Hyperspace snaps shut around the bridge in a white-blue wash, but the relief lasts half a breath. The Stranger’s slate keeps pinging, steady and cold, and the console lights begin to chase each other toward a new route.

Kaiju’s correction catches on the navigation display. The forced course is already laid in, a hidden corridor bending away from Relay Nine, as if the ship has been waiting to be guided to this exact point.

The Stranger turns the slate so the screen faces Kaiju. Buried beneath the masking code is a live beacon handshake, tied to the artifact’s pulse and mirrored into the ship’s position. Every clean jump, every delay, every detour has been feeding someone a trail.

The Stranger does not reach for a weapon. They only watch the locked course deepen across the map, calm as the ship drifts under someone else’s instructions.

Kaiju seizes the Stranger by the collar and hauls them off balance, the slate jerking between them as the bridge lights stutter over the locked route.

The Stranger stays oddly calm in Kaiju’s grip, one hand still pinning the slate while the other thumbs at a hidden control on the relay puck clipped to their belt.

A thin status ribbon blooms across the navigation display, showing an external lock tightening around the ship’s course. The Stranger’s calm slips into a focused frown as their thumb hesitates over the control.

Kaiju rips the relay puck free. The belt snaps loose with a sharp crack, and the Stranger stumbles sideways as the bridge display flickers on its own.

The status ribbon shudders, then the forced route begins to wobble. A burst of static spits across the nav console, and the external lock weakens for the first time.

A hot jolt crawls through Kaiju’s hand from the torn connector, and a thin burn marks his palm as the puck spits sparks in his grip.

The Stranger’s expression stays disturbingly composed, even with their shoulder twisted free. Their gaze locks on the puck, then lifts to the console as the ship’s course starts to drift.

Kaiju shoves the damaged connector into the console seam and tries to scorch the contact points dead. The panel answers with a harsh flare, but the wrong circuit takes the hit first.

A strip of status lights goes dark, then another line of the nav display reboots in red. The forced route does not vanish, it fragments, splitting into jagged fallback paths.

The Stranger keeps their balance, one hand lifting slightly as if to steady the relay puck they no longer hold. Their calm never breaks, even as the console starts feeding the ship a new set of coordinates.

Kaiju’s burned palm slips on the housing. The console cover buckles, exposing a second, hotter junction behind the first, now pulsing under a fresh warning tone.

Kaiju drives the severed line deeper, and the console bites back with a blinding surge. The hidden junction does not die, it opens like a trapdoor and dumps a full navigation map onto the bridge display.

The Stranger finally moves, not panicked, just precise, reaching for the warped console edge while their calm gaze stays on the glowing map. The relay puck in their other hand catches the warning light for one sharp second.

The reroute freezes halfway through its climb, then hardens into a visible path leading off the bridge systems and into a locked maintenance access buried beneath the deck. The ship is still theirs for the moment, but only if someone reaches that access fast.

Kaiju breaks from the console and heads for the maintenance hatch marked on the frozen route map. The bridge lights flicker over his boots as the deck hum changes under him.

He reaches the hatch in time to see the floor panel already outlined by emergency strips, the access seam lit in red.

The Stranger turns with that same controlled calm, the relay puck still in hand, and their eyes track Kaiju's movement instead of the console.

Kaiju drops to one knee at the hatch, fingers finding the release as the warning pulse under the deck throbs through the metal.

The Stranger looks at Kaiju, then at the relay puck in their hand. Their calm does not break, but their thumb shifts to a recessed switch on the puck casing.

They snap the switch. A sharp chirp dies in the console, and the bridge display loses its external lock indicators all at once.

The relay puck goes dark in their palm, and a thin line of smoke curls from Kaiju's scorched glove where the hatch lever kickback tore the fabric.
