Warning Beyond the Road

The horned hound vanishes into the eastern dark. Behind Calisto, Brightburn’s gate remains barred, its captain and watchman watching from the battlements as he turns toward the hills.

Calisto

Calisto

Brightburn, farewell for now. I go seeking an adventure beyond these walls.

Calisto sets out alone, silver armor catching the last gray light beneath his shredded red cape. The road climbs through dry grass toward weathered hills.

the gate captain

the gate captain

Ride wisely, knight. Renown is worth little if the road claims you before you earn it.

The gate captain stays behind with the watchman and the sealed gates. Their figures shrink as Calisto follows the eastern road into gathering dusk.

At a leaning milestone, fresh blood darkens the carved stone. Beneath it, crude letters warn: BEYOND THIS ROAD, THE DEAD WALK UNBURIED.

Wind moves through the grass, carrying no voice, only the faint clink of something unseen farther along the road. The hills wait beyond the warning.

Discover what makes the dead walk unburied

“*i venture the path*”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled -1)

Warning Beyond the Road

Calisto leaves the milestone behind and ventures up the marked path. Dry grass brushes his greaves while the unseen clinking fades beneath the wind.

The trail narrows between leaning stones, its packed earth mottled with old footprints and dark stains. Ahead, the hills fold into a shallow ravine.

His next step breaks through a crust of earth. The slope gives way beneath his weight, and Calisto drops hard into the ravine as loose stones rush around him.

His armor catches on a jutting root, arresting the fall before the ravine deepens. Dust settles over his silver plates, and the original path hangs several feet above.

Calisto

Calisto

The road has become a concealed drop, and the footing above will not bear my weight.

At the ravine’s bottom, the trail ends among slabs of weathered stone. A narrow shelf winds along the cut toward the hills, while the broken slope offers no safe return.

“*i venture the path*”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled +1)

Warning Beyond the Road

Calisto steps onto the narrow shelf and advances along the ravine wall. His armor scrapes stone, and each careful footfall sends pebbles ticking into the darkness below.

The shelf narrows beneath an overhang. A slab breaks under his weight, pitching him sideways as his gauntlet catches a jagged seam in the rock.

Calisto

Calisto

The shelf will not carry me farther.

His grip holds, but the shelf collapses behind him in a grinding rush. The route back is buried beneath fallen stone, leaving no easy retreat.

Below the broken ledge, dust clears around a shallow recess. Within it, old steps descend into the ravine wall, their edges marked by the same crude warning as the milestone.

A draft rises from the stairwell, colder than the evening wind, carrying the faint clink of metal from somewhere beneath the hills.

“*i climb the steps*”

SUCCESS (Poor Agility, rolled +2)

Warning Beyond the Road

Calisto turns into the recess and begins descending the ancient steps. His silver armor grinds against the narrow wall, while cold air coils upward around his greaves.

The stone stairs sink steeply beneath the hills, their worn edges slick with dust. He lowers his weight carefully, testing each step before committing to it.

Calisto

Calisto

The warning marks continue below.

A loose stair gives way beneath his boot. Calisto catches himself against the wall, but a sharp edge tears through his glove and leaves his palm stinging.

He continues downward despite the blood beading along his hand. The clink beneath the hills grows clearer, answered by the faint scrape of chain against stone.

At last, the stair ends in a low subterranean passage. Black dust coats its floor, and old carved pillars open ahead into a chamber where dim blue light flickers.

Secure the sealed black letter

“Do the undead stand before me in this passage?”

NO, BUT (Likely, rolled 67)

The passage opens into a chamber, but no undead stand within it. The dim blue light comes from squat stone bowls, each burning with a cold flame that casts no warmth.

Dust lies undisturbed across the floor except for one narrow trail of chain marks leading beneath a cracked arch. Whatever made the clinking has already passed through.

Calisto

Calisto

There are no corpses here, but something has recently crossed the chamber.

Beyond the arch, the passage divides. The left way descends toward the continuing scrape of metal; the right ends at a bronze door furred with pale salt.

A carved crown above the bronze door has been split cleanly in two. Through the gap, a thin red glow pulses once, then fades beneath the stone.

The cold flames gutter together, revealing fresh bootprints beside the chain trail. They turn toward the bronze door, offering a second route where none was visible before.

“"i follow the crowned path"”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled -2)

Calisto follows the fresh bootprints toward the split crown above the bronze door. His greaves disturb the black dust, and the cold flames shrink behind him.

Calisto

Calisto

The tracks end at the sealed door, not beyond it.

He reaches the threshold and places one gauntleted hand against the salt-furred bronze. The red glow returns beneath the cracked crown, spreading through the seams.

The door does not open. Instead, the split crown grinds inward, and a buried mechanism shudders through the chamber like a distant tolling bell.

Stone dust pours from the ceiling. The arch behind Calisto fractures, shedding blocks across the passage and sealing the chamber’s former entrance beneath a heavy collapse.

The bronze door remains fixed, its red light fading to a dull ember. Along the left passage, the chain scrape abruptly stops, leaving that descending way as the only open route.

A thin line appears in the door’s surface, shaped like a crown turned upside down. It offers no handle, but the salt around it begins to melt.

“I use my sword to force the door open”

SUCCESS (Legendary Strength, rolled +0)

Warning Beyond the Road

Calisto draws his sword and sets its point into the melting crown-shaped seam. The bronze trembles beneath the pressure, shedding salt in pale flakes.

He drives his shoulder forward and levers the blade sideways. Ancient hinges groan, and the split crown tears open with a ringing crack.

Calisto

Calisto

The seal yields to force.

The bronze door swings inward, revealing a broad chamber washed in low red light. Dust rolls across the threshold, carrying the dry scent of old stone.

Within stands a sunken throne of black rock beneath a broken canopy. Empty chains hang from its arms, their links stirring though no wind reaches them.

Behind the throne, a narrow stair descends into deeper darkness. On the floor before it rests a single iron crown, split down the middle and stained with red light.

“*takes the crown*”

Warning Beyond the Road

Calisto steps before the sunken throne and reaches down through the red-lit dust. His gauntlet closes around the split iron crown.

The crown is colder than the surrounding stone, its two halves meeting without joining. Red light pulses faintly along the broken edge.

Calisto

Calisto

The crown is an artifact, but it is not mine to claim.

The empty chains hanging from the throne fall still. No voice answers, and no hidden force resists as Calisto lifts the crown from the floor.

Beyond the throne, the narrow stair remains open, descending beneath the broken canopy into darkness. Dust sifts from its unseen depths.

In Calisto’s grasp, the red glow fades until only dull iron remains. The chamber settles into silence around the taken crown.

Split Iron Crown

“*i follow the path that the red light revealed*”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled +1)

Calisto leaves the split crown behind and follows the red light down the narrow stair. The glow returns faintly beneath his gauntlet, marking the way through the dark.

The steps descend beneath the throne, twisting through stone cramped enough to scrape his shoulders. Red reflections pulse along the walls, each fading as he passes.

Calisto

Calisto

The light marks a route, but it does not make the stone sound.

A stair fractures beneath Calisto’s boot. He drops one level and catches the edge, while broken stone plunges into a deep shaft below.

The staircase ahead shears away into darkness, ending the marked descent. Across the shaft, a narrow ledge curves toward a low stone doorway where red light still burns.

The crown in Calisto’s grasp gives one cold pulse. In answer, a section of the far ledge shifts outward, forming a rough bridge, though several stones remain loose.

The direct path is gone, but the displaced ledge offers a dangerous crossing to the doorway. Beneath it, the shaft swallows the last falling fragments without a sound.

✓ Quest Accepted

Reach the red-lit doorway

“*i follow the path that the red light revealed*”

FAILURE (Poor Agility, rolled -1)

Calisto steps onto the displaced ledge, following the crown’s red reflection across the shaft. The first stones hold beneath his armored weight, though dust streams into the darkness.

Halfway across, a loose block rolls from under his boot. The rough bridge twists, and several stones drop away, forcing Calisto against the shaft wall.

His gauntlet catches a jutting seam, arresting the slip. The split crown strikes the ledge and clatters toward the doorway, its red glow briefly illuminating a narrow crack in the floor.

The bridge settles crookedly, no longer forming a passage wide enough for a safe crossing. Behind him, the stones he crossed shift apart, leaving the original ledge unreachable.

The bridge cannot bear another full step.

Calisto remains clinging beside the shaft, while the crown rests beyond the broken section near the doorway. The newly revealed floor crack exhales a thin stream of cold red-lit air.
