The Bot Awakens

Tar finishes prying the small access panel free, and the hidden maintenance bay feels even tighter for it. The woman slides the ship’s little door open by hand, letting in a cooler strip of corridor light. They step inside together, shoulder to shoulder, the air thin with ozone and old recycled heat.

Tar crouches by the fried repair socket and reroutes the damaged contacts. A tiny sphere on the deck twitches, then rolls itself upright in a sluggish wobble. Its lens blinks once, twice, then settles into a dim amber pulse.

The blue-skinned woman lets out a sharp breath, half laugh, half relief. She leans forward as if she might reach for the bot, then stops herself, watching Tar instead with open amazement.

The bot gives a weak settling hum and dims a little more, now stable enough to wait. Tar has a clear first look at the ship’s guts, and for the moment, nothing is rushing them.
