Safeguards Near Disengagement
Ms N
Ms N

Ash arrives inside a cavernous warehouse with their metallic arm pinned behind them and restraint bands cinched across their chest. Sodium lights flicker over stacked cargo and armed captors.

Ms N with a lean build and angular features stands between Ash and the bomb controls, a middle-aged woman in a black tactical coat with silver-streaked hair, mirrored lenses, and a thin scar crossing her chin.

Ms N

Ms N

Stay still. The safeguards are almost disengaged.

Several terrorists keep rifles trained from the loading bays. Across the concrete floor, separate control consoles blink beneath active countdown displays, their red digits dropping in synchronized pulses.

Ms N

Ms N

Any struggle, any sudden movement, and my people stop waiting. You will watch the system finish.

A ceiling camera pivots toward Ash, its iris narrowing as wireless interference crackles through the warehouse. Somewhere behind the cargo stacks, a relay clicks into its final sequence.

Rook

Rook

Boss, the last lock is clearing now.

““So what is your name” I ask the one armed terrorist trying to get them distracted enough so I could dislocate my robotic arm”

Ash

So what is your name?

Rook

Rook

You want a name now? Rook. That’s what they call me.

Rook, a young adult man with a wiry build, close-cropped black hair, brown skin, and a narrow scar over one eyebrow, wearing a dark tactical vest and cargo trousers turns from the relay, rifle dipping as he studies Ash through the shifting sodium light. The countdowns continue pulsing across the consoles.

While Rook is distracted, Ash twists their restrained shoulder and forces the metallic arm against its joint. The cybernetic socket pops free with a sharp mechanical click, leaving the arm hanging loose behind them.

Ash

Ash

The arm is dislocated, but the restraint bands still cross my chest.

Ms N

Ms N

Rook. Eyes on the prisoner. Now.

Rook snaps his rifle back toward Ash, but the moment has already changed the room. Wireless static thickens around the ceiling camera as the relay completes its sequence.

“Is there anything sharp”

YES (VeryLikely, rolled 41)

Safeguards Near Disengagement

A restraint buckle has cracked under the strain, exposing a jagged sliver of hardened alloy beside Ash’s ribs. It glints whenever the sodium lights stutter.

Ash

Ash

The broken buckle is sharp.

Rook

Rook

Boss, the band’s damaged. They’ve got an edge against them.

Ms N’s mirrored lenses angle toward the buckle. Behind her, the consoles emit a rising electronic whine as the synchronized countdowns pass another threshold.

Ms N

Ms N

Do not touch the restraints. Tighten the chest bands and keep that arm pinned.

Two rifles shift closer from the loading bays. The ceiling camera jitters through bands of static, briefly losing Ash’s silhouette before locking on again.

Rook

Rook

If that shard cuts the line, we lose the override.

“I try to cut the restraints”

Ash angles their torso against the broken buckle, catches the jagged alloy with their free hand, and works it loose from the restraint frame.

Ash

Ash

The shard is hot against my palm.

They saw the shard across the chest band’s exposed tension line. The hardened material bites through the binding with a harsh metallic rasp, and the band springs open.

Rook

Rook

They cut it! Drop the shard and pin them!

The released band snaps back and bruises Ash’s ribs, leaving their breathing tight. Their chest is free, though the remaining restraint still traps their dislocated metallic arm behind them.

Ms N

Ms N

Do not fire. The override is still live, and I want that arm contained.

Rifles track Ash from both loading bays as the countdown consoles flare white. The ceiling camera reacquires their silhouette, static crawling over its feed.

Ash breaks toward Ms N, one arm free and the dislocated metallic limb dragging behind. Rifles swing with them, but the sudden charge disrupts every clean firing angle.

Ash

Ash

No one move.

Ms N pivots faster than expected. Ash reaches her, but the remaining restraint yanks their shoulder backward; the shard skids across her collar instead of settling at her throat.

Ms N

Ms N

Freeze. The shard is close enough to ruin both our night, but not close enough to control this room.

Her movement exposes a slim data jack beneath her coat, linked by a glowing cable to the nearest console. The countdown display reflects in her lenses, still descending.

Rook

Rook

Boss, say the word. I can take the shoulder and the shard.

The rifles hold fire. Ash has a narrow opening beside Ms N, while the restraint cable visibly runs from their trapped arm toward a floor anchor.

“I slash the restraint off my right arm using the shard”

SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +0)

Ms N

Ash twists against the floor anchor and drives the hardened alloy shard into the restraint around their right arm. Metal shrieks under the pressure.

The shard saws through the remaining band. It parts with a sharp snap, and the dislocated metallic arm drops free behind them, cable dragging across the concrete.

Ms N

Ms N

Rook, hold your fire. The restraint is down, but the override remains live.

Ash stands clear of the broken restraint, shard still in hand. The severed band clatters beside the floor anchor while the countdown consoles flare brighter.

Rook

Rook

They’re loose. Boss, the arm is free.

Ms N keeps one shoulder between Ash and the nearest console, her data jack cable glowing beneath the black coat. Rifles track Ash without firing.

Ms N

Ms N

Put the shard down, and I may still let you walk out before the city learns what these controls can do.

Ash

Ash

Hahahaha, what do you mean? I thought the whole plan was to capture me and then explode the city.

Ash pivots around Ms N’s shoulder and drives the hardened alloy shard into the nearest console. The point punches through its casing and bites into the glowing control circuitry.

The console erupts in blue sparks. Heat floods Ash’s palm, and the shard welds briefly into the housing as the countdown display glitches, shedding seconds in jagged bursts.

Ms N

Ms N

You stupid, reckless little variable. That console is part of the containment loop.

A harsh alarm rolls through the warehouse. Two consoles go dark, while the remaining displays desynchronize and flash conflicting evacuation codes across the concrete walls.

Rook

Rook

Boss, the city-link just dropped. We’ve lost the synchronized trigger.

Ms N

Ms N

Nobody fires. Seal the doors and bring me the shard. If the failsafe wakes, this warehouse becomes the blast site.

Rook

Ash lunges for the nearest active console, but the hardened shard remains welded in the first housing. Their empty hand strikes the casing instead, denting it without reaching the circuitry.

The impact jolts the damaged console. Its blue sparks crawl through a maintenance bus, forcing the remaining displays into a staggered diagnostic cycle instead of a synchronized trigger.

Ms N

Ms N

Stop. You cannot break the loop by hitting hardware. The diagnostics are exposing the manual isolation channel.

One console unfolds a narrow service panel beneath its screen. Inside, a red optical port pulses beside a printed warning: LOCAL CONTAINMENT OVERRIDE.

Rook

Rook

Boss, the failsafe is rerouting through that panel. Give me the prisoner before they touch it.

Rook advances with his rifle leveled, while Ms N reaches toward the cable beneath her coat. The active consoles now count down independently, each displaying a different remaining interval.

Ms N

Ms N

Ash, step away from the controls. That port can isolate this warehouse, but only if the override accepts a live connection.

✓ Quest Accepted

Leave the warehouse

“"k" i say before walking out of the warehouse”

Ash

Ash

K.

Ash turns from the exposed service panel and walks through the warehouse’s half-open loading doors. Rifles track them, but nobody fires as the alarms stutter behind their retreat.

Ms N

Ms N

Let them go. The isolation channel is still live, and I need the network blind more than I need their body.

Cold neon rain washes the pavement outside. Behind Ash, the warehouse doors seal, cutting the consoles and their conflicting countdowns away from the city-link.

Rook

Rook

Boss, they walked out with the shard still welded into the primary console.

Ms N

Ms N

Then the local loop is ours to contain. Get the doors locked and bring every offline node up on hardline diagnostics.

Across the street, a public transit billboard flickers from an evacuation notice to a blank blue screen. The city network has lost the warehouse, but the remaining timers continue somewhere inside.

Leave the warehouse
