Prosperity of the Eclipse Palace

Cold shadows peel off the training hall wall and gather into a human shape. The air tightens. Kaungshen stands over the hidden request sheet and the eastern cargo diversion note, while Rina, Charlotte, and Sam shift into alert positions around him.

The Watcher steps fully into the light, face pale and unreadable, imperial censor's seal hanging at their waist. Their gaze never leaves the documents in Kaungshen's hand, but they do not reach for a weapon.

Sam edges half a step forward, empty hands open but ready. Charlotte stays composed, eyes flicking between the Watcher and the bench. The hall feels balanced on a blade edge, one wrong word from turning the meeting into an arrest.

Kaungshen drives his ki down through the boards. The floor answers with a hard, packed thud, a low ridge of pressure rising between him and the Watcher like a timber wall.

At the same time, his free hand flicks the papers under his sleeve line. The forged stack vanishes from view, replaced in a single smooth motion by the decoy packet.

The Watcher’s eyes snap to the movement, just long enough for the switch to land. A corner of the counterfeit slips against Kaungshen’s wrist, and he feels the sting of a fresh paper cut.

Rina shifts closer to Kaungshen’s flank, her stance tightening. Charlotte lowers her chin, already reading the Watcher’s next move. Sam plants her feet, ready to spring if the censor lunges.

Kaungshen lifts the decoy packet with two fingers, calm as a clerk closing a ledger, and extends it over the earth ridge. His voice threads through the hall with clean, measured force, carrying the shape of surrender better than any bow.

The Watcher accepts the packet without stepping past the ridge. Their gaze lingers on Kaungshen’s wrist, where the paper cut has already reddened the skin. The seal at their waist tilts as they weigh the handoff, then they draw the packet close enough to read the top sheet.

Rina eases one shoulder forward, still guarding Kaungshen’s side, while Charlotte’s eyes flick once to the packet and back to the Watcher’s hands. Sam keeps her stance rooted, but her breathing softens when the censor does not advance.

The hall stays still, but the Earth ridge sheds a few grains of dust under the Watcher’s fingers as they compare the decoy to the seal pattern. Kaungshen’s ki voice holds steady, and the lie settles over the paper like a fresh stamp. The cost lands in the sting at his wrist, a thin line of blood beading beneath his glove.

Kaungshen turns his chin toward the main gate, then flicks two fingers as if indicating a clerk’s route on a ledger. The motion is small, but it lands like a deadline. His posture says the evidence is already gone from the hall, and the censor is arriving late.

The Watcher’s eyes lift from the page edges to the gate, then back to Kaungshen’s blood-marked wrist. The decoy packet stays in their hands, but their shoulders lose a fraction of their height.

Rina shifts one step wider, cutting the line between Kaungshen and the door. Charlotte’s gaze follows the Watcher’s grip, not their face. Sam’s stance softens just enough to show she is listening for footsteps beyond the hall.

They lower the packet, turn it flat under the light, and thumb the top sheet apart from the rest. The seal at their waist tilts toward the gate, as if the hall itself has become a corridor they must leave before it fills.

Kaungshen lets the silence breathe just long enough to feel deliberate. He keeps his wrist low, the thin blood mark hidden by the angle, while the Watcher’s attention stays fixed on the pages instead of the hall.

Charlotte’s eyes flick once to the top sheet, then back to the Watcher’s hands. Rina holds her line without speaking, and Sam’s expression eases as the room stays quiet.

Before the Watcher can lift the next page, heavy steps cross the threshold from the hall outside. Master Khan’s presence fills the doorway, and the Watcher freezes with the packet half-open in their hands.

Kaungshen dips the decoy packet forward with one hand, already turning his body toward the exit. The Watcher takes it by reflex, attention split for a single breath between the pages and the man stepping past them.

He slides by the Watcher’s shoulder, Earth ki settling low through the floorboards. The ridge underfoot gives a muted shiver, just enough to steal their balance without a visible strike.

Darkness ki folds around the motion a heartbeat later, heavy and quiet. The Watcher’s legs buckle at the joints, and they drop hard to one knee, packet clutched tight, breath knocked thin.

Rina steps in front of Kaungshen’s line of retreat, while Charlotte and Sam widen the opening behind him. Khan’s shadow fills the doorway, but he does not lunge, only watches the collapse with stern stillness.

Kaungshen is already past them, the real evidence kept close as the hall opens toward the corridor. The Watcher stays grounded and off-balance, too stunned to rise before the next step is decided.
