The Knight's Final Stand

The Aging Knight stumbles through the dense underbrush, his breath coming in ragged gasps. He presses a hand against his side, where blood darkens his worn tunic, and forces his gaze backward toward the flickering torches of the shrine.

They are closing the distance too quickly. I must buy the girl more time.

Aging Knight

Kendra. Do not stop. Keep to the shadows and head for the ridge.

He spots Kendra crouched low in the thicket, her bow held ready. He waves her away with his free hand, his eyes wide with urgency.

They track the blood trail, not the sight. Go now, or all we discovered will fall to Commander Hrodgar.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Weapons, rolled +3)

Kendra moves with fluid grace, abandoning the ferns to scale the ancient oak. She finds a sturdy branch, pulling her lean frame into the thick canopy where she melts into the shadows.

Below, the forest floor groans under the weight of metal-shod boots. Hrodgar and his soldiers halt near the trail of blood, their armor clanking in the twilight.

He bleeds out like a stuck boar. Search the brush, he cannot have traveled far.

Commander Hrodgar

Commander Hrodgar

The relic is near. I can smell the old magic clinging to the air.

From her perch, Kendra draws her longbow. The gap in the commander's visor is a sliver of darkness, perfect for a clean shot.

The arrow whispers through the air, finding its mark with surgical precision. Hrodgar collapses without a sound, the rest of the guard freezing in sudden, paralyzing confusion.

The wind holds steady, no tremor in my grip.

Two more shafts fly in rapid succession, whistling through the gloom with rhythmic lethality. The soldiers collapse before they can even draw their steel.

Silence returns to the Blackwood, heavier than before. Kendra scans the undergrowth, catching the glint of a leather satchel slipping from a fallen guard's belt.

Soldier

The air... it feels thick. Like we are being watched by the trees themselves.

A low hum emanates from the fallen commander's armor, a rhythmic pulsing of light that defies the dimming day. The magic he spoke of is not in the scroll case alone.

A twig snaps sharply nearby. Kendra turns her gaze toward the dense thicket where a pair of mud-caked boots emerges from the foliage, stepping over the corpses without hesitation.

The magic on the armor is too bright to be mundane steel.

Kendra pulls her weight back, pressing her frame deep into the canopy of the oak as the stranger walks into the clearing.

The forest is dying for these secrets. You would do well to surrender them before you follow them into the dirt.

She is close. I can smell the pine and the sweat of a practiced archer.

The figure stops directly over the glowing armor, their hand resting on the hilt of a blackened iron blade.

SUCCESS (Poor Stealth, rolled +2)

Kendra twists in the branches and slips the scroll case into a hollow knot of oak bark. Dead leaves and dark moss swallow its shape at once.

She presses a loose wedge of bark back into place, then drags a hanging vine across it to break the outline.

Below, the blue glow on the armored corpse throbs against the roots, washing the clearing in cold pulses.

Mysterious Figure

You think a tree will hide you from me?

The stranger steps around the body and raises the blackened blade a hand’s breadth, listening for movement above.

SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Weapons, rolled -1)

Kendra lets the branch take her weight, then draws and releases in one clean motion.

The arrow drops out of the leaves and strikes the stranger at the head. Their blade slips from slack fingers and thuds into the moss.

For a breath, the clearing goes still except for the blue pulse under the dead commander’s armor.

Mysterious Figure

Mysterious Figure

...No.

The figure pitches sideways, catching a knee in the roots, then collapses face-first beside the body they came to claim.

Below, the blackened blade lies within reach of the corpse, and the glowing armor keeps flashing cold light over the trunks.

A twig snaps somewhere deeper in the Blackwood, and the forest answers with a low stir from the undergrowth.

Kendra keeps her bow half-drawn in the branches, listening instead of moving. The clearing holds its breath.

Boots scrape through fern and leaf litter beyond the fallen trunks, slow and uncertain. Then a second set answers from the opposite side.

Mysterious Figure

Mysterious Figure

...There was another.

The blue glow under the commander’s armor flares once, brighter than before, throwing hard light across the moss and the dead hands around it.

Mysterious Figure

Mysterious Figure

Show yourself, archer. I know you are there.

One of the newcomers stops at the edge of the clearing. A gloved hand rises, not to draw steel, but to point straight at Kendra’s tree.

From the roots below her, something shifts in the bark where she hid the scroll case.

Shoot the other stranger in the head

SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Weapons, rolled +1)

Kendra loosens one arrow without a sound. It drops through the leaves and vanishes into the clearing below.

The newcomer jerks as the shaft takes him high in the head. His pointing arm snaps loose, and he falls hard among the roots.

A strip of leather flies free from his belt as he hits. At his side, a sealed horn rolls into the moss and stops beside the wounded bark.

Below the branches, the glow under the commander’s armor flickers once, then steadies to a cold pulse.

The Mysterious Figure drags in a breath and turns his head toward the fallen newcomer, stunned by the clean shot.

Mysterious Figure

There she is. In the oak!

Moss peels back around the hollow where Kendra hid the scroll case, as if something inside the tree has been disturbed.

From the oak hollow, bark flakes away in a small spill, revealing the edge of the hidden scroll case.

The second tracker freezes in the brush, half turned toward the fallen pair, half toward the tree line.

Kendra looses again. The arrow snaps through the brush and takes the second tracker in the head, dropping him where he stands.

His shout cuts off at once. The clearing goes suddenly still except for the low, cold throb from the commander’s armor.

The second tracker’s hand slips from the branch he seized, and his body folds into the ferns below.

Mysterious Figure

Mysterious Figure

Bark peels wider at the oak hollow, and the scroll case shows more of its metal edge in the split wood.

The last tracker staggers back a step, staring up into the canopy and then down at his fallen companion.

Now, archer, do you run, or do you finish this?

SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Weapons, rolled +3)

Kendra shifts her aim lower in the branch shadow and lets another shaft fly. It hisses through leaves and finds the remaining tracker’s temple.

He drops without a cry, vanishing into the ferns beside his fellow fallen scout.

The clearing breaks open into silence again. The blue pulse under Hrodgar’s armor throws cold light across the bodies and wet grass.

At the oak hollow, the split bark gives way with a dry crack.

The metal scroll case slides free, catches on a root, then drops into view against the trunk.

From the grass below, the wounded knight drags himself up on one elbow and looks toward the tree, breath ragged. 'Kendra... the case is loose. Take it, now.'

She hooks an arm beneath his shoulder and hauls him clear of the roots, turning him toward the darker trees.

Good. Keep it close. Do not let that light guide them to us.

The clearing opens around Kendra in a ragged bowl of fern and trampled grass. Rain-dark roots knot the earth, and the trees press close on every side.

Ahead, the blue pulse under Hrodgar's armor flashes again, throwing cold light across the corpses and the broken ferns.

The wounded knight braces himself beside her, head lifting at the sound from the edge of the wood.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

There. Keep moving, Kendra. Do not let it see you stand still.

From the fern line, something shifts low and hidden, making the grass shiver in a slow arc.

The clearing holds its breath, lit only by that cold blue throb and the gap of darkness where the unseen watcher waits.

Kendra stills, letting the clearing speak first. Her eyes trace the fern line, the corpse-strewn ground, and the blue pulse trapped beneath Hrodgar’s armor.

Kendra

Kendra

The gap beside the yew roots is open.

A narrow deer path slips out behind the broken bodies and vanishes into the darker trunks beyond the hollow. It is the only route that does not cross the blue glow.

Near the armor, the light brightens, then thins, as if something inside it is turning toward the path Kendra has found.

The Aging Knight drags himself one step after her, then stops hard, staring at the fern line.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Take the deer path. It bends east, then climbs. Move before whatever wakes up finds your trail.

Kendra has her answer. The path is clear, hidden, and fast enough to use. But from the ferns, something unseen pushes the grass flat in a slow, deliberate line.

Kendra leaves the clearing behind and arrives at the ridge.

Kendra helps the Aging Knight onto a flat rock and takes some of his weight, keeping the scroll case close as she steadies him against the gusts.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

He made it this far... good. From here, the path can hide us.

The fern line below shudders again, then goes still. A thin rustle climbs through the brush, too measured to be wind.

Kendra

The ridge is higher than the trees. The path bends out of sight east.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Do not linger. If you can still move, take the eastern bend and keep the stones between you and the forest.

Kendra gets the knight moving with her, and the two of them break onto the deer path. The black trunks fall behind as the ridge swallows their tracks, but from the brush below, something unseen begins to climb after them.

Kendra reaches the bend first, the scroll case secured against her side. The Aging Knight follows a step behind, limping hard but still upright.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Good. The slope hides us here.

A scrape sounds from below the ridge, then another. Something is climbing the rocks with slow, patient intent.

Kendra

Kendra angles toward the hollow, guiding the knight past a slab of stone and into the bend's shadow. The forest vanishes behind the rise.

The first thorny branches of the hollow brush Kendra's sleeve as the unseen pursuer reaches the rocks above.

Kendra leaves the eastern bend behind and arrives at the hollow.

Aging Knight

The hollow opens around Kendra in a hushed bowl of roots, stone, and thorn. The air is colder here, damp with moss and old leaf rot, and the trees lean close enough to seem to listen.

She slips deeper into cover, the scroll case firm in her grip, while the aging knight lingers at the edge of the brush behind her.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Stay low. If it follows the ridge, this is where it must choose a path.

A scrape carries through the stones above them, then a second, heavier sound. Dust trickles from the lip of the hollow.

Kendra spots a narrow cleft between two roots, dark enough to hide a body and close enough to reach in a stride.

Kendra

Kendra

The cleft is deeper than it looks.

The knight glances up, then back to Kendra, his hand half-raised as if to warn her or send her onward.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Choose quickly, Kendra. Hide, or move before it drops into the hollow.

Hide and ready bow

SUCCESS (Poor Stealth, rolled -1)

Kendra slides into the root cleft and tucks the scroll case against the stone. The hollow mouth vanishes behind woven roots as she draws her bow in the dark.

Kendra

Kendra

The roots fit over her like a lid.

Beside her, the aging knight lowers his hand and shifts one careful step back, giving her room while keeping his eyes on the ridge above.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Good. Stay there. I will draw its eye if it comes into the hollow.

Dust falls in a thin stream through the cleft, and a shadow moves across the opening overhead.

Something lands on the rim of the hollow with a hard scrape, unseen but close enough to stir the leaves at the entrance.

Outside, gravel ticks down the slope, then stops.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Hold fast, Kendra. Let me see it first.

A heavy shape shifts at the rim, and a hand, armored or wrapped in dark cloth, braces against the roots.

The hollow goes tense with the sound of one slow step dropping toward the cleft.

Now. Loose on my mark.

The knight shifts his weight at the entrance, one hand lifting in a sharp, deliberate signal.

A boot edge and a shadowed knee slide into view at the rim, the intruder testing the opening with slow, careful pressure.

Kendra waits for the exact beat of the signal, her arrow held dead steady in the dark.

Then the hand above the hollow tightens, and a second figure leans over it from behind, crowding the opening.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Kendra, fire now, before they get both hands on the roots.

Shoot both in the head

SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Weapons, rolled +0)

Kendra looses twice in the same breath, and both arrows vanish into the dark opening above.

One strike hammers the first intruder back from the rim. The second catches the shadow behind it, and both bodies jerk out of view.

Aging Knight

Aging Knight

Hold. I have them.

The knight lunges upward into the gap, steel flashing in the cramped dark as something heavy scrapes against stone outside.

A wet cough of breath cuts off above them, then a body slumps and slides, dragging loose dirt and roots into the hollow.

Kendra

For one beat, the opening clears, then a fresh shadow leans over the rim, peering down toward Kendra's arrow shaft.

Above, the newcomer leans farther over the hole, and a gloved hand reaches down as if to probe the cleft or seize the bowstring.

Kendra looses twice in one breath. The first arrow punches through the broad shadow at the rim, and the second takes the hand that hangs over the opening. Both shapes jerk backward out of sight, and a wet thud answers from above.

Loose dirt rains down hard into the hollow. The gloved hand vanishes, and the opening clears for a heartbeat, except for one boot scraping for purchase at the lip.

Then a fresh scrape answers from deeper in the rim, lower and more certain than before, as if someone else is crawling to a new angle.
