The canopy of the Blackwood muffles the evening birds. Kendra crests a ridge, her boots finding purchase on slick moss and loose stone.
Below, in a hollow ringed by dense ferns, the smoke of a small campfire curls upward. An Aging Knight stands by a tree stump, his armor tarnished and rusted at the joints.

Kendra
The camp is too exposed for a group of outlaws.

Aging Knight
I know you are there, girl. The wind carries the scent of your travel.

Aging Knight
If you have come for the relic, you are far too late, or perhaps, just in time to be an inconvenience.

Aging Knight
Tell me, do you value your life more than your meddlesome curiosity?

“It's not curiosity”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +0)

Kendra
The steel on his hip is pitted but the edge still looks lethal.

Kendra
It is not curiosity that brought me here. I have a duty to secure that relic before it causes more ruin.

Aging Knight
She stands her ground with the confidence of a fool, or a champion.

Aging Knight
Duty is a heavy cloak for such young shoulders. If you wish to claim it, come down from your perch and earn the right.
The knight kicks a log into the fire, sending a shower of sparks drifting into the evening air.
He draws his blade, the metal groaning as it leaves the sheath, and gestures toward the chest on the stump.
“Stay where I'm at and pull out bow”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled -1)

Kendra moves with a fluid grace, pivoting away from the knight's line of sight before he can close the gap.

Kendra
The damp leaves are soft beneath my boots, muffling my retreat into the shadows of the ancient oaks.
Her fingers dance over the bowstring, pulling an arrow from the quiver with practiced ease as she draws the weapon in one smooth motion.

Aging Knight
Cowardice is a poor shield, girl. If you mean to strike, do it openly.
The arrow rests steady, nocked against the wood, and Kendra notices a faint, pulsating blue glow bleeding through the cracks in the rusted chest lid.

Aging Knight
She has found the opening. I must force her to commit before the relic awakens fully.
“Aim for the opening in his armor and fire”
SUCCESS (Mediocre Ranged Weapons, rolled +2)
Kendra releases the breath she held, her fingers uncurling with precise intent. The arrow flies true, whistling through the thick air of the hollow.
The projectile finds its mark, finding the narrow gap between the greaves and the cuirass at the knight's shoulder. A sharp clatter of metal meeting leather echoes as he staggers back.

Aging Knight
A lucky strike, girl. You fight with the persistence of a hound.

Kendra
The gap in his armor is wide enough now to press an advantage.

Aging Knight
But the chest demands a toll that blood alone cannot pay. Look what you have invited.
The fissures in the iron chest widen abruptly, and a blinding surge of blue light pours out, casting long, erratic shadows against the surrounding trees.

“Stick to the shadows and sneak to the chest bow still drawn”
FAILURE (Poor Stealth, rolled +2)

Kendra attempts to skirt the perimeter of the clearing, keeping the dense canopy between her and the knight. Her foot catches on an exposed root.
The snap of dry wood rings out like a gunshot in the stagnant air. The light from the chest flares, casting her silhouette starkly against a trunk.

Aging Knight
She is clumsy. Too much noise, too much hesitation.

Aging Knight
Your stealth is as thin as your resolve. Come out, or the light will consume us both.
The chest begins to vibrate violently, the blue glow turning into an intense, searing white. The ground beneath Kendra begins to crack.

Aging Knight
It is waking up. If you want the prize, you must stand in the center of the storm.
“Step into the light”
SUCCESS (Superb Agility, rolled +3)

Kendra moves with a dancer's grace, ignoring the cracking earth to lunge forward into the blinding white pillar of light.

Kendra
The air is freezing, despite the searing glow.
As she reaches the chest, the white surge hums, then settles into a soft, rhythmic pulse. The light reveals a hidden inscription etched into the inner lid of the iron box.

Aging Knight
You survived. Few could have stepped through that surge without turning to ash.
The Aging Knight stumbles toward the edge of the light, his face pale and eyes wide with shock, holding his wounded shoulder.

Aging Knight
Read the mark, girl. Tell me what it says, before the forest claims us.
“Read it out loud”
SUCCESS (Good Reasoning, rolled +2)

Kendra
The sigil speaks of a tether, bound to the blood of the woods. It says only a kin of the roots can command the seal without consequence.

Aging Knight
Blood of the woods. She is not human. That explains the speed, the silence, the way she moves like the wind through the leaves.

Aging Knight
The legends were true. You are no mere thief. If the seal accepts you, then the relic is no longer my burden to carry.
Kendra touches the cold iron, and the blue light abruptly surges upward, forming a shimmering, spectral map of the surrounding forest hollow in the air above the chest.

Kendra
The lines on the map mirror the cracks appearing in the earth around us.

Aging Knight
Child, look. The map is changing. Something is rising from beneath the hollow floor, and it does not seem pleased that we have disturbed its slumber.

“Come with me to help I will help with your wound”
SUCCESS (Great Willpower, rolled +1)

Kendra
Your wound is deep, and the forest is turning against us. Stand up, take my hand, and come with me. I have the means to tend to you.

Aging Knight
She offers aid to the one who sought to kill her. Such mercy is a rare currency in these woods.

Aging Knight
You would help me? My blade was meant for you moments ago, yet your heart remains steady. Very well. I accept your hand.
Kendra pulls the knight to his feet, her grip firm and sure. As they make contact, the shimmering map of the forest pulses in sympathy, and a small, glowing key made of solidified light drifts from the chest and settles into the knight's open palm.

Aging Knight
This light. It is not attacking us anymore. It recognizes that the seal has been claimed, and that we are working in concert.
The earth tremors once more, the ground beneath them splitting further. A hidden path, illuminated by the same soft blue glow, emerges from the shifting dirt and leads away from the dangerous center of the hollow.
