Mint reaches the port town’s fish market as the festival riot erupts. Revelers crash into toppled stalls, brine and spilled ale mixing beneath fleeing guards’ boots.

Queen Angelina, sturdy and broad-shouldered, with weathered brown skin and a square silver brooch at her throat, a middle-aged woman with a commanding bearing, dark braided hair, and a crimson cloak torn at one shoulder, pulls Mint into a shuttered fishmonger’s booth.

There. The banner. Look at the stitching and the blood. Someone planted it to direct this madness.

A ceremonial banner lies crumpled beside overturned barrels, its gold crest smeared darkly. Outside, masked revelers shove through the market while guards retreat toward the harbor.

The crowd is sealing every exit. If that emblem belongs to the conspirators, we must know before they burn it.

A heavy blow rattles the booth’s shutters. Through a narrow gap, more figures pour into the lane, blocking the archway and the stair down to the docks.

Mint, decide quickly. Search the banner, find another way out, or prepare for whoever comes through that door.

“Can the banner’s crest identify who planted it?”

YES, AND MORE (Likely, rolled 1)

The crest is distinctive enough to identify its maker.

Mint studies the torn stitching without touching it. Beneath the smeared gold, a second threadwork emerges: a black heron clutching a broken crown, worked in the harbor guild’s forbidden pattern.

Queen Angelina

The Ashen Heron. I have seen that mark in sealed reports. It belongs to the Crownless Tide, not any common festival faction.

A loose seam gives way under the banner’s fold, revealing a waxed scrap sewn inside. A crude map marks a concealed postern beneath the old lighthouse, with the queen’s signet drawn beside it.

More than an identity. This is an invitation, or a trap meant specifically for me. Either way, it opens a route beneath the lighthouse.

The pounding at the shutters stops. In the sudden silence, footsteps scrape across the booth’s roof, while beyond the gap a guard’s horn cries once toward the harbor.

“I brace the booth door while keeping the banner within reach.”

SUCCESS (Good Strength, rolled +3)

Mint plants his small frame against the booth door, one shoulder wedged beneath its crossbar while his free hand keeps the torn banner within reach.

The door holds firm under the next shove. At the same instant, the banner’s hidden scrap slides fully free, revealing a tiny brass key stitched beneath it.

Queen Angelina

Queen Angelina

A lighthouse key. The conspirators have handed us their own lock.

Queen Angelina gathers the waxed map without disturbing the crest. Her eyes flick from the brass key to the roof, where the scraping footsteps pause above them.

Keep that door barred, Mint. I will find the postern’s markings, and then we leave through the passage they meant for me.

A thin line of dust sifts from the rafters. The hidden key bears a lighthouse sigil on one side and a fresh smear of blue sealing wax on the other.

Queen Angelina

They expected my signet, but not someone quick enough to find their key first.

“I reach out for the banned shrinking it with my amulet to make it smaller and tuck it away.”

SUCCESS (Fair Agility, rolled +1)

Mint reaches for the torn banner. The amulet warms against his chest, and a faint silver shimmer folds across the cloth without disturbing its stained crest or hidden stitching.

The ceremonial fabric contracts beneath his fingers, shrinking from a broad standard to a palm-sized square. The black heron and broken crown remain sharply visible.

Mint tucks the reduced banner safely into his clothing, leaving the brass lighthouse key and waxed map in Queen Angelina’s keeping.

Queen Angelina

Queen Angelina

Good. No conspirator outside will find their invitation in our wake.

Above them, a boot shifts across the roof tiles. Dust trickles through the rafters, but the booth door remains braced beneath Mint’s shoulder.

The postern markings are clear. When I lift this bar, we move low and fast toward the lighthouse stairs.

She folds the map beneath her crimson cloak and closes her hand around the key. Beyond the shutters, the riot swells toward the harbor.
