freely.

Now, tell me everything.

The elders broke the first oath to bind Nharos, then named you its vessel when the seal marked your blood. They ordered us to hunt you and destroy every record that could expose them.

Three elders survived the purge. Maelin kept the sealed archives beneath the Hall of Vows. Serrik commands the order's remaining knights. And High Seer Othra knows who first offered your name to the prison.

The skeletons turn toward the forest beyond the thorn-ring, as though recognizing those names. The former Heroes exchange frightened looks, and the demon queen presses fresh cloth against Yeriel's shoulder.
