The abandoned copper mine yawns black beneath a split moon. Rusted rails vanish into the darkness, and wet stone gleams where old sluice water still drips.
Pip Bramblefoot lies tucked behind a broken ore cart, small as a shadow, watching two figures by a torch guttering against the wall.
The village witch stands in a hood of dark wool, one hand resting on a heavy pouch. Across from her, the bandit leader waits with a carved club in his grip and a greedy stare.

The Village Witch
There. The saboteur hides near the rails. Finish it quickly.

The Bandit Leader
At last. Thought the little rat had fled the mine.
The witch’s arm lifts, and her finger points straight into Pip’s hiding place.

Pip Bramblefoot
They mean me.
Boots scrape on gravel. Two bandits peel away from the torchlight and start toward the cart as the witch’s pouch gives a dull clink in her palm.

“I scramble over the cart and sprint deeper into the dark tunnel.”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +2)

Pip plants a boot on the cart’s rim and vaults over the broken timber. Gravel skitters under him as he lands in the rail cut and drives into the dark tunnel.
Behind him, the witch’s torchlight shrinks to a hard orange coin. The two bandits lunge after him, but the narrow passage steals their stride.

The Village Witch
After him. Do not let him out of the mine.

The Bandit Leader
Run, rat. The tunnels still end somewhere.
Pip cuts past a dripstone bend and catches a glimpse of a side alcove ahead, half-hidden by collapsed beams. Something pale gleams on the floor there.
The torch behind him wavers as footsteps pound closer, then split, one set staying on the main track, the other scraping toward the alcove.
Cold blackness opens in front of Pip, with the side passage and the glinting shape waiting in it.
“I duck into the side alcove”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled +0)

Pip slips into the alcove and folds behind the collapsed beams, vanishing into the soot-dark shadow. The pale shape on the floor is a broken skull, its hollow eye sockets catching the little light that leaks in.
A bandit rushes past the opening, boots crunching stone, while the other skids to a stop just outside the alcove and stares in. He sees only rubble, dust, and a dead end.

Two Bandits
He went this way!

The Bandit Leader
Then find him. Tear the side passage apart if you must.
The witch does not waste breath on the search. She shifts the pouch of gold in her hand, and the metal clinks softly, too clear in the dark mine.

The Village Witch
Leave the saboteur. The gold is coming with me.
From his hiding place, Pip catches the shape of the sack at her hip and the faint green sheen of spelllight on her fingers. The bandits hesitate, then turn back toward her order.
For the moment, the alcove holds him unseen, but the search is tightening again, and the witch is moving the gold deeper into the mine.
“I shadow the witch deeper into the mine”
SUCCESS (Superb Stealth, rolled -2)

Pip slips from the alcove and melts into the tunnel behind the witch, every step timed to the scrape of boots and the clink of her gold pouch.
Ahead, she stops at a soot-marked wall and presses the pouch close, the green sheen in her fingers brightening the rough stone.
The wall loosens with a grinding sigh, swinging inward to reveal a narrow chamber veined with copper ore and stacked with stolen coins.

The Village Witch
Keep watch. The rest of the hoard goes below.
Pip catches the truth at a glance, she is moving the gold into a hidden cache deeper in the mine, and one loose pebble betrays him with a dry click under his heel.

The Bandit Leader
There, by the wall. I heard that.
The witch’s head turns, the chamber door stays open, and the bandits start closing in on the noise.

“I slip into the hidden chamber”
SUCCESS (Legendary Stealth, rolled +0)

Pip slips through the open wall and the hidden chamber swallows him in copper dusk. The door yawns behind him, spilling tunnel light across stacked coin and rough ore.
The Village Witch jerks around at the draft, one hand flaring green over the doorway, but Pip is already inside the cache, low and silent among the shadows.

The Bandit Leader
Shut that door! He’s in there!
The two bandits crowd the threshold, weapons up, while the witch keeps the passage half-open with a tense shoulder. Their boots scrape stone, but none of them step in yet.

Pip Bramblefoot
The chamber’s deeper than it looked.
Pip has the hidden chamber at his back now, with the open mine mouth still beyond his pursuers and the witch blocking the way between them.

The Village Witch
Come out, thief. There’s no tunnel left for you.
“Is there another exit in this chamber?”
YES (Even, rolled 12)

Pip Bramblefoot
A draft... there is a breeze coming from behind those crates.
Pip catches the faint, rhythmic flutter of air against his cheek, tracing it to a narrow fissure hidden behind a stack of rotting timber at the back of the vault.
“I'm going to fill up my pouch with the gold or anything else that will fit in my pockets worth value. I can't help myself. Then I'm gonna find the way out.”
SUCCESS (Superb Thievery, rolled +2)

Pip slips from the timber stack and works fast, scooping gold into his pouch until it bulges, then stuffing the heavier bits into every pocket he can reach. The secret chamber goes from hoard to haul in a few greedy breaths.
He turns from the glitter and follows the draft, pushing past the stacked wood to the narrow fissure in the rear wall. The gap is tight, but it opens into blackness beyond the mine.

The Village Witch
There, he is at the back wall! Do not let him slip through!
The witch’s voice cracks through the chamber, and the bandits surge deeper inside, boots grinding on stone. Their attention fixes on the fissure just as Pip gets his shoulder into it.

Pip Bramblefoot
The gap is real. Narrow, but real.
Pip shoves through the opening, gold clinking soft against his ribs, and leaves the hoard chamber behind him. Cold air brushes his face from the passage ahead.

The Bandit Leader
After him, through the crack! He is escaping!

“I'll continue down the crack”
SUCCESS (Great Agility, rolled +1)

Pip wriggles hard, and the crack gives way at last. Stone scrapes his shoulders, then the mine falls behind him in a choking whisper of dust.
He spills into a low natural passage beyond the wall, knees skidding over damp rock, gold clattering faintly in his pockets.
Behind him, the hidden opening stays too narrow for the bandits to follow at once. Their boots slam and skid on the chamber side, cut off by the stone.
Cold air pours through the passage, carrying the sharp scent of night and wet earth. The mine’s heat and torch-smoke fade into the dark behind him.
Above and behind, the witch’s voice snaps into the rock, but the passage bends away, swallowing it to a distant murmur.
Pip slides to a stop at a forked crawlspace, one branch slanting up toward a faint grey draft, the other dropping into black.
The mine is no longer holding him. Which way he crawls next is another matter.
