Dask crosses the threshold without waiting, sword raised before him. Rain glitters on his faded guard coat as the warehouse swallows him in timber-dark silence.

Explain the gold bell before I take another step. What does it mean, and why does this place answer it?

A faint chime answers from the rafters, though Oju has not moved. Dust trembles from the beams, and old charms awaken in a ring of pale blue fire.

The glowing marks encircle a chained alcove at the warehouse’s rear. Their light reveals the strongbox resting just outside it, suddenly motionless.

There. It stopped when I named the accusation. Whatever is listening, goat, it knows this bell better than I do.

Dask keeps his blade trained on the chained alcove, but his single eye cuts back toward Oju. Behind them, the open door frames the rain and the empty street.

Speak plainly. Then we decide whether that box comes out, or whether we leave it listening in the dark.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reveal why the warehouse answers the gold bell

“...I don't know anything about this strongbox, Dask. And... This bell is just a bell. There shouldn't be anything magical about it... I think.”

I don't know anything about this strongbox, Dask. This bell is just a bell. There shouldn't be anything magical about it... I think.

Oju’s quiet denial settles beneath the rafters. His keen ears catch no footsteps beyond the rain, only the charms’ faint ringing; his nose finds dust, old wax, and cold iron, nothing arcane clinging to the bell.

You sound like a goat who has found a locked cupboard and insists he never noticed the key. But I believe you do not know what the box is.

The blue fire gutters lower, no longer flaring around Oju’s words. The strongbox remains still outside the chained alcove, and Dask’s sword dips a cautious inch.

As for the bell, I believe you think it ordinary. That is enough truth for now. We retrieve the box, and we do not rouse whatever listens.

Dask steps toward the strongbox, keeping its split-crown seal in view. The charms answer with a dim pulse, but the alcove stays chained and silent.

“Aye... I'm just here for the strongbox, Dask... It's easy coin. If a bit... Heavy looking. Why don't you go ahead and see if you can lift it, hmm?”

Aye... I'm just here for the strongbox, Dask. It's easy coin. If a bit... heavy-looking. Why don't you go ahead and see if you can lift it, hmm?

Dask gives Oju a flat look, then grips the strongbox beneath its iron bands. Oju’s keen ears catch no footsteps beyond the rain, only the charms’ whispering ring; his nose finds cold iron and old wax.

Easy coin, is it? Then watch closely, goat. If this thing bites, I will remember whose clever mouth put my hands on it.

Dask heaves the strongbox free. His boots grind against the boards, but he raises it clear of the floor and holds it against his broad chest, proving the weight can be carried.

There. It lifts. But your favor is no longer an abstract debt. When I call it, you carry something this troublesome without sending me first.

The blue charms dim around the chained alcove. Dask shifts the box into one arm and keeps his sword ready in the other, while the split-crown seal gleams between them.

“Oju glances at the now dimmed alcove, and attempts to make sense of its symbolism, and meaning.”

SUCCESS (Fair Reasoning, rolled +1)

Oju studies the dimmed alcove instead of the box. The pale marks form a broken crown bound within three chains, while the surrounding ring resembles an ear turned toward the bell.

His keen ears separate the charms’ fading notes: the outer ring answers the bell, the chains hush it, and the alcove’s silence is deliberate rather than empty. Dust carries no footprints inside.

Oju

The alcove is a listening ward, built to recognize and contain whoever bears the bell’s claim. The strongbox was placed outside as bait, not stored there.

The symbolism resolves with the last blue sparks: the split crown means divided authority, while the chains mark obedience imposed on something that once answered freely.

You have that look again, goat. Tell me the dark has finally made sense to you.

Dask shifts the strongbox against his chest. The charms do not flare, confirming that the ward is satisfied for now, though its attention remains fixed on Oju’s bell.
