Trapped in the Lower Passage

The Village Witch darts to the newly opened fissure and plants her lantern in the stone, light quivering over the tight passage. A rumble rolls through the mine behind her, and grit rains from the ceiling as the way back caves shut.

Pip Bramblefoot lands in the lower passage with a scrape of boots and a jingle of stolen gold. The tunnel is small, stale, and close enough to feel like a fist around his ribs.

The Village Witch

There you are. I knew you'd take the clever way.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

That gold in your pockets, halfling, it is not yours to keep. Not if you know what it is.

She does not lunge. She only smiles, strained and hungry, one hand lifted as if calming a skittish animal while the other keeps the lantern high between them.

The passage ahead forks into two crawlspaces.

Behind Pip, stone groans against stone. Ahead, the dark bends left and right, each opening just wide enough for a quick thief, or a desperate one.

✓ Quest Accepted

Turn the tables on the Village Witch

I dive into the right crawlspace, hoping to circle back and ambush her.

SUCCESS (Great Athletics, rolled +1)

Trapped in the Lower Passage

Pip kicks sideways and slips into the right crawlspace before the witch can close the gap. Stone scrapes his shoulders, but the passage takes him, bending low and silent into the dark.

A thin draft brushes his cheek. Ahead, the crawlspace loops around the chamber wall, and he catches the witch’s lantern glow through a crack to his left.

The crawlspace wraps back behind her.

Pip slides to a stop in a cramped pocket of rock and peeks through the stone break. The Village Witch still faces the first opening, her smile tightening as she listens for him in the wrong direction.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Come out. I can still make this easy.

Instead of answering, Pip shifts deeper, out of sight, now behind the witch’s lantern line and above the chamber floor.

The pale object from the side alcove lies half-buried in dust near his new vantage, while the witch’s light flickers on the stone below. She has not noticed him yet.

I strike from the hidden crawlspace

SUCCESS (Great Melee Combat, rolled +0)

Trapped in the Lower Passage

Pip lunges out of the crawlspace and strikes low from the blind side. His blade catches the witch before she can turn, and her lantern jerks wild, spilling gold light across the stone.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Ah. There you are.

She staggers, one hand flying to the wound, the other snapping up to keep her balance. The chamber flashes bright, then dim, as the lantern swings hard against the wall.

Pip Bramblefoot

Pip Bramblefoot

She is off balance.

Pip lands back in the pocket above her, dagger ready, with the witch forced to twist and look upward instead of toward the tunnel. For the first time, the narrow stone favors him.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Careful, little thief. That gold is not yours to keep.

Below them, the pale object in the dust catches a shard of lantern light, clean and strange against the grit. The witch shifts her footing, her free hand reaching, not for Pip, but for the hidden space behind her.

✓ Quest Accepted

Force the Village Witch to bargain

Leap down and pin her hand before she reaches the hidden space.

SUCCESS (Great Athletics, rolled +1)

Trapped in the Lower Passage

Pip drops from the ledge in a tight blur and catches the witch's reaching wrist before it can disappear into the hidden space. Her fingers slap stone instead of finding purchase.

The impact drives her shoulder sideways. Lantern light skates across the floor, and the pale object in the dust flashes once, untouched.

Pip plants a knee on her forearm and pins the hand flat. The witch's other arm jerks up, but the angle is wrong, all sting and no room.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Still reaching, little thief? You have no idea what you are holding.

Pip Bramblefoot

Her hand is trapped.

The chamber goes very still except for the lantern's trembling circle of light. Dust swirls between them, and the fork ahead waits in the gloom.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Listen carefully. Put the gold down, and I may yet tell you why that thing in the dust matters.

I demand she name the pale object

Name it. What is that pale thing?

The witch’s eyes flick once to the dust, then back to Pip’s blade. Her breathing tightens, but her pinned hand goes still under his weight.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

A bone charm. Not carved for mercy, either. It is a key, if you know which lock was made to answer it.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

If he truly does not know, then the gold may still be in play.

She swallows, then shifts her lantern just enough to paint the pale object in clean light. It is not bone at all, but something smoother, old and white as river stone.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

That is why I need the gold. The object wakes what lies below, and what lies below does not bargain twice.

Her gaze returns to Pip’s face, sharp despite the pain, and her free hand opens slowly in the air between them, patient as a dealer at a table.

I press her for what lies below

SUCCESS (Great Persuasion, rolled +1)

Pip Bramblefoot

Then tell me what sleeps below, and why you want this gold so badly.

Pip eases the pressure just enough to make the question worth answering, not enough to trust her. The witch watches his face, then the dagger, and her mouth twists with reluctant respect.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Below this passage lies an old seal, older than the mine, older than the village that now squats above it. The gold is not treasure to me. It is a weight, a lure, a price.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

If he is clever, he will hear the warning hidden in the offer.

Her free hand drifts toward the pale charm, not touching it, as if even that small motion might wake something in the stone. Lanternlight trembles over the rough walls and the trapped dust between them.

The Village Witch

The Village Witch

Give me the gold, and I tell you how to pass the seal. Keep it, and you may learn what kind of hunger made me take it in the first place.

For a breath, her stare stays level with Pip's, the bargain hanging there like a drawn blade, waiting for his answer.

Is the seal beneath us dangerous now?

NO (VeryLikely, rolled 93)

Pip studies the seal, but the stone remains cold and silent beneath his boots. The ancient barrier shows no sign of waking, and the air in the chamber stays stagnant and still.
