A boot slips on the far side of the shallow ravine. Bark scrapes sharply as a rifle sling catches, and an armed German corporal, with a lean build, pale skin, and a small nick in his left cheek emerges between the dripping trees, a young adult man in a dark field uniform, narrow-faced beneath a steel helmet.
The squad leader’s raised fist stops the file. The freckled squadmate and four other squadmates freeze behind him, rifles held close as rain ticks against leaves and the ravine holds both sides apart.

The Squad Leader
Nobody moves. Do not touch the triggers unless I give the word.
The German corporal turns toward the sound of the squad leader’s command. His right hand remains below the rifle, but his shoulders tighten as he studies the shadowed figures across the ravine.

the German corporal
Americans? Stay where you are.
The word crosses the wet hollow and vanishes into the trees. The squad leader does not lower his fist; the squad remains locked in place, the next breath suddenly louder than the rain.

The Squad Leader
Hold steady. Let him make the next mistake.
“I aim my rifle at the enemy. "Drop your weapon, nobody has to get hurt"”
SUCCESS (Fair Communication, rolled +1)

Beelow15
Drop your weapon. Nobody has to get hurt.
Beelow15 brings his rifle to bear across the ravine, keeping the muzzle steady. The German corporal sees the weapon, then slowly lowers his own rifle into the wet leaves.

the German corporal
All right. Do not fire.
The German corporal raises both empty hands and steps back from his rifle. Rain beads on his helmet while the discarded weapon lies beyond his reach.

The Squad Leader
Keep him covered. You have made us visible, Beelow15, so he gets no chance to call out.
The squad leader’s warning settles over the ravine. The German corporal remains compliant, but the squad’s secrecy is spent; every rifle now points toward the captured crossing.
✓ Quest Accepted
Get the German corporal to cooperate
“With my squadmates covering me I cross the small ravine to secure the now captured german”
FAILURE (Fair Athletics, rolled -2)

With rifles covering the crossing, Beelow15 steps into the shallow ravine and climbs toward the German corporal. Wet earth shears beneath his boot before he reaches the opposite bank.
He drops hard against the muddy slope, catching himself on one hand. His rifle snags across the ravine, leaving him crouched below the surrendered man and separated from it.

the German corporal
Stay down. I am not reaching for anything.
The German corporal keeps both hands raised and remains beside his discarded rifle. Across the hollow, the freckled squadmate and the other squadmates hold their aim while rain runs through the leaves.

The Squad Leader
Beelow15, leave the rifle. Crawl back to this side. We secure him from here.
The failed crossing leaves Beelow15 below the far bank without his rifle, while the corporal remains contained by the squad’s covering fire. The ravine now separates them more dangerously than before.

Get the German corporal to cooperate
“I look over and grab the germans rifle and make prod our new capture to cross the ravine over to the squad”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled -1)

Beelow15 reaches past the corporal and takes the surrendered rifle from the wet leaves. He brings its stock close against the man’s back, directing him toward the ravine.
For one breath, his resolve falters under the corporal’s rigid posture and the squad’s watching rifles. The hesitation shows in his hands, but he steadies the captured weapon and presses forward.

the German corporal
Slowly. I will cross. Do not shoot.
The German corporal steps down the muddy bank with his hands raised. Beelow15 follows close behind, rifle guiding him while rain and loose earth make each crossing step deliberate.
The German corporal reaches the near side and climbs toward the squad leader. Across the ravine, the freckled squadmate and the other squadmates keep their rifles trained until the prisoner stands among them.

The Squad Leader
Good. Keep that rifle on him, Beelow15. We search him and move before anyone else finds us.

“Tell the prisoner we are not going to hurt him if he cooperates. Lean the rifle against a tree out of reach of the german and start searching his pockets”
SUCCESS (Fair Perception, rolled +0)

Beelow15
We are not going to hurt you if you cooperate.
Beelow15 leans the captured rifle against a dripping tree, beyond the corporal’s reach. He keeps one hand ready while the squad’s rifles remain trained across the muddy clearing.

the German corporal
I will cooperate. Search quickly, and keep your men calm.
The corporal holds his hands high as Beelow15 checks his tunic pockets, trouser pockets, belt, and inner jacket. He finds a folded map, a wallet, loose cartridges, and a field compass.

Beelow15
The map is damp, but its markings are still readable.
The search takes longer than a quick pat-down because the wet map must be separated from the wallet without tearing it. Beelow15 finds no hidden weapon, but cannot yet tell whether the map shows this patrol’s route or a larger position.

The Squad Leader
Take the map and compass. Then bring him here. We move before that patrol is missed.
“I tell the squad leader i found a map with potential enemy positions. I move the prisoner over to him and ask him if there are others in the area”
SUCCESS (Fair Communication, rolled +3)

Beelow15
Sergeant, I found a map with potential enemy positions. Are there others in the area?
Beelow15 keeps the map and compass secure, then guides the surrendered corporal across the muddy clearing toward the squad leader. The squad’s rifles track the prisoner without wavering.

the German corporal
I saw no others nearby. My patrol came from the ridge, but this hollow was empty when I crossed it.
The squad leader takes the damp map and compass, keeping the markings beneath his coat. The corporal stops where ordered, hands still visible, while rain darkens his uniform.

The Squad Leader
Good work. We will read the map under cover. Corporal, point out the ridge and tell me what your patrol observed.

the German corporal
The ridge road is watched intermittently. I saw no fixed post, only movement near the eastern track.
The squad leader unfolds the map between them beneath the dripping branches. The squad closes around its leader, alert and silent as he compares the markings with the dark ridge ahead.
