The buried chamber exhales its last tremor. Living roots cradle the root-heart in a nest of amber light, and the stone walls fill with silent fragments of the village’s final night.

A child’s empty cup appears in the memory, then a shutter swinging open beneath a starless sky. The images fade before the faces can be seen.

The god did not abandon them in a single moment. Someone taught the village to mistake silence for judgment.

The Cloaked Wizard lowers their hand from the broken-crown sigil. For once, they do not reach for another spell.

You severed the chains without striking the heart. That was more than skill. Why did you spare it?

The root-heart gives a quiet pulse. Warm light settles over Tree strider’s antlers, vines, and scarred eye, while the memory waits in the stone without pressing closer.

Why do you know so much of this abandoned rite?

The question enters the chamber softly. The amber light gathers around the broken-crown mark, and the waiting memory sharpens.

Because I helped write its first working. I was the shrine's youngest keeper, before the Crownless Prior turned the rite against the village.

The god's silence was not abandonment. The rite taught the villagers to close their prayers, then named that silence judgment. I fled when I understood, and left the Prior the knowledge he needed.

The stone remembers more clearly now. A younger figure in the wizard's unmistakable mantle places the first seal beneath the altar, then tears it away as the Prior reaches for the root-heart.

I withheld that truth because shame made a better prison than any chain. You broke the rite without destroying what it protected. The memory will show you the altar's hidden inscription, if you wish to read it.

Beyond the opened rootway, the distant bell sounds once. The memory settles into a clear image, offering the inscription without forcing it upon you.
