The keep courtyard lies hushed under cold stone and wan light. A messenger slumps against a pillar, barely upright, breathing in ragged pulls.
At his feet stands a wandering swordsman, blade lowered, its edge dark with fresh blood. He does not kneel. He does not help.
Drakan Fyreblade enters the courtyard, the silence tightening around his armor and holy symbol.
The messenger is still alive.
The swordsman turns slowly toward Drakan, as if he has been expecting him all along.

The Swordsman
Too late for him. Maybe not for you.
His gaze holds a deep, ancient malice, old as a buried oath. The messenger’s eyes flutter, fixed on Drakan with desperate warning.

The Messenger
Do not let him finish the vow...

Bring the wandering swordsman to justice
“I draw my blade and step between the swordsman and the dying messenger.”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled -1)

Drakan Fyreblade draws steel in one clean motion and steps into the gap, his body cutting the messenger off from the swordsman.
The wandering swordsman shifts back a pace, blade lifting at last, but the line of attack is broken.

The Messenger
He is between us now... thank the dawn.

Drakan Fyreblade
The path to the wounded man is mine.

The Swordsman
So. You choose to stand where he falls.
The keep’s cold light catches on Drakan’s flaming blade, and the dark stain at their feet seems to widen in the stillness.

The Messenger
He swore to silence me. Stop him... before he reaches the inner hall.
“I press the swordsman before the inner hall”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Drakan surges forward, and steel rings in the courtyard. The swordsman gives ground under the force of it, boots scraping stone.
His guard opens. Drakan drives him sideways, away from the inner hall and toward the torchlit edge of the yard.

The Swordsman
So the dawn dog bites after all.

Drakan Fyreblade
No farther.
The swordsman’s momentum breaks. He stumbles, weapon lowered, and the stained stones keep him from the gate.

The Messenger
Hurry... he cannot reach the hall.
For one breath, the way to the inner hall is held. The swordsman is checked in plain sight, cornered before the keep’s threshold.
“I bind the swordsman before the inner hall”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled +1)

Drakan locks the swordsman in place, steel crossing steel with a hard, final press. The man’s retreat stops cold at the gate, his balance stolen by the bind.

The Swordsman
Tch. So this is your answer.
His blade wavers, then drops a fraction. He cannot slip past Drakan without breaking the line.

The Messenger
Do not let him reach the hall.
Torchlight from Drakan’s sword burns across the stones and catches the keep gate behind the swordsman, turning the threshold into a bright, blocked mouth.

The Swordsman
If I cannot force the hall, I must choose another way.
He shifts his feet, boxed in by Drakan’s guard and the wall of the courtyard. The next move is his, or the messenger’s warning becomes law.
“I restrain the swordsman and disarm him”
SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled +1)

Drakan twists the trapped sword arm down and across, wrenching the weapon free. The swordsman’s grip breaks with a sharp clang as his blade skitters out over the stones.
He follows through in the same motion, forcing the man to one knee against the gate, pinned by the line of Drakan’s body and the glare of the burning sword.

The Swordsman
Enough. I yield this steel.
The messenger exhales hard from the rear of the courtyard, relief cutting through his strain as the threat at the threshold finally breaks.

The Messenger
Bind him, then. Before he lies again.
The swordsman keeps his head bowed, disarmed and unable to reach the hall. The warning has become judgment, and the courtyard falls quiet around the fallen blade.
